Danny O'Brien was benched in the second quarter of the game against Georgia Tech, but is Randy Edsall ready to make C.J. Brown his full-time quarterback?
over 1 year ago Update 0 comments
Maryland football's 21-16 loss to No. 13 Georgia Tech was marred by coach Randy Edsall pulling an ineffective Danny O'Brien from the game in favor of C.J. Brown. Brown had a 77-yard touchdown run and helped bring the Terps back into the game, but neither player was effective passing the ball.
Afterwards, Edsall said he would not make a final decision until he got to watch the two quarterbacks play on film. Via Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times:
Neither player passed the ball effectively. O'Brien completed just one of six passes for 17 yards and an interception, while Brown was just four of 17 for 36 yards. Brown did have that 77-yard touchdown run, though, and the Terps in general moved the ball better with Brown in the game.

The passing statistics were not pretty for Maryland Terrapin backup quarterback C.J. Brown in his first extended action in a Terps uniform, but regardless of the stats, Brown provided the Terps with a spark that benched starter Danny O'Brien could not create. The Terps fell to No. 13 Georgia Tech, 21-16, but while Brown's stats weren't great, he at least made some things happen.
Brown did his damage on the ground. An electrifying 77-yard touchdown run completely changed the scope of the Georgia Tech game, even though the game resulted in a loss. Brown ended the day with nine rushes for 116 yards and a touchdown, and that was in only a little more than half of the game.
In the air, Brown showed a lack of skill only compounded by poor decision making. His stat line reads four completions in 17 attempts for 35 yards and an interception. Unlike the rushing yards, rarely did Brown look like an able-armed Division 1-A quarterback.
What happens next will be an interesting decision for coach Randy Edsall. O'Brien has shown little of the talent that made him a freshmen sensation last year. He was impressive in the opener against Miami, but has been largely disappointing since. Brown gave the Terps a spark in the extended run today against Georgia Tech and in a garbage-time drive against Temple, but questions remain about his throwing abilities.

The Maryland Terrapins made it more interesting than anyone would have imagined, but once again, a second half comeback came up just short for the Terps on Saturday as they fell to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 21-16 on Saturday. It was a lot closer than anyone predicted, but at the end of the day, it is still a loss for the Terps.
The biggest story of the day is the benching of Danny O'Brien and the "emergence" of C.J. Brown. O'Brien started the game 1-6 with an interception and was promptly pulled in the second quarter. Brown came in and played very erratically, but he had a 77-yard touchdown run and helped get the Terps back into the game with some timely throws. I wouldn't call him impressive, but there were signs. Coach Edsall has repeatedly said that O'Brien is his guy, but he didn't give him a very long leash today. And when Brown struggled to throw the ball, he opted not to bring him back in the game. If there wasn't already a quarterback controversy in College Park, there is one now.
The big silver lining from today is that the entire defensive unit played better than they have all Season. They have looked questionable all year long but they played exceptionally well today against the toughest offense they have faced all year. In fact, if the Yellow Jackets hadn't had such good starting field position all day long because of special teams and turnovers, they might have held the Yellow Jackets to even fewer points. They held tough today and that is certainly a good sign moving forward.
The Terps not only lost the game, but they also lost their lone senior along the offensive line Andrew Gonnella to what was reportedly a gruesome leg injury. It was so tough to watch apparently that ESPNU didn't even show a replay of it. He had to be carted off the field in an ambulance and it appears his season is over.
The Terps have a lot to feel good about from this one even though they lost, but they do leave Atlanta with a pretty big question mark at quarterback. It will be interesting to see who is under center when the Terps host Clemson on Homecoming next weekend.

In an incredible turn of fortune, the Maryland Terrapins now only trail Georgia Tech by five points. Halfway through the fourth quarter, the the Yellow Jackets lead 21-16. The comeback has come largely from the feet of backup quarterback C.J. Brown.
On fourth and goal from the one-yard line, runningback Davin Meggett burst in for aTerp touchdown. The second half has been all Terps, despite benching quarterback Danny O'Brien and a devastating leg injury to linemen Andrew Gonnella. Though the pass game is still contributing little for the Terps, Brown has done much on the ground. He has piled up more than 125 run yards and is averaging 14 yards a carry.
The hero for this Terps team remains the defense, which has kept the team in the game despite a less than inspiring effort from the offense for much of the game.

