Maryland Vs. Iona: Terps Blown Out In Second Half In Puerto Rico, Fall 89-63 To Gaels

The depleted Maryland Terrapins were blown out for the second time in three games at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan. This time, they fell to the Iona Gaels 89-63. The Gaels scored an astonishing 52 second half points against the Terps as they cruised to the easy win.

Sean Mosley and Terrell Stoglin led the Terps again, with the senior Mosley leading the way with 21 points. Stoglin chipped in with 17 of his own, but the Terps had little contribution on the offensive end from anyone else. Turnovers were particularly damaging to the Terps, who committed 10 additional turnovers in the second half for a whopping 26 in the game.

Iona is a very talented mid-major team that is capable of challenging for an NCAA at-large berth. Purdue was lucky to beat them in the first round after a Robbie Hummel three pointer at the buzzer put the Boilermakers through. But regardless of their talent, getting blown out by 23 points in just the second 20 minutes of basketball has to be discouraging for Mark Turgeon and Terps’ fans.

Maryland will now have the holiday week off with an opportunity to rebound against Florida Gulf Coast at the Comcast Center on Friday.

Maryland Vs. Iona Score Update: Terps Trail Gaels By Three At Half In Puerto Rico

At halftime of their final game in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Maryland Terrapins trail the Iona Gaels, 37-34. A late push at the end of the first half cut the Gaels' lead from double digits to three. Iona is a talented mid-major team that is fully capable of challenging for an NCAA at-large berth. They lost by only one to Purdue on Friday night in San Juan and were in complete control throughout the first half on Sunday until the Terps made their final minute push to get back in it.

The Terps shot the ball extremely well, converting 62% from the floor. Turnovers, however, plagued Maryland and allowed Iona to jump out to a comfortable lead for most of the half.  Maryland finished the half with an amazing 16 turnovers.

After his career high 32 points on Friday, Terrell Stoglin leads the Terps with 9 points. Stoglin finished his the half with a dynamic and-one three point play which cut Iona's lead to three. The Terps will look to get out of Puerto Rico with a 2-1 record in the second half.

Puerto Rico Tip-Off Bracket Update: Alabama To Face Purdue In Final; Terrell Stoglin Leads Terps To Win

A quick recap of the Friday action in the 5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off:

Alabama 70, Wichita State 60

The Crimson Tide blocked a tournament record 14 shots in defeating the Shockers by ten on Friday night. The win earns Alabama a spot in the final. Tony Mitchell scored 26 points for Alabama, and the Crimson Tide held Wichita State to just 33.8 percent shooting from the floor. The Crimson Tide will play Purdue in Sunday's championship game.

Maryland 78, Colorado 71

The Terrapins rebounded in a big way from their opening game performance against Alabama, getting a career high 32 points from Terrell Stoglin in the seven point win over the Buffaloes. Maryland now has a day off and will play Sunday at 2:00 PM against Iona for fifth place. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Colorado will face Western Michigan for seventh place.

Iona 94, W. Michigan 88

Scott Machado had 17 points, 15 assists and five steals for the Gaels in a game that was not as close as the final score would indicate. Iona led 42-29 at halftime, and by as many as 21 points during the second half in this consolation bracket game. Iona will face Maryland at 2:00 PM Sunday. Western Michigan will take on Colorado.

Purdue 85, Temple 77

Lewis Jackson scored 26 points for the Boilermakers, and Robbie Hummel added 20 as Purdue pulled away late to defeat the Owls. The Boilermakers will take on the Crimson Tide in Sunday's final.

Maryland Vs. Colorado Final Score: Led By Terrell Stoglin's Career High 32, Terps Bounce Back Against Buffaloes, 78-71

After a dismal 42 point offensive performance against Alabama in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Maryland Terrapins bounced back on Friday night to defeat the Colorado Buffaloes, 78-71. The Terps were led by Terrell Stoglin, who scored a career high 32 points, going four for seven from behind the arc and shooting a red hot 57% from the floor. Perhaps most impressively, Stoglin scored 14 points after he picked up his fourth foul with over 11 minutes remaining in the game.

In the first half, the Terps had a carry-over from Thursday night and played a sloppy and sluggish on the offensive end. But it was a different story in the second, as they exploded for 51 points (nine points more than they scored in two halves yesterday) to cruise to the seven point win. Mark Turgeon did an impressive job of rallying the team from a double digit deficit after three ugly halves of hoops in San Juan. The Terps cleaned it up and committed only three turnovers in the second half. In addition to Stoglin, guards Nick Faust and Sean Mosley both chipped in with 15 points a piece. Both did their damage from downtown, with the freshman Faust going three for six from behind the arc and the senior leader Mosley hitting on four of six. The three pointer was huge for the Terps, as Faust, Stoglin, and Mosley combined to shoot 52% from three.

