The 2011 Independence Bowl will pit North Carolina from the ACC against Missouri from the Big 12, UNC announced on Sunday. The Tar Heels leap up to this game after finishing 7-5, while Missouri also finished 7-5 out of the Big 12.
The Tar Heels seemed ticketed to go to the Military Bowl, but instead rose to the independence Bowl after Virginia Tech earned an at-large bid to the Sugar Bowl. The Tar Heels, at 3-5 in the ACC, are the final ACC bowl-eligible team. Missouri finished 7-5 after a tumultuous season that saw their head coach get arrested for driving under the influence.