The Terrapins are still in this game, inexplicably, but they need to get some offense going to make it happen. That just got a lot harder because the Terps have lost Andrew Gonnella, the lone senior on their offensive line, to an injury that required him to be carted off in an ambulance. The trainers are tending to Gonnella's leg, and the TV crew deemed the injury gruesome enough that they refrained from even showing a replay of it. This isn't just an injury for the rest of this game, Gonnella might be done for the year if the injury is as bad as it seems.
Maryland will have to try finishing off this comeback without their most experienced and probably best offensive lineman. We'll have much more on this injury as we learn more.

Who needs the pass game? Maryland backup quarterback C.J. Brown busted a 77-yard run for a touchdown. The play started innocent enough, a faked inside hand-off to runningback Davin Meggett, but Brown kept the ball. Showing serious speed, Brown got to the edge and simply outran the Yellow Jacket defense.
The Terrapin defense has done a good job of limiting the Yellow Jacket offense in the second half, in turn keeping the game from becoming a blowout. After the Brown big play, if the Terp defense can muster another stop or two perhaps the Terrapins can make this a game.
Coach Randy Edsall figured to face significant questions for benching quarterback Danny O'Brien, but the long run from Brown may limit some of the questions. If Brown can continue to move the ball, perhaps the Terps will have a real quarterback controversy moving forward.

Through three quarters of football in Atlanta, Maryland Terrapin quarterbacks have completed one pass. One. The utter lack of a passing game has played a big part in the 21-3 deficit the Terps face against Georgia Tech.
Even with the putrid passing statistics, the Maryland defense is putting forward an admirable effort. Georgia Tech is known to be an offensive machine, but the Terps have slowed the Tech triple option in the third quarter. Georgia Tech did net a touchdown on its first possession of the second half, but the bulk of the yardage came on a long kick return from Tony Zenon.
Backup quarterback C.J. Brown, in after an ineffective Danny O'Brien got benched in the first half, has shown some spunk. Certainly Brown has thrown some questionable balls, including an interception in the end zone, but the qb has shown speed on his feet and zeal for the game.
The big play of the third came on a trick play. Brown threw a lateral to receiver Tony Logan, who then threw long to Kevin Dorsey. The play went for 39 yards, but ultimately it was not enough to get the Terps on the scoreboard in the second half. The drive stalled on a 4th and Goal from the 8-yard line.

In what has become a season of turmoil for the Maryland Terrapins, the first half against Georgia Tech followed a similar roller coaster. The Terps trail the Yellow Jackets 14-3, but the result could be worse.
The headline from this game is that Terp head coach Randy Edsall benched starting quarterback Danny O'Brien midway through the second quarter. An awful interception and lackluster play led to O'Brien's benching. Needless to say, the passing game has been incredibly ineffective thus far for the Terps. At the half, Maryland has completed as many passes to Terp receivers as Goergia Tech defenders.
The bright side is that the Maryland defense, despite giving up two touchdowns, has played relatively well. And that is without star linebacker/safety Kenny Tate. Before the season began, Tate and O'Brien were heralded as preseason ACC stars. At halftime through the fifth game of the year, neither is on the field, and the Terps struggles continue.
For the Terps to get back in the game, backup quarterback C.J Brown will need to lead the offense to some productivity. Runningback D.J. Adams is yet to record a carry for the Terps while Davin Meggett has done most of the heavy lifting. The defense needs to finish tackles and limit big plays from the explosive Yellow Jacket offense.

Danny O'Brien has had a miserable start in today's game against Georgia Tech, and midway through the second quarter coach Randy Edsall has moved him to the bench in favor of the backup C.J. Brown. It's important to note that Brown played one series against Towson before garbage time, so it is possible that Brown is just in for a change of pace.
O'Brien started the game 1-6 with an interception, hardly what was expected of the talented red-shirt sophomore. Brown offers a very different look because he has the ability to move the ball with his legs, something O'Brien lacks. Some have argued that because of this he is a little bit better fit for Gary Crowton's offense.
It will be interesting to see if this is a change that has been made for the rest of the game, or if Edsall just wants to put a different look in there. And if it is a change for the rest of the game, what does that mean for the Terps moving forward? Edsall has always said that there is no quarterback controversy and that O'Brien is his guy. We'll have to see if that changes after this one.

