The Big East will announce the hiring of a new commissioner today: Mike Aresco, who has long worked in college sports programming as a VP for CBS, will take the head job of a league in flux.
Georgetown's fluctuating conference has a new commissioner: reports indicate that Mike Aresco, a VP at CBS, will take over the job of college sports' most unstable conference.
Aresco's hiring was first reported by Mark Blaudschun and has since been confirmed by the AP as well as CBSSports.com. Aresco has worked with CBS since 1996 and has been responsible for college programming for the network, including negotiations with the NCAA for the men's basketball tournament as well as the networks' 15-year contract with the SEC.He'll take over for interim commissioner Joe Bailey III, who has been in charge since various member schools leaving the conference cost John Marinatto his job in May. The announcement on Aresco's hiring is expected to come later Tuesday afternoon.
That know-how will come in handy as the conference looks to begin negotiations on its TV deal in September. TV deals provide major cash for NCAA conferences, and the upcoming negotiations loom large for a conference set to lose Syracuse and Pittsburgh while adding unproven programs in Houston, Memphis, UCF, and SMU at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.
