Two of the nation's top mid-majors meet on Saturday, when George Mason hosts Northern Iowa in Farifax.
The George Mason Patriots host the Northern Iowa Panthers on Saturday night. George Mason is coming off a 74-63 victory over UMBC, which moved the Patriots to 6-3 on the season. They are currently 4-0 at home, and sit atop the Colonial Athletic Conference. Including last season, the Patriots have won 14 home contests in a row.
Northern Iowa (5-3) won its last two games against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Northern Colorado. Before that, the Panthers lost close games to ranked opponents Stanford and Louisville. This will be UNI's first true test on the road, since the Panthers' previous road games were at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas.
So far this season, junior guard Sherrod Wright leads George Mason in scoring, averaging 16 points per game. Northern Iowa's leading scorer is Deon Mitchell (13.4 PPG), a sophomore guard from Pflugerville, Texas.
These teams last met in 2010, when George Mason defeated Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, 77-71.
