The Gonzaga defensive back was said to be choosing between Maryland, Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Northwestern.
Maryland Terrapins fans better take notice of the young man from Gonzaga College High School in the District on Wednesday. Defensive back Devin Butler will make his choice of where to attend and the list of schools include Maryland, Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Northwestern.
Butler has said that distance will not drive his decision to choose a school after he and his parents rented a car to make a Midwestern trip
I loved all the places [on the trip] really. They were all great - coaches were great, players were great campuses were great. I loved them all.
Butler received 21 scholarship offers this offseason, so there was no shortage of choices on which school to go to. Butler started at cornerback for Gonzaga last season and intercepted seven passes, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

While the Randy Edsall era in College Park has made recruiting news for all the wrong reasons in recent months, they received a solid pick-up for the class of 2013 when Mike Parker, a four-star rated athlete by Rivals from Nokesville, Virginia (Kettle Run High School), committed to the Terps on Twitter Tuesday evening:
Thank you to everyone who has helped me out. Through a painful process. I've decided to become apart of the Maryland football team in 2014!
— Mike Parker (@That_Parker) March 27, 2012
Parker is a 6-foot-3, 205-lb. corner and wideout rated as the fifth-best overall "athlete position" by Rivals, and the 114th-best overall prospect in the 2013 signing class. Per Rivals, Parker had offers from Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Boston College and Stanford, among others. The Terps already have one commitment, from three-star defensive back Jarrett Ross.

Stefon Diggs became the toast of Terp Nation a couple weeks ago when he committed to his hometown university. The era of untainted good feeling lasted all of 13 days, when he sent forth this tweet:
Everybody need to get off Jeremy Lin egg roll and dumplings he's good though .
If this were a movie, this would be the scene when the needle screeches off the record (I know, I know, just go with it) and everyone stares at Stefon via the Internet.
In all seriousness, we hope that someone sits him down and explains that you can't say things like that, not when you're a prized recruit. But the good news is, he's just 18 and there's plenty of time for him to learn.
Friday evening was a big night for the Terrapins football program, as five-star recruit Stefon Diggs, a local product from Good Counsel, committed to the University of Maryland. Diggs, the All-Met Defensive Player of the Year, chose Maryland over other college football stalwarts Auburn, Florida and Ohio State. He is expected to play wide receiver for Maryland.

There's a lot of love in College Park on Friday night, as five-star recruit Stefon Diggs made it official and chose Maryland at Looney's Pub on Route 1. Head coach Randy Edsall quickly tweeted and released a statement that he was happy to have Diggs on board, and the top prospect expressed the same sentiment towards Edsall and the Terp football program. Diggs said all the right things for Terp fans at the announcement ceremony, and he continued that afterwards when speaking with the press.
He's a good guy. He's a very stand-up guy. I believe in his plan for succeeding in the classroom academically. That's one of the important reasons I chose UMD cause I feel like I'll succeed. He accepts nothing but your best. Some people have a problem with it, but it's nothing wrong with structure.
Diggs said all the right things for Terp fans at the announcement ceremony, and he carried that over afterwards when speaking with the press.

Friday was a big night for Randy Edsall and the University of Maryland football program. The Terps landed five-star recruit Stefon Diggs, a local product from Good Counsel. As the week progressed, rumors and reports swirled that Diggs was heavily leaning towards the Terps, but Florida and Ohio State remained in the running.
Diggs sent his letter of intent to Maryland earlier in the day but made it officially public at Looney's Pub in College Park, announcing in front of a heavily partisan Terp crowd. As you can see, donning the Maryland hat sent the crowd into a frenzy and they immediately broke into a chant.
Video of the announcement after the jump:
It didn't take long for University of Maryland head football coach Randy Edsall to chime in on the huge commitment of Stefon Diggs in College Park on Friday night. It's the high-point in Edsall's short time at Maryland after a disastrous first season. As you can imagine, the Terps coach is thrilled to have Diggs in the fold.
Via @PaulTenorio:
"We're very pleased to receive the commitment of Stefon. He is an impact player who brings a playmaking ability that will enhance our team and certainly helps us offensively. He's a great competitor and a team player who loves to work every day and win. We're honored and happy to have him."
The coach also tweeted about Diggs' choice of Maryland:
Excited to have Stefon Diggs on board with us. He is an impact player that we're happy to have committed to Maryland Football.

