Maryland Vs. Wake Forest: Missed Oppurtunities, Leaving Points On Board Doom Terps

The Terrapins were right in the thick of it against Wake Forest on Saturday, but their failure to cash in on some golden opportunities cost them in the end.

Navy And Maryland Fall Short Of Bowl Eligibility

The 2011 season is coming to a close, and unfortunately for area teams like Navy and Maryland, the end to their respective seasons will be at the conclusion of the regular season, as both teams have been eliminated from bowl contention.

Maryland is 2-9 (1-6) after Saturday's 31-10 loss to Wake Forest, and has one game remaining against a surging NC State. The Terrapins' once promising season, after beating Miami, was ended by consecutive losses to West Virginia and Temple. It was muddled with injuries to key players and a quarterback controversy that was never settled. To this point, their lone FBS win was in their first game against Miami.

For Navy, their season has not been quite the nightmare of Maryland, but their three-point loss to San Jose State on Saturday sealed their bowl fate. At 4-7, their game next week against Army will not matter, at least as far as bowl implications are concerned.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Final Score: Maryland Fails To Take Advantage Of Scoring Chances, Falls 31-10

The Maryland Terrapins just lost the ninth game of the season to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons with a final score of 31-10. They are now 2-9.

In a season that has been incredibly frustrating for Maryland football fans, today might be one of the more frustrating days. Unlike other games when they were blown out from start to finish, of which there were quite a few, this one is almost worse because for a while it felt like the Terps had a legitimate shot at winning. They were tied at halftime but Wake Forest just pulled away in the second half and ended up losing pretty handily.

The big story line today has to be missed opportunities. On my count the Terps left 27 points on the board, and that isn't even a stretch. There was the Davin meggett touchdown that as called back after an offensive penalty, the fruitless drive that started at about Wake Forest's 15-yard-line, the dropped touchdown by Matt Furstenburg at the end of the game and the two relatively short field goals missed by Nick Ferrara.

There were a few players that played well enough to win this game, particularly C.J. Brown who did not make the big mistake and consistently put the Terps in a position to succeed. But they just didn't have enough pure difference makers to make the plays when they actually counted.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Score Update: Demon Deacons Starting To Pull Away, Now Lead 31-10

Remember when Maryland was tied with Wake Forest at the half and it looked like they might have a chance to win this game in the second half? Well, the game has followed somewhat of a different script. After their second touchdown pass of the fourth quarter, Wake Forest now leads by three touchdowns, and whatever hopes Maryland had of coming back appear to be dashed.

The real crushing blow came a few minutes earlier. Maryland blocked a particularly ugly punt attempt deep in Wake territory but was unable to score any points before turning the ball back over. On fourth and eight Maryland elected to call an out pass to the wide side which, unsurprisingly, fell incomplete. Wake Forest scored a few moments later.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Score Update: Fourth Quarter Touchdown Gives Wake 24-10 Lead

The second half of the game against Wake Forest today is starting to look a lot like the first half of every one of Maryland's other games this year. After begin competitive through the first two quarters, the Terps are starting to lose control of things and Wake Forest starting to pull away.

After yet another easy march down the field, Wake Forest cashed in on a fairly easy 10-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Price to Terence Davis. Davis had somehow got free from the Maryland defense and was wide open in the middle of the end zone. Just that kind of year.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Score Update: Wake Forest Leads 17-7 After Third Quarter Touchdown

The Maryland Terrapins put another strong drive together to start the third quarter, but as has been the case all afternoon, they failed to capitalize. Wake Forest got the ball back and marched straight down the field and scored a relatively easy rushing touchdown from two yards out. They now lead 17-7.

The Terps were in scoring position, and a touchdown run by Davin Meggett was called back after an offensive penalty. After that Nick Ferrara missed his second field goal of the afternoon. Wake Forest got the ball back with poor field position, but that didn't seem to matter very much as they marched right down the field. Brandon Pendergrass took in from two yards out and Wake Forest now has a ten point lead.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Score Update: Late Touchdown Pass Ties Game 7-7 At Halftime

The Maryland Terrapins have been able to move the ball today, something you haven't been able to say a lot this season, but it hasn't resulted in as many points as Randy Edsall and the Terrapin faithful may have hoped for. The game is tied at seven at halftime, but it you could argue the Terps should have the lead.

The final drive of the half was a great one for the Terps. C.J. Brown was able to move the chains with his feet before hitting Justus Pickett for a 31-yard touchdown on a wheel route. It was the big scoring play that the Terps had been waiting for all afternoon.

The story in the second quarter (up until that final drive) was very similar to the story after quarter number one. The Terps just simply have not been able to cash in when they get in a position to score. They've been able to move the ball (particularly on the ground where they're averaging over seven yards a play. But because of some missed opportunities, they only have seven points to show for it.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Score Update: Missed Opportunities Haunting Terps, Who Trail, 7-0

We've played one quarter in Winston-Salem, and Wake Forest leads Maryland, 7-0. The Terrapins are actually playing one of the stronger quarters of the season -- though that isn't saying much -- but missed opportunities have cost the Terps in this quarter.