The Terps, 2-1 in this young season, now have a day off and will play Sunday at 2:00 PM against Iona, who defeated Western Michigan 94-88 earlier in the day. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Maryland Vs. Colorado Score Update: Terps Trail Buffs By 8 At Intermission

20 minutes is in the books from Puerto Rico, as the Maryland Terrapins trail the Colorado Buffaloes, 36-24 in the consolation bracket of the Puerto Rico Tip Off. The two teams are fairly evenly matched statistically -- Maryland is shooting 42.1 percent from the floor compared to 46.2 percent for Colorado; both teams have made three three-pointers; and neither squad has shot a large number more free throws than the other.

The main factor why CU holds the eight-point advantage is turnovers. Maryland has turned it over five times compared to just once by the Buffs, and CU has converted those five miscues into 10 easy points.

Sean Mosley leads all scorers with 9 points; Austin Dufault has netted 8 for CU through the first 20 minutes.

In opening round action Thursday, Wichita State beat Colorado 67-58 to send the Buffs to the losers' bracket, while Alabama easily dismissed the Terps, 62-42.

Back after the game with a complete wrap up and a summary of all the day's action from San Juan.

Puerto Rico Tip-Off Bracket Update: Wichita State Advances, Will Face Alabama

The first day of the Puerto Rico Tip Off is in the books and there were some surprising results from the first day of action. Lets take a look at how the bracket stands now, and what the four matchups you will see today look like.

The Maryland Terrapins simply could not get their offense in rhythm, and the Alabama Crimson Tide scored just enough for a comfortable 62-42 win. The Tide were led by Tony Mitchell who started fast and scored a game high 17 points.

The big upset of the day probably belonged to Wichita State who beat Colorado 67-58. They outscored the Buffaloes 33-26 in the first half and never looked back. The Shockers advance to play Alabama in the semifinals this afternoon while the Terps wil play Colorado in the consolation bracket.

As expected, Temple handled Western Michigan pretty handily, earning a comfortably 69-55 victory. Temple was paced by a balance attack, with all five of their starters scoring in double figures.

The final game featured Purdue and Iona, and it was a lot closer than a lot of Boilermakers might have predicted. A Robbie Hummel three pointer put Purdue up by one with 20 seconds left, and they held on for a 91-90 victory. They'll face Temple today while Iona will face Western Michigan.

Maryland Vs. Colorado Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Maryland Terrapins lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide in pretty embarrassing fashion yesterday, but that doesn't cut their trip to Puerto Rico short at all. They'll be entered into the Consolation bracket and could still have a successful trip South of the Border.

They'll take on the Colorado Buffaloes today, one of the other recognizable names in the field. If they have shot at being successful in this game, their offense will have to show up with a lot more offensive rhythm and execution then they showed against Alabama.

Game Date/Time: Friday, November 18; 5:30pm ET

Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

TV Schedule
National: ESPN3 with Jon Sciambi and Hubert Davis on the call

Radio Schedule
Maryland: 980 AM

Puerto Rico Tip-Off: Maryland To Face Colorado After Buffs Fall To Wichita State

After being blown out by Alabama in their opening game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Terps will come back on the second day of the early season holiday tournament to face another big six BCS conference foe – the Colorado Buffaloes out of the Pac 12.

The Buffs fell to Missouri Valley mid-major Wichita State, 67-58 in San Juan. The Shockers blitzed Colorado at the end of the first half and the start of the second half to cruise to the nine point win. Wichita State is expected to challenge for an NCAA tournament bid this season, playing in one of the top mid-major multi-bid conferences in the country.

Colorado was led by Utah transfer Carlon Brown, who dropped 15 points on the Shockers and was the Buffs’ only double digit scorer. Colorado committed 17 turnovers and shot under 60 percent from the free throw line in the loss. Colorado is expected to finish in the bottom half of what was projected to be the worst major conference in the country this season. After scoring only 42 points, the Terps and Mark Turgeon will look to bounce back and get their second win of the season. Tipoff is set for 6:30 in San Juan.

Maryland Vs. Alabama Final Score: Terps Blown Out, 62-42, In Puerto Rico Tip-Off Opener

The Maryland Terrapins' opener in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament did not go nearly as well as planned. The Terps couldn't shoot straight all game and were blown out in a 62-42 loss to No. 16 Alabama, a game that was never close after the opening stages. The Terps will now play the loser of Wichita State vs. Colorado on Friday.

Alabama jumped out to a 17-5 lead to begin the game and it was over from there. The Crimson Tide took a 16-point halftime lead, and the Terps never got any closer than that in the second half.

