Maryland Basketball To Name Comcast Center Court After Gary Williams

Stay connected for news and updates

Gary Williams' press conference to announce his retirement from Maryland basketball was an emotional moment for so many involved. It became particularly emotional when University President Wallace Loh announced the University's plans to name the Comcast Center court in Williams' honor.

"You are a champion of the court, and you are a champion in the community," Loh said. "Your legacy here will live forever. Therefore, I will join Kevin Anderson in recommending to the Board of Regents that this court will be named for Gary Williams."

The crowd assembled roared its approval, and Williams seemed close to the verge of tears. When he was asked about it later, he paused for several seconds before answering.

"It's a great honor," he said. "I've had some really good people help with that, which I really appreciate. I'm fortunate in terms of time to be able to coach here as long as I have. At the same time, when that happens, hopefully a lot of people fell the same way that they were responsible for that happening."