On the Terps' first drive, they had a fourth and two from inside the 35-yard line. Maryland prepared to go for it, but a false start penalty pushed the ball back five yards and forced a punt. On the Terps' next drive, Davin Meggett erupted for a 47-yard run, but no points resulted when kicker Nick Ferrara pushed a 32-yard field goal wide.

The Demon Deacons' touchdown came on their second drive of the game. On third and goal, Tanner Price rolled out and found Cameron Smith across the middle of the field for the touchdown.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Score Update: Cameron Ford Touchdown Gives Demon Deacons 7-0 Lead

The Maryland Terrapins didn't give up a touchdown on their opponents' opening drive for once. Instead, the touchdown happened on the second drive. Tanner Price found Cameron Ford for a two-yard strike, and Wake Forest leads, 7-0, with 5:17 left to go in the first quarter.

It looked like the Terps would hold Wake Forest to a field goal when Marcus Whitfield blew up an end around play to push Wake Forest back to the Terps' 16-yard line. But on second and goal, the Demon Deacons got a catch and run to the two-yard line. On third down, Price rolled to his left and threw across his body to Ford in the back of the end zone for the score.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Injury Report: Lorne Goree Starts For Alex Twine At Linebacker

The Maryland Terrapins will have several different starters in the lineup when they take on Wake Forest at 3 p.m. on Saturday. As the game is about to begin, the team's injury report has caused several players to either change positions or shift into the starting lineup.

Most significantly, the absence of promising linebacker Alex Twine will force true freshman Lorne Goree into the starting lineup at linebacker. Goree will start at middle linebacker, and fellow starter Demetrius Hartsfield will shift to will linebacker.

On the other side of the ball, freshman Sal Conaboy will start at center along the offensive line, as normal starter Bennett Fulper is out with an injury.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-5, 4-3 ACC) welcome the Maryland Terrapins (2-8, 1-5 ACC) to Winston-Salem Saturday afternoon, with Wake Forest hoping to earn their sixth victory on the season and bowl eligibility.

Wake Forest lost their third straight game last Saturday, falling 31-28 to Clemson, and would need a victory over the Terrapins Saturday afternoon or a win over Vanderbilt in the season-finale to make a bowl game.

Maryland has lost sixth straight games, in a very frustrating and disappointing first season for new Terrapins head coach Randy Edsall. The Terrapins were manhandled 45-21 last Saturday against Notre Dame at FedEx Field.

Here are all the details you need about this afternoon's Terrapins vs. Demon Deacons matchup:

Alex Twine Injury: Maryland Football Linebacker Won't Play Vs. Wake Forest

The injuries keep piling up for the Maryland football team. Coach Randy Edsall just announced, via Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times, that promising freshman linebacker Alex Twine will not make the trip to Winston-Salem when the Terps face Wake Forest on Saturday due to injury.

The team has not disclosed the specific injury, as it never does. However, Edsall did say that Twine will likely be able to play for Maryland in its season finale against North Carolina State on November 26.

The freshman linebacker excelled in Maryland's loss to Notre Dame, picking up 12 tackles and being named the ACC's rookie of the week. It is not immediately clear how the Terps will replace him on Sunday.

Maryland Vs. Wake Forest: Terrapins To Wear White Helmets, White Tops

It's Wednesday afternoon, so that means it's the time when Maryland Terrapins head coach Randy Edsall tweets a picture of the Terps uniforms for the week.

We'll be wearing white helmets, white jerseys, and red pants this week. http://t.co/fszcXre1
Nov 16 via TwitpicFavoriteRetweetReply

This uniform will sport the white helmet with the gray turtle shell design. The team will also wear white tops that sport red numbers that fade to black with a gold and black outline. The pants will be Maryland red with the gold stripe down the leg. The Terps have worn the white tops and white helmets now for multiple times and are much more tame than some of the other uniform combinations, such as the seal of the state uniform the Terps wore last week.

College Football Odds, Maryland Vs. Wake Forest: Terps Heavy Underdogs Against Demon Deacons

The Maryland Terrapins (2-8, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) wind down their disappointing season this Saturday, Nov. 19, on the road against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-5, 4-3 ACC). It's the penultimate game of the season for Randy Edsall's squad, and as one might expect given the Terps' record, they're heavy underdogs.

According to SB Nation partner OddsShark, the oddsmakers favor the Demon Deacons by 10.5 points despite their having lost three straight games. Then again, Maryland has lost six straight itself, most recently a 45-21 defeat against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at FedEx Field.

When the teams met last season, the oddsmakers favored Maryland by 5.5 points, and it responded by cruising to a 62-14 victory.
