Danny O'Brien Transfer: Maryland Will Pursue Tampering Charges Against Vanderbilt

As of Tuesday morning the Maryland football program has removed the ban it placed on Danny O'Brien and others from transferring to Vanderbilt. But that does not mean that they are done pursuing their claims that Vanderbilt and head coach James Franklin might have tampered with O'Brien while he was still here. According to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun, Maryland is still looking into those charges with help from the ACC and the SEC.

Maryland has believed strongly that O’'Brien had been in contact with former Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin, now Vanderbilt's coach. Under NCAA rules, a school can limit a rival program from having contact with a player. . .Maryland is pursuing the matter of possible tampering through the schools’ respective conferences.

The problem with this is that it is an almost impossible thing to claim. Franklin has admitted to having contact with his former player, but there really is no way to prove that what they did or did not talk about. But if Franklin talked to O'Brien about his time at Maryland and Danny said that he wasn't happy there, it would be hard to believe that Franklin wouldn't have mentioned coming to play for the Commodores.

The question is why Maryland didn't just do this in the first place, allowing O'Brien to transfer wherever he chooses continent on an investigation of tampering, but that's a question for another time.
