The No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth Rams have beaten the No. 11 seed Georgetown Hoyas 74-56 this evening in an NCAA Tournament game nowhere near as close as the final score would indicate. The Rams of the Colonial Athletic Association absolutely dominated the Hoyas of the Big East in every facet of the game. The VCU win means they will face No. 3 seed Purdue Sunday in a second round match up.
As might be imagined in a game like this, multiplier Rams deserve credit for the margin of victory. Brandon Rozzell was the sharp shooter, making six of 10 threes and scoring 26 points. Senior guard Joey Rodriguez added 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Bradofrd Burgess added 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.Hollis Thompson scored 24 for the Hoyas, but it meant very little when Austin Freeman and Chris Wright (in his return) score only 10 and 6 points on six of 27 shooting combined.
VCU's win, or should I say wins, are not a fluke. This is a solid ballclub on both ends of the floor, with an up-and-coming coach calling the shots. It's just a shame the supposed college basketball experts in this country didn't know that until tonight.
