NFL Draft 2011 Results: Ras-I Dowling Selected By New England Patriots

Stay connected for news and updates

Our first semi-local college prospect is off the board. WIth the 33rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select Ras-I Dowling, a cornerback from the University of Virginia.

The Virginia cornerback is a logical pick for the Patriots, who need help in the secondary to maintain a strong defense. Dowling only played three games last year because of a left ankle injury, but had eight career interceptions as an all-world cornerback at Virginia. His draft stock probably took a hit because of the ankle injury, but at No. 33 overall, he still recovered fairly well. He was able to raise his stock at the NFL Draft combine, posting a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash, one of the highest times among defensive backs.

Torrey Smith and Ryan WIlliams remain unclaimed early in the second round.
