In addition to the Gators, the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder had narrowed his list to the Georgia Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, Southern Cal Trojans and Wisconsin Badgers, where his former teammate, quarterback Danny O'Brien, recently transferred. It was rumored Georgia was the early front-runner for Garcia, as the lineman is from the Peach State.

Former Maryland Terrapins offensive lineman Max Garcia was granted permission to transfer from the school earlier this spring to be closer to home, and it appears the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder will have a decision soon after wrapping up visits to five schools: Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, Southern Cal and, this weekend, Wisconsin. Via Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
Max Garcia, one of the nation's most heavily-recruited football transfers, told the AJC that this weekend's visit to Wisconsin and he'll announce his college choice within the next couple of weeks.
"It will be before May," Garcia said.
Terrapins fans may be suffering from deja vu, as it wasn't too long ago former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien transferred to, you guessed it, Wisconsin. Could a reunion of lineman and quarterback be in the works?

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien will transfer to the University of Wisconsin. O'Brien picked the Badgers over Penn State and Ole Miss. The news was first reported by Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel Badgers Blog and later confirmed by the university in a statement.
O'Brien seemed to have been blown away by his visit to the Wisconsin campus and really connected with Badgers head coach Bert Bielema and new offensive coordinator Matt Canada. A transfer like this helps the Badgers as they currently only have two healthy quarterbacks on their roster during spring practice.
Because O'Brien is on track to graduate early from the University of Maryland, he will be eligible to play right away for the Badgers and has two years of eligibility remaining. This is not the first time Wisconsin has benefited from this rule, last year quarterback Russell Wilson transferred to the Badgers and played right away, leading the Badgers to a Big 10 championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien visited Penn State for the second time on Monday. According to Ron Musselman of StateCollege.com, O'Brien watched the Nittany Lions practice on Monday.
Earlier in March, Penn State confirmed that it was one of the schools on O'Brien's radar after he was granted his release from Maryland. O'Brien also visited Mississippi State, and had other schools interested.
O'Brien would compete in spring practices with Matthew McGloin, Rob Bolden and Paul Jones for the team's quarterbacking job.
Last season, O'Brien threw for seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Terrapins, piling up 1,648 passing yards in the process. He was granted his release from the Maryland program after wrapping up his undergraduate program there. According to NCAA rules, he is free to transfer to any school with a graduate program while using up his remaining eligibility.
Ben Jones of StateCollege.com tweeted this picture of O'Brien at the Penn State facilities.

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is still looking to see where he will transfer to play next season. He has found another option in possibly playing for the Ole Miss Runnin' Rebels. Both him and former offensive lineman Max Garcia will be visiting Oxford, MIss. Tuesday according to CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman.

The Rebels have been hoping to find a quarterback that will help them compete in the brutal SEC and O'Brien could be that quarterback the Rebels need. Garcia would also go a long way in helping sure up their offensive line. O'Brien is still garnering interest from the Vanderbilt Commodores, Penn St. Nittany Lions and Connecticut Huskies as possible locations for his transfer.

While a decision by former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien has not yet been done, an article by Dustin Hockensmith of The Patriot-News in Pennsylvania states that the Penn State Nittany Lions could be a possible destination for the quarterback.
Part of the reason why O'Brien could go do Penn State is that first, the Nittany Lions run a pro-style offense that O'Brien could run well. Second, new Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien is a former protege of former Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen so his style could fit well with Bill O'Brien. Third is that the time Bill O'Brien spent mentoring Tom Brady as an assistant of the New England Patriots.
The Vanderbilt Commodores, Wisconsin Badgers and the Connecticut Huskies all have expressed interest in O'Brien as well.

For a while now Vanderbilt has been considered the favorite for Danny O'Brien to continue his career after transferring from the University of Maryland. But the pending investigation against James Franklin and the University might give him some pause, and all we really know is that he wants to go to a Power Conference. Enter Oklahoma State, the topic of some new rumors. SB Nation has the source of the rumors, and why they may make sense.
It's a fine pairing to consider, as OSU has to replace veteran starter Brandon Weeden, and O'Brien fared much better in the less-conservative Maryland offense of his freshman year. O'Brien could play right away too, so long as he enrolled in a graduate program that Maryland doesn't have.
After watching O'Brien flounder in the Gary Crowton offense it would be fun to watch him play in a system that allows him to throw the ball all over the field. On the other hand, he could put up big numbers and that would look pretty bad for the Terps who benched him last season.

Now that Danny O'Brien has been granted his full release from the University of Maryland, the focus in this story turns to the complaints of tampering that Randy Edsall and Maryland football have filed with the SEC and ACC against Vanderbilt University and James Franklin. Vanderbilt has acknowledged those accusations, and released this statement, via The City Paper of Nashville.
"We have been informed by the Southeastern Conference that the Atlantic Coast Conference has filed a formal complaint involving Vanderbilt University football on behalf of one of its members," Williams said in a brief statement issued by the university on Wednesday. "We are complying with SEC and Vanderbilt procedures and are conducting an investigation on the matter."
My guess is that it takes a little while for the respective conferences to figure out how they are going to go about these investigations and then to ultimately complete them.

