The second day of the 2011 Maui Invitational featured an instant classic between No. 8 Memphis and Tennessee. The heavily-favored Tigers got a great battle from the Volunteers, but eventually escaped with a 99-97 double-overtime win. Barring a miracle upset loss to Chaminade, the Georgetown Hoyas will face Memphis in the fifth-place game on Wednesday.
The Volunteers made a late rally in regulation to eventually force the game into overtime and then double overtime. Down two points, the Volunteers had a chance to tie the score, but committed a turnover with three seconds left. They got another chance when Memphis got called for a surprising traveling call with 0.9 seconds left, but Jeronne Maymon, who had such a fantastic game with 32 points and 19 rebounds, air-balled a turnaround at the buzzer.
Georgetown and Memphis will then square off on Wednesday, assuming the Hoyas can get past Chaminade. Chaminade is 6-74 all-time in the tournament. The Hoyas are also scheduled to play Memphis on December 22.
