While the men's season may have ended on Sunday, the No. 5 seed women's team from Georgetown advanced to the second round of the Women's NCAA Tournament with a 61-56 win over No. 13 seed Fresno State. The Hoyas shot just 37 percent from the floor but hit five of ten three-pointers to jump out to an early double digit lead. They withstood a second-half charge by the Bulldogs and will now face the winner of Georgia Tech and Sacred Heart, which tips off this afternoon.
Tia McGee led Georgetown with 17 points on five of 11 shooting from the floor. McGee was able to consistently get to the line and hit seven of eight free-throw attempts to keep the Hoyas in front. Georgetown led by as many as 17 but nearly blew it in the second half when they did not hit a field goal in the final six minutes of the game. They had just four field goals over the final 15 plus minutes. But it was the defensive effort that got it done, as they forced 19 Fresno turnovers and held the Bulldogs to just 34 percent shooting from the floor.
