Vermont's Mike Lonergan Hired As New George Washington Basketball Head Coach

George Washington basketball has hired a local man to replace the departed Karl Hobbs as head coach. Mike Lonergan, the longtime head coach as Catholic University, will be hired as GW's new head coach, according to Chick Hernandez of CSN Washington.

Lonergan will be introduced as the coach on Monday, according to two sources close to the negotiations between Lonergan and GW.

Lonergan had been the head coach at the University of Vermont for the past six seasons. He compiled a 126-68 record in that span, winning the 2010 America East title. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Catholic University from 1992 to 2004, where he won the Division III basketball championship in 2001.

Lonergan is a local product who grew up in Bowie. He had been an assistant to outgoing Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams after being the head coach at Catholic. He replaces Hobbs, who was fired in late April after 10 seasons in Foggy Bottom.