The waiting is over and Stefon Diggs has made his decision. He will play football at the University of Maryland beginning this fall.
Diggs makes it official. He's going to Maryland.
#allmets
The Good Counsel product, a five-star-rated wide receiver by Rivals, made his decision at Looney's Pub in College Park Friday evening. Diggs had reportedly been considering Ohio State, Florida, and Auburn in addition to his hometown Terps. The wide receiver said that his mother had faxed the National Letter of Intent to Maryland earlier that day, making his commitment binding.
Diggs is the most prominent recruit to commit to Maryland during the tenure of second-year head coach Randy Edsall and first-year offensive coordinator Mike Locksley. The wide receiver visited Maryland's campus last weekend, where he was hosted by quarterback (and rumored want-away) Danny O'Brien and took in the Maryland basketball game against North Carolina.

Stefon Diggs, a Maryland native and five-star-rated wide receiver recruit by Rivals, will make his decision Friday as to where he wants to play college football next fall. The announcement, which is expected to favor the hometown Maryland Terrapins, will come at around 9 p.m., according to a tweet by Comcast reporter Sebastian Salazar.
Salazar says Diggs is holding an event at Looney's Pub on Route 1, right in the heart of College Park, that will start at 6 p.m. and run til 9 with his decision being made at the end. It had been previously published that Diggs' decision will come at 6 p.m., but that looks to no longer be the case.

Today is a huge day for Maryland recruiting, as local receiver Stefon Diggs will make his Collegiate announcement. While he is the typical star player that could pick his own school, it is starting to look seriously like he will actually choose the Terps.
Talking to a few more people this morning I am more convinced than ever Stefon Diggs is #Maryland bound barring a surprise.
— Mike Farrell (@rivalsmike) February 10, 2012
There have been a lot of sources claiming that they know where Diggs is going to announce, and to be honest, none of them really do. But Mike Farrell is one of the most trusted names in this business, so he probably has as good of a handle on this thing as anyone. Throw in the always trust-worth Josh Barr and the fact that he is reportedly announcing his decision in College Park, and it would be a major letdown if he chooses to go anywhere else.

Friday afternoon could be a big day for Randy Edsall and the University of Maryland football program. Local five-star recruit Stefon Diggs is set to announce his college choice at 6:00 PM. Late Thursday, word came down that the announcement would take place at Looney's Pub on Route 1 right in the heart of College Park.
Diggs is announcing at the Looneys in college park tomorrow at 6pm

It was reported earlier on Thursday that Diggs was expecting to choose Maryland over Ohio State, Florida, and Auburn. Looney's is currently where Edsall does his weekly radio show. Maryland fans are hopeful that the the Good Counsel product planning the announcement at a Terp establishment means he will be playing across the way at Byrd Stadium in a little over six months.

Citing a source close to Stefon Diggs, Josh Barr of the Washington Post is reporting that the Maryland high school star will announce on Friday that he will play for the Maryland Terrapins. Diggs was going to announce his decision live on Comcast SportsNet, but has since backed out of that arrangement. Diggs is a five-star recruit and is widely regarded as one of the best wide receivers in the country. He made his official visit to Maryland on Saturday.
Diggs is also considering Auburn, Florida and Ohio State. Most seem to believe it's down to Maryland or the Buckeyes, and though no one else has a report similar to Barr's, there are some in the know who are backing him up. Mike Farrell of Rivals.com speculated earlier today that Diggs will commit to Maryland.

Stefon Diggs, a Maryland native and five-star wide receiver recruit by Rivals, will make his decision Friday on where he wants to play college football next fall. However, the announcement will be made at 6 p.m., not 10 p.m. as originally published. According to Mike Farrell of Rivals, who tweeted the time change Thursday afternoon, Diggs is deciding between the hometown Maryland Terrapins and Ohio St. Buckeyes.
Contrary to earlier reports, it appears that Digg's announcement will not be televised, according to this tweet by Sebastian Salazar of CSN Washington.
Stefon Diggs won't be announcing decision on Comcast SportsNet. He committed to do it earlier but backed out. Wish him luck w/tough decision
Rumors have Diggs, who's the top unsigned recruit for the Class of 2012, leaning toward the Buckeyes but College Park is hoping the Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, MD stud will stay close to home.

Stefon Diggs, a Maryland native and five-star wide receiver recruit by Rivals, says he's ready to announce where he will be playing college football next fall, tweeted Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports.com Tuesday. According to Ermann, Diggs will make his announcement Friday at 10 p.m on Comcast Sports Network.