It appears that Maryland has officially filed a tampering charge against Vanderbilt University in the ongoing Danny O'Brien transfer saga.
This statement on Vanderbilt's athletic website from the university's Vice Chancellor David Williams was released Wednesday afternoon.
"We have been informed by the Southeastern Conference that the Atlantic Coast Conference has filed a formal complaint involving Vanderbilt University football on behalf of one of its members. We are complying with SEC and Vanderbilt procedures and are conducting an investigation on the matter."
Since we don't know of any other ACC programs that have beef with Vanderbilt at the present time, we can assume that the unnamed member is Maryland.
Jeff Barker of The Baltimore Sun, who's done yeoman's work in this regard, sums up Maryland's case succinctly.
Maryland has believed strongly that O’'Brien had been in contact with former Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin, now Vanderbilt's coach. Under NCAA rules, a school can limit a rival program from having contact with a player without permission ...
A rival school can't encourage a player to transfer without permission. And it can't provide athletics aid in the first academic year if the player transfers without that consent.
Franklin has said he keeps relationships with former players but has maintained there was no tampering.
And on and on we go.

With the recent news that Maryland head coach Randy Edsall has granted quarterback Danny O'Brien, lineman Max Garcia and linebacker Mario Rowson their unconditional release, the question now is whether or not they will transfer to Vanderbilt. Right now it appears unlikely that O'Brien will even schedule an official visit, at least at this early stage, according to Washington Post Terrapins insider Eric Prisbell.
Part of the reason that O'Brien is hesitant to schedule anything with Vanderbilt is because of a formal complaint, filed by Maryland to the ACC and forwarded to the SEC that alleges improper contact with transferring players.
Given the swirling allegations that remain, O'Brien is unlikely, at least at this point, to visit Vanderbilt. He does not want to subject Commodores Coach James Franklin, whom he greatly respects, to any further scrutiny, and he also has no shortage of other options.
O'Brien right now is expected to make three official visits this weekend, though its not known yet where they are going to be.

Coach Randy Edsall removed the restrictions preventing Danny O'Brien among others from transferring to Vanderbilt on Wednesday, and both sides commented on the decision. According to Eric Prisbell of the Washington Post, Edsall is ready to put this whole station behind himself and the program.
"As a program we are looking forward to putting this distraction behind us and to moving forward. Spring practice opens on March 10 and we can’t wait to get back out on the field."
Unfortunately we won't be able to move on and put this situation behind us because Maryland has filed a complaint with the ACC and SEC about possible tampering by Vanderbilt, but we'll do the best we can to forget about it until that situation plays itself out. O'Brien had this to say.
"I am pleased to be able to move on and pursue a graduate degree and continue my athletic career at the school of my choosing." O’Brien said in a statement. "I would like to thank Coach Edsall for his support throughout this process."
We still don't know if O'Brien intends to transfer to Vanderbilt, but considering the fact that his family was ready to appeal Edsall's decision, it seems like that will in fact be the case.

As of Tuesday morning the Maryland football program has removed the ban it placed on Danny O'Brien and others from transferring to Vanderbilt. But that does not mean that they are done pursuing their claims that Vanderbilt and head coach James Franklin might have tampered with O'Brien while he was still here. According to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun, Maryland is still looking into those charges with help from the ACC and the SEC.
Maryland has believed strongly that O’'Brien had been in contact with former Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin, now Vanderbilt's coach. Under NCAA rules, a school can limit a rival program from having contact with a player. . .Maryland is pursuing the matter of possible tampering through the schools’ respective conferences.
The problem with this is that it is an almost impossible thing to claim. Franklin has admitted to having contact with his former player, but there really is no way to prove that what they did or did not talk about. But if Franklin talked to O'Brien about his time at Maryland and Danny said that he wasn't happy there, it would be hard to believe that Franklin wouldn't have mentioned coming to play for the Commodores.
The question is why Maryland didn't just do this in the first place, allowing O'Brien to transfer wherever he chooses continent on an investigation of tampering, but that's a question for another time.

After much discussion in the National media, the Maryland Terrapins have elected to remove the restriction banning Danny O'Brien, among others, from transferring to Vanderbilt to play under James Franklin, according to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun.
Maryland is lifting restrictions and telling departing quarterback Danny O'Brien, offensive lineman Max Garcia and linebacker Mario Rowson that they are free after all to transfer to Vanderbilt if they wish, according to a source. Terps coach Randy Edsall is meeting with the players this morning and informing them of the decision.
Coach Randy Edsall and the rest of the program had elected to block Danny O'Brien, Mario Rowson and Max Garcia from transferring to Vanderbilt because they felt that Franklin might have been tampering with the players in question. But it seems like they have backed off of that action once they've seen how much negative attention it has gotten.