Tony Mitchell led the way for Alabama with 17 points and nine rebounds, including a thunderous dunk off a rebound in the second half. James Padgett had nine point to lead the Terps, who shot just 27 percent from the field in the loss.

Alabama will face the winner of Wichita State vs. Colorado next.

Maryland Vs. Alabama Score Update: Terps Getting Blown Out, Trail 36-20 At Halftime

The first real test of the Mark Turgeon era has not gone well for the Maryland Terrapins. After one half against No. 16 Alabama, the Terps trail, 36-20, and it's only that close because Sean Mosley nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Needless to say, this Puerto Rico Shootout opening-round game has not gone well for the Terps.

Alabama raced ahead to a 17-5 lead early and only increased the lead from there. The Terps eventually tried to go to a zone defense to slow Alabama's offense, but that didn't work, as Alabama started raining three-pointers. Tony Mitchell had an outstanding half, scoring 15 points in beating Maryland from inside and outside.

The Terps, meanwhile, have hit just five field goals in the entire half. With Pe'Shon Howard injured, the Terps haven't been able to get into their offense and have missed all their perimeter shots. Mosley's three-pointer to close the half was the Terps' first three-pointer of the half.

Puerto Rico Shootout 2011 Results: Purdue, Temple Advance In Opening Round

The 2011 Puerto Rico Shootout is underway, and already two teams have advanced to the second round. First, Temple topped Western Michigan in a fairly easy 69-55 victory, and later, Purdue edged Iona, 91-90, in a thriller. That means Purdue and Temple will square off on Friday, with Iona taking on Western Michigan.

The Purdue-Iona game came down to the wire. After Arizona transfer Momo Jones gave Iona a two-point lead, Purdue called timeout and ran an excellent play to free Robbie Hummel up for a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining. Jones turned the ball over on Iona's next possession, and despite two missed free throws, Purdue held on when Iona's half-court shot at the buzzer missed.

In the early game, Temple built a 16-point halftime lead and coasted to victory. The five Owls starters all scored in double figures, so it was a balanced effort that carried them to victory.

Maryland Vs. Alabama Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Maryland Terrapins are Puerto Rico right now as they await their matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide. That game kicks off at 5 pm and can be seen on ESPN2.

This will be a very difficult early season test for the Terrapins, who don't appear to have the talent or depth to run with the Tide. Maryland does not play very many players and the Tide has a lot of talent, including one of the best incoming freshman classes in the Nation. For a closer look at the Tide and how they might exploit this matchup, let's take a look at Testudo Times' preview of the game.

I do think Alabama might be a bit worse than their #15 ranking, unless the NCAA is way worse this year than I had expected. But they're not a good match-up for the Terrapins, with a dominant big man, a slow tempo, and a suffocating defense. Maryland will have to be much more tidy than they were on Sunday to have a real shot at this one, and James Padgett or Ashton Pankey will have to show up with another unexpected performance.

We'll be following this game as well as the Terrapins run through the rest of the tournament (hopefully) in this StoryStream. For more info on the Terps, check out Testudo Times.

Maryland Basketball To Play Alabama In Puerto Rico Tip-Off First Round

The University of Maryland Men's basketball team will square off against Alabama in their opening game at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, a preseason tournament that will take place from November 17-20. The rebuilding Terrapins will be facing an Alabama team that narrowly missed the NCAA tournament last year after finishing 12-4 in the SEC and winning the conference's western division.

Alabama ended up advancing to the finals of the National Invitational Tournament, where they lost to Wichita State, who will also play in the Tip-Off. With each squad on the same side of the bracket, there is a strong possibility that they will meet again. If not, Maryland will end up playing Wichita State, pitting the Terrapins head coach Mark Turgeon against the program he led from 1999 to 2007, a run that included an NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2006.

Wichita State will play Colorado in their opening game, with the winners to face each other in the next round.

Maryland Basketball To Play In Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Field Finalized

The Maryland basketball team will take part in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, one of several preseason college basketball tournaments. On Wednesday, the field for the event was finalized, and it includes several formidable opponents for the Terps.

The Terps will compete against Purdue, Alabama, Temple, Colorado, Iona, Western Michigan and Wichita State, according to ESPN's press release. Two of those teams -- Purdue and Temple -- made the NCAA Tournament last season, and two others -- Alabama and Colorado -- were bubble teams that barely missed. All seven of those teams were in the postseason last year, with Purdue and Temple in the NCAA Tournament, Wichita State, Colorado and Alabama in the NIT and Western Michigan and Iona in the College Invitational Tournament.

The Puerto Rico Tip-Off will take place from November 17 to 20. First-round matchups have not yet been announced. With four power-conference schools and four mid-majors, the obvious guess is that Maryland would face either Temple, Iona, Wichita State or Western Michigan.