Stefon Diggs, the five-star wide receiver recruit from Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, MD, received quite the warm welcome yesterday on his official visit to Maryland. Not only did Terrapins fans attending the Maryland-North Carolina game create signs letting Diggs know how badly they wanted him at College Park, there was word the fans at Comcast Center were chanting his name pregame. Now, video of the fans doing just such a thing have appeared. After the jump, check out Terps fans doing there best to recruit Diggs in harmonic unison:
Five-star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, MD is regarded as the best high school prospect yet to commit to a school this year, and it just so happens Diggs is on his official visit to Maryland today. The Maryland fans seem determined to do all they can to convince Diggs that College Park is where he should be. Fans attending today's Maryland-North Carolina men's basketball game have created signs letting Diggs know how badly they want him to be a Terrapin, and it appears they have become quite vocal at the Comcast Center reiterating that feeling:
Maryland can't officially hand out signs to fans in an attempt to woo five-star football recruit Stefon Diggs as he watches the Maryland-North Carolina basketball game, but that won't stop fans from taking matters into their own hands. Here's what several fans are handing out to those waiting in line for tickets.
Saturday is a big day in Terpland. Not only is the Maryland basketball team hosting No. 6 North Carolina, but the football team is hosting a number of recruits, most notably five-star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from Good Counsel, the top unsigned player in the Class of 2012. Naturally, the team must really clean the football facility up to make a good impression on the kid.
Here's how they're doing it, via Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun.
Wide receiver Stefon Diggs, a five-star recruit from Maryland, is visiting with the Maryland Terrapins. His high school teammate, Wes Brown, committed to the Terps on National Signing Day and it was previously thought that the two players could be a packaged deal. Instead, it looks like they could go their separate ways. The latest rumor has Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes emerging as late favorites to capture the talented wideout's signature.
Of course, this is still a whole lot of rumor and not a lot of concrete information, but this could be a massive blow to the Terps. Diggs would, if he enrolled at Maryland, be one of the most talented and highly coveted talents to ever come to the school. Diggs has visited Florida and Auburn in addition to Maryland and Ohio State.

Maryland is hosting Good Counsel five-star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, the top recruit available after National Signing Day, this weekend. That alone has caused Terps fans to get excited at the idea of a top prospect staying home for once. This interview, dug up by Testudo Times, should excite Terps fans even more.
It's an interview by Rivals conducted with Diggs and high-school teammate Wes Brown, a four-star running back who switched his commitment to Maryland late in the signing process. Pay close attention to this line:
Five-star wide receiver recruit Stefon Diggs of Our Lady Of Good Counsel in Olney, Md. is probably the top recruit in the nation still unsigned after National Signing Day 2012. The Maryland Terrapins have made a late push to sign the local product and will host him for a visit over the weekend, as SB Nation's Maryland blog Testudo Times reminds us.
Testudo Times reports that Diggs will attend Saturday's basketball game between the Terps and North Carolina at Comcast Center and that quarterback Danny O'Brien will host him.
We already knew that this was in the works, but we've gotten some extra confirmation that it is, indeed, happening. And, as a bonus, we've been told his host on the official visit will be Danny O'Brien, who would likely be Diggs' quarterback in College Park. I'm not sure I could've picked a better host.
Ohio State is probably the favorite for Diggs' services, but that final visit means a lot for the Terps' chances. Diggs' family is close with Terps head coach Randy Edsall, and Maryland already brought in three of Diggs' high-school teammates, including four-star running back Wes Brown. The Terps may very well pull a rabbit out of their hat to improve their recruiting class.

Randy Edsall was hired too late in the process to make a real significant impact on the Terrapins 2011 recruiting class, so this was really the first class that he could get his hands on. And considering that the Terps are coming off a 2-10 season, the class they were able to secure is actually pretty impressive.
The Terps finished strong and came in with the 47th best class in the Nation according to Scout.com. They rank them by the Conference over at Rivals, and the Terps are given the 7th best class in the Conference, right behind North Carolina. The Terps got some important local recruits in Wes Brown and Albert Reid, which could set the foundation of even stronger classes moving forward.