After three weeks of very poor first half performances, the Maryland Terrapins have come out of the gate a little bit better against Georgia Tech. Unfortunately it may not be enough to topple the powerful and explosive Yellow Jackets. The Terps have looked better on defense than they have recently, but they still trail 14-3 with just about nine minutes left in the second quarter.
A long punt return by Georgia Tech enabled them to start their drive at the Maryland 30 yard line. You can't expect to be successful when you give a team with this kind of offense starting field position like that.
The Terps had a very impressive drive in the first quarter, but on their other two efforts have gone three and out rather quickly. On their fourth drive, Danny O'Brien threw just threw a rather ugly interception, giving Georgia Tech roughly the same field position they exploited so successfully on their last drive.

Maryland defensive captain Kenny Tate is in uniform for the Terps but yet to hit the field. Mario Rowson started in tate's place.
The absence of Tate appeared to hurt the Maryland defense. The Terps received the opening kickoff and promptly went three and out. The stalled offensive set saw quarterback Danny O'Brien start with three straight incompletions. After a quick failed possession from the Terps, Georgia Tech took over on offense.
The Yellow Jacket offense has been prolific this season, and the opening drive showed why. The Ramblin' Wreck runningbacks rushed the ball seven times for more than 50 yards, and Jackets quarterback Tevin Washington broke into the Maryland end zone for a seven yard touchdown.
On the Terps second possesion, the offense turned to the run game with promising results. Showing a clear commitment to the running game, Maryland marched down the field with Davin Megget and freshmen Justus Pickett chruning up rush yards and burning valuable clock. Though the drive only resulted in a Nick Ferrara feild goal and three maryland points, time of possession will be key for the Terps if they are going to pull off the upset in Atlanta.

The Maryland Terrapins face a difficult road test when they visit the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets this Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Here is everything you need to know about Saturday's game:
Who: Maryland Vs. No. 13 Georgia Tech
Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium
When: Noon EST
TV Information: Rob Stone and Danny Kannell have the call on ESPNU.
Spread: Georgia Tech by 14.
Last game: Maryland crushed the Towson Tigers, 28-3, to improve its record to 2-2. Georgia Tech climbed to 5-0 with a 45-35 victory against the N.C. State Wolfpack. That offensive performance represents a down week for the Yellow Jackets, as 45 points is the second-lowest single-game scoring total they've registered this season.
Last season: The two schools haven't met since 2007, when host Maryland edged Georgia Tech, 28-26. The Terrapins held a 21-3 lead early in the second period, held off the Yellow Jackets' comeback, and narrowly prevailed. That victory ended Maryland's three-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets.
Key absences: Ankle injuries to linebacker Darin Drakeford and defensive lineman Andre Monroe will prevent them from suiting up for Maryland. Star linebacker Kenny Tate, arguably Maryland's top overall defender, is listed as doubtful due to an as-yet-unspecified injury. The linebacker injury bug seems to have gotten to Georgia Tech as well, with Jeremiah Attaouch and Daniel Drumond both battling injuries. Those two might not play either.

The Maryland Terrapins' star linebacker Kenny Tate has just been listed as doubtful for the game against No. 13 Georgia Tech Saturday in Atlanta, according to the Washington Post. The injury is unspecified, but it appears he will be unable to go against the ACC's Coastal Division-leading Yellow Jackets.
Losing Tate, widely believed to be the best player on the Maryland defense, could be huge for the Terrapins as they face the No. 1 ranked rushing offense in the country in the Yellow Jackets. So far this season the Terrapins are 2-2 (1-0) with wins over Miami and Towson and losses to West Virginia and Temple. The Yellow Jackets are 5-0 (2-0) and hold the advantage in the Coastal Division after defeating North Carolina and North Carolina State in the past two weeks.
Should he miss the game, Tate will also be missed in pass coverage, as the Jacket's first-year starter at quarterback, Tevin Washington, has their passing game playing well above its pre-season expectations. Tate was formerly a safety before being moved to linebacker in the off-season.
Tate has played in all four of the Terrapins contests to date, recording 35 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Injuries will deplete the Maryland Terrapins' defense against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets this Saturday, Oct. 9. Coach Randy Edsall announced Thursday ankle injuries to linebacker Darin Drakeford and lineman Andre Monroe have forced them out of the lineup. Both players suffered their injuries Sept. 24 against the Temple Owls, though Drakeford initially tweaked his ankle in the Terps' first game of the season.
The team's official depth chart (.PDF), released Oct. 3, indicates Maurice Hampton will take Monroe's slot at tackle, while Lorne Goree replaces Drakeford at middle linebacker, which in turn moves Demetrius Hartsfeld to weak-side linebacker.
Given Georgia Tech's powerful running game, and Maryland's uninspired performance against the lowly Towson Tigers last week, it's fair to say the Terrapins are in a spot of bother without two defensive starters. Yellow Jackets running back Orwin Smith leads the ACC in yards per carry (a whopping 15.3) and touchdowns (eight). The Terps need to stiffen up despite their injuries in order to contain Smith.
Prior to their injuries, Monroe and Drakeford had performed capably: three of Monroe's seven tackles were for a loss, and Drakeford tallied 17 tackles in just over one game's worth of action.

