MLS Standings 2012: D.C. United Fourth In Eastern Conference Entering August

Three months are left to go in the MLS regular season and D.C. United (10-7-3, 33 points) stands in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Having lost four of their last six games, the United are now just five points up on the sixth place team in the conference and on the outside looking in on the MLS playoffs. The team lost both MLS matches in July, a 4-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo and a 1-0 loss to the Columbus Crew.

The team regained some momentum with a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain and hope that when their MLS schedule resumes that they can secure a spot in the MLS playoffs come the fall.

The team now enters a crucial August with six games on the schedule. The United start August with an opportunity to avenge that last loss to the Crew as they play Columbus on Aug. 4 at RFK Stadium. Later in August, the United will play four games in a 10-day span, a crucial stretch that will either make or break the United's season.

2012 MLS All-Star Game: D.C. United's Chris Pontius Wins MVP As MLS Completes Comeback, Wins 3-2

The 2012 MLS All-Star Game is in the books and D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario and Chris Pontius had a big impact on a 3-2 MLS win. The duo connected on an equalizer that would pull MLS even at 2-2 and result in Pontius winning the game's MVP trophy.

It was a comeback victory for the MLS All-Stars as a couple Chelsea legends scored two straight to put the Blues ahead. Chelsea took the 2-1 lead on a Frank Lampard goal in the 58th minute. The MLS All-Star defense was mixed up, unsure if goalie Dan Kennedy would make a play on a Ramires cross. The confusion and failed clear left Lampard open on the back post and the Chelsea legend put it in an open goal.

But D.C. United representatives Pontius and De Rosario came through with a huge response for the MLS All-Stars. Trailing 2-1 in the 73rd minute, David Beckham sent a beautiful long ball over the top of the Chelsea defense that De Rosario controlled in the box. De Rosario made a charge to the goal but was at a poor angle and noticed Pontius making a made dash to connect with his teammate.

Pontius went on a 45-yard sprint and De Rosario hesitated to put a perfectly timed pass back to his teammate who buried a low liner to tie it at 2-2. It was a great team goal, highlighted by the D.C. United connection to cap it off. The goal would earn Pontius the MLS All-Star Game MVP. Video of the score:

MLS would then score the winner in stoppage time as Eddie Johnson put one in the back of the net in the 91st minute for a 3-2 victory. Johnson made a late run at the Blues defense but David Luiz had him well blocked. Undeterred, Johnson fired away and a deflection off the Blues' defender shot up in the air and past the charging Chelsea goalkeeper. It was the latest game winner in All-Star Game history and a great way for the MLS All-Stars to finish their comeback against the UEFA Champions League winners.

2012 MLS All-Star Game: Chelsea's John Terry Evens It At 1-1

The MLS All-Stars have held their own against Chelsea through the first half of the MLS All-Star Game. Chris Wondolowski of the MLS broke though with the first score of the evening. The scoring dynamo from the San Jose Earthquakes has scored 51 goals over the past three years and 17 goals over the past 20 MLS games. Wondowlowski went charging to the front of the net and pounced on a cross from Thierry Henry that ricocheted off Chelsea's John Terry, who fell to the ground after the botched clear attempt. Wondolowski took advantage and put it in the corner for the 1-0 lead.

Terry would get a measure of redemption shortly thereafter, evening things up with a header off a Chelsea corner kick. Terry would push off MLS All-Star Aurelien Collin and place the header perfectly in the corner to tie it up. At the end of the first half, Thierry Henry nearly put the MLS All-Stars back in front but his chip shot went just over the top of the goal. Overall, it was a solid showing for the MLS in a relatively quiet first half.