Every year, coaches are interviewed about where their recruiting classes rank on National Signing Day, and every year, they say something about how the rankings don't mean anything and they love the work they did. Maryland football coach Randy Edsall is no exception. Here's his version of that cliche quote during his press conference just now.
Edsall: "The only thing that matters is our evaluations. All these other evaluations don’t matter to me and my staff."
— Jakob Engelke (@Jakob_Engelke) February 1, 2012
Ah, but see, here's the problem with this...
Maryland football has officially announced 24 commitments on National Signing Day 2012, 20 of which have faxed letters of intent already in. The Terps' class is headlined by four-star running back Wes Brown, a Good Counsel product that switched his commitment to Maryland at the Under Armour Game earlier in the month.
More: On the 2012 Terps Recruiting Class
Brown is one of several four-star recruits signed by the Terps. The others include Friendship Collegiate running back Albert Reid, Massachusetts linebacker Abner Logan, Good Counsel offensive lineman Mike Madaris and Atlanta offensive lineman Nick Brigham. A complete list of all of Maryland's recruits can be found here.
The Terps did miss out on a number of recruits, including North Carolina offensive lineman D.J. Reader, who went to Clemson. Top in-state recruits Eddie Goldman and Ronald Darby both went to Florida State. Five-star athlete Stefon Diggs of Good Counsel did not make a decision and is making an official visit to Maryland over the weekend.
The Terps' class is ranked No. 7 in the ACC and No. 43 overall as of now, according to Scout.com.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Highly-recruited defensive tackle Eddie Goldman was only one of 19 students at Northeast's Friendship Collegiate Academy to announce their college choices in a Wednesday morning ceremony. More on that a little later, but we just wanted to pass along a couple of quotes from Goldman's teammate and University of Maryland commit, running back Albert Reid.
One of the few remaining targets for the Marland Terrapins has decided to go elsewhere in college, lineman D.J. Reader will go to Clemson instead, coach Dabo Swinney confirmed on the ESPN National Signing Day 2012 special. Reader was considered a Maryland lean until recently, but flipped his recruitment within the last day according to reports.
Reader is an enormous three-star offensive guard/defensive tackle from Greensboro, North Carolina. The Terps would have likely used him on defense at nose tackle, which is a very important position for them as they move to the 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Brian Stewart. This would have been a very good get for them, but they only got on Reader late in the game so it is not surprising that they did not end up with him.

Stefon Diggs, a five-star athlete from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md., will not be announcing his college decision on National Signing Day 2012, but he remains a major topic of discussion. Why? It appears that Maryland is making a late push to sign him, as he's scheduled to take a visit to campus this weekend.
One analyst even believes that Diggs could ultimately choose Maryland. Former Illinois coach Ron Zook, who is now a CBS Sports analyst, said he thinks the Terps have a legitimate shot. Via MaxPreps:
Former Illinois head coach Ron Zook, who was impressed with Diggs even as a ninth grader, believes there's a chance that Diggs will stay at home to play for Maryland.
Zook said that Maryland assistant Mike Locksley has a great relationship with Diggs and his family and could convince the nation's No. 2 athlete to sign with Maryland.
Zook and Locksley have worked together, so it's possible Zook is just giving him dap. Most analysts believe Florida is in the lead for Diggs' services, with Auburn chasing behind him.

National Signing Signing Day 2012 is finally here, and while some of the big names have yet to even verbally commit to a school, there are a lot of recruits that have already made those decisions. For them this is the first day that they can fax in their LOI's and become an official commitment to their schools. Randy Edsall has been tweeting all morning when he receives LOI's from specific recruits, and that includes one of their most important local recruits, Wes Brown.
Wes Brown (Good Counsel) is on board and coming to Maryland.
— Randy Edsall (@RandyEdsall) February 1, 2012
Brown committed somewhat late, during the Under Armor All-American Bowl, but was instantly in the conversation for best player in the incoming class. You never know what is going to happen on Signing Day, so getting his commitment official is a big deal for Maryland.
Some other names that have officially committed to Maryland this morning are; Shawn Petty, Perry Hills, Anthony Nixon, Brock Dean and PJ Gallo.

As National Signing Day officially approaches the Maryland Terrapins are hoping to pull in two four-star recruits. One of the recruits is a local player in four-star running back Wes Brown from Olney, Md out of Our Lady Of Good Counsel. Brown committed in early January, but it won't be made official until signing day. Brown is rated as the No. 14 running back of the 2012 recruiting class.
The Terps are also hoping to land four-star linebacker Abner Logan from Brookline, MA out of Dexter High School. Logan is ranked as the No. 24 ranked linebacker in the country and the No. 3 player from the state of Massachusetts. The Terps are also pursuing hometown five-star defensive tackle Eddie Goldman in the hopes to pull a coup, but as it stands, that looks unlikely. They remain in the mix for top wide receiver recruit Stefon Diggs, who will not announce on signing day.

Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) wide receiver Stefon Diggs has decided to visit the Maryland Terrapins just a day before National Signing Day, though he does not plan to make his announcement Wednesday.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound standout is the nation's No. 14 recruit according to MaxPreps and the No. 3 athlete on the board as well. He is ranked No. 8 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com, who gave him five stars.
Diggs will most likely announce his decision on Feb.10. He has made official visits to California, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State and has received over 30 offers from various schools. He had 36 catches for 808 yards and scored 13 touchdowns this season.

Before he flamed out at New Mexico,Mike Locksley was known as one of the best college football recruiters in the nation and that's a big reason he was re-hired by the Maryland Terrapins this season.
And while he's only been on the job for a few weeks, Locksley is already paying dividends in that field.
Indeed, Locksley has made an immediate impact by taking the lead in the recruitment of tailback Wes Brown from Good Counsel in Olney, Md. Brown, a consensus four-star prospect, committed to Maryland while playing in the Under Armour All-American Bowl on Jan. 5 and is considered the prized catch of Edsall's first full recruiting class.
Locksley kept his Maryland/D.C. ties even when he was in New Mexico, where he had multiple players from the Maryland-D.C. area on the roster. One of them, safety Zach Dancel, announced earlier this month that he is transferring to Maryland.

The biggest, somewhat realistic target that the Marland Terrapins have on their list still is Good Counsel wide receiver Stefon Diggs. But those hoping for a conclusion to his recruiting will have to wait a little while past Signing Day, as Diggs will not make his announcement on Wednesday, according to Jim Halley of USA Today.
Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) football coach Bob Milloy said that wide receiver Stefon Diggs is unlikely to sign on Wednesday, the first day of the national letter of intent period for football. . .
"I think he is a little confused right now," Milloy said. "He's got a little bit of a decision to make. He just got back from a visit to Ohio State."
While this is somewhat of a disappointment, this is not totally uncommon. Wednesday is the first day that recruits can send in their letters of intent, not the deadline for them to pick their next school. So while Maryland remains in the hunt for Diggs, it could be a little while before we know what his intentions are.
For more on the Terps, visit Testudo Times.
With the 2012 National Signing Day approaching, Maryland football may be pushing back into the lead for three-star offensive lineman D.J. Reader. Reader was seemingly a given to be landed by Clemson, but a report by Mike Farrell of Rivals suggests that the Terps are making a late push.
Was just texted by a good source that says DJ Reader could select #Maryland over #Clemson now.
— Mike Farrell (@rivalsmike) January 30, 2012
Reader, a 6'3'', 306-pound lineman from North Carolina, is currently ranked No. 19 among offensive lineman recruits and No. 20 in the state of North Carolina. He would bolster a Terps' recruiting class that has jumped up several notches since Mike Locksley was hired.
For more on recruiting and all things Maryland athletics, please head over to the aforementioned Testudo Times. Please check out the SB Nation College Football hub for more on all the big commitments as Signing Day approaches.
National Signing Day is just two days away, and the landscape of College Football could potentially change drastically in that time. Maryland is still being mentioned, perhaps optimistically, with some of the biggest recruits in the Country, so the buildup in the next two days should be well worth following.
Our Maryland football blog Testudo Times has a nice little rundown of the commitments Maryland has already secured at the skill positions, and what they should still be looking for. It's a primer for signing day, considering the biggest realistic target (and I say that with some uncertainty) is a wide receiver. Here is more on Stefon Diggs.
Yes, Stefon Diggs is still out there. He's not deciding for another ten days, though - a week after signing day - and still has visits to Ohio State and Maryland on the radar. Seeing as he's down to four you'd think Maryland has a fighting chance, especially if Mrs. Diggs has much sway, as she supposedly is a big Randy Edsall fan.
There are two other big local recruits in the area in Eddie Goldman and Ronald Darby, but it doesn't seem like the Terps have a shot at either of those two players.
For more on recruiting and all things Maryland athletics, please head over to the aforementioned Testudo Times. Please check out the SB Nation College Football hub for more on all the big commitments as Signing Day approaches.
Maryland Football Recruiting: Devin Butler Picks Notre Dame
Maryland head coach Randy Edsall has generally had good luck in keeping local recruits close to home. But he lost out on a good local prospect when Gonzaga defensive back Devin Butler announced on Twitter that he had committed to Notre Dame.
And the folks at SB Nation's Notre Dame blog, One Foot Down, are happy to have him if this report is any guide.