After struggling to get through an FCS school last week in Towson, the Maryland Terrapins head to Georgia to take on the high powered Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as 14 point dogs. While the Terps beat Towson 28-3, the game was much closer than the score indicated. Maryland had trouble getting Towson off the field and stopping the run.
The fact that Maryland struggled so much to stop the run is what makes the fact that they're only 14 point dogs on the road look a bit odd. If there is one thing Georgia Tech can do well, it's run the football with their triple option offense. Georgia Tech running back Orwin Smith averages 15.1 yards per carry... on the season. So far on the year, Tech is 4-0-1 against the spread while Maryland is just 1-3. Maryland was a 26 point favorite last week against Towson and struggled to beat them by 25. The over/under for the game is set at only 61 points, even with Georgia Tech sporting one of the highest scoring offenses in the country.

Maryland Terrapins head coach Randy Edsall tweeted his team's weekly uniform update today on his Twitter account.
We'll be wearing black helmets, black jerseys, and gold pants this weekend at Georgia Tech
Now, as far as tacky uniforms go... I don't think many people can complain about Maryland's choice this weekend when they take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. I'm a fan of tacky uniforms, and to me, this one really isn't all that tacky. It has the classic black and gold, which is hard to go wrong with. I'm a big fan of the matte black helmets, too. Maryland's in this uniform setup is nice too, because it includes the state of Maryland seal as the line that goes across the helmet, which is a nice touch. It's tough to see what's on the shoulders in this picture, but I imagine it will be the standard pixel fade of a combination of red, black, and yellow.

After an easy win against Townson last Saturday, the Maryland Terrapins return to conference action this week when they travel to Atlanta to face the undefeated Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-0, 3-0). The Terps' chances will hinge on their ability to stop Tech's high-powered rushing attack, but offensively, Maryland might be at an advantage because of the uncertain injury status of two of Georgia Tech's starting linebackers -- Jeremiah Attaouch and Daniel Drumond. Neither practiced on Monday in preparation of Georgia Tech's Saturday showdown with Maryland, and head coach Paul Johnson listed both as questionable for Saturday.
"I don’t know if he’ll play, but he’s O.K.," Johnson said of Attaochu. "We’re not going to have to shoot him or anything."
Johnson said Drummond’s injury "might be a tad worse" than Attaochu. Both sustained leg injuries in Tech’s win over N.C. State Saturday.
Al Groh's defense looks to rebound against the Terrapins (2-2, 1-0) after allowing 218 yards rushing in Georgia Tech's 45-35 win over North Carolina State last Saturday. Fortunately for Groh, Maryland does not sport one of the conference's better rushing attacks. Averaging 145.5 yards per game through the easiest part of their schedule, Maryland ranks just 7th in the ACC on the ground.
The loss of Attaouch in particular would be a big blow to the Yellow Jackets' defense though. He is second on the team with 29 total tackles, and he leads the team in both tackles for loss (5) and sacks (4). Drumond has been productive himself, totaling 24 tackles and one forced fumble.
Stay tuned throughout the week for further updates about the injury status of both key linebackers as Maryland tries to remain unbeaten in ACC play in a tough, Saturday road test.

After four home games, the Maryland Terrapins face a huge road test against the high-powered offense of No. 13 Georgia Tech.