It is important to note that nobody has ever come right out and said they believe that James Franklin was tampering with Danny O'Brien while he was a Terrapin in an effort to get him to Vanderbilt, but based on the comments Randy Edsall made in his latest interview, the damage has been done. Franklin responded to those accusations, or more accurately the hints at accusations, during a recent radio appearance.
"But the fact that people would make accusations that we tampered or did this or did that, again, I'm just going to defend our program and defend our character and how we do things. But I think it's ridiculous to think that I'm not going to have relationships with these kids after I leave places."
I can understand why Franklin feels that way, but it must be hard for Randy Edsall to think otherwise when Franklin admits to contact with his former player and then that player hopes to transfer to that school. I'm not sure we will ever know exactly what happened with Franklin and Danny O'Brien, but it looks like there might be a nice little rivalry developing between Franklin and his former employer.

In a blog post by CBSsports.com college football writer Bruce Feldman. The family of former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is planning on helping him appeal head coach Randy Edsall's block of a possible transfer to Vanderbilt.
A pro-style QB who still has two years of eligibility remaining would intrigue a lot of programs, but O'Brien's even a hotter commodity because he's on schedule to graduate with a Business degree in the spring and would be eligible as a graduate transfer this fall. Much like former N.C, State QB Russell Wilson was for Wisconsin this past year. However, unlike many of these recent graduate transfer cases, O'Brien has two years remaining, not just one. Even the SEC's new rule restricting graduate transfers would be open to O'Brien because he has two years of eligibility remaining, not just one season. And that twist has only spiced things up even more here.
....
On Thursday morning, O'Brien's high school coach Todd Willert, who says he speaks to the QB almost every day, expects the family will make such an appeal in order to have the option to transfer to Vandy.
"I believe they will," said Willert. "This weekend, Danny and his family will sort through everything. They think (Vandy) should be an option but I don't know exactly what they'll decide. It should be an option for him. Just be fair to everybody. Danny has no ill will towards anybody."

There continues to be fallout over Danny O'Brien transferring away from the University of Maryland. We have two new tidbits of information to pass along. The first is from Eric Prisbell of the Washington Post who has an interesting note from Randy Edsall about his thoughts on O'Brien transferring.
According to someone who spoke with O’Brien, Edsall told O’Brien, "Danny, if you decide to do this, with all you have accomplished here, I think you are making a mistake. Really think this through."
Ina bit of a surprising move, Coach Edsall sat down with CSN's Chick Hernandez for an interview about the recent headlines for Maryland football. They start talking about Stefon Diggs and his recent commitment, but it doesn't take long for Chick to ask about Danny O'Brien. Transcription is below.
Here is what Randy had to say about Danny O'Brien, and whether he as a victim of the change in offensive philosophies:
Well, I don't know. That would be a question for Danny to answer. I just know that Danny is a great young man. I like Danny as a person, I liked him as a student and I liked him as a player.
On O'Brien being barred from transferring to Vanderbilt:
We had stipulations in there, the same schools for all three of them (Max Garcia and Mario Rowson). So neither of the three were treated any differently than the other guys. Again, I'm not going to get into the names, the schools of what we put on there because as we talked to the players we said that was a situation where we would keep that amongst ourselves. But usually what will end up happening is there will be schools on there that you might compete against or if there's things that you feel might have taken place that you might put schools on that list. We have that prerogative to put schools on that list, the players have the prerogative that if they want to appeal that, they can appeal that as well.
Edsall seems to be getting at the rumors that there are some issues with the current coaching staff and former assistant coach James Franklin. There are also rumors that Franklin might have tampered with O'Brien while he was still a Terp.

According to a report by Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, former Maryland offensive lineman Max Garcia is interested in resuming his college football career with the Georgia Bulldogs. The Florida Gators also reportedly have interest in the 290-pound lineman, who will have two years of eligibility left after sitting out the 2012 season.
Carvell relayed the following comments from Garcia: I'm definitely excited about Georgia being interested in me, and my mother is really happy about it as well. I've always considered Georgia since high school. It just never really worked out the first time around. They liked me out of high school. They just wanted me to go to a summer camp, and I was never able to make it up there.
I'd definitely consider committing. Being so close to home, it would be a great opportunity for me. I'm also going to open it up to other interested schools. I want to try to find the best situation for me - as far as being close to home, with what I want to study and how much offensive line depth there is.
Garcia hopes that a fresh start will help his football career in the near future.

From Washington Post Terrapins insider Eric Prisbell, now-former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien released a statement regarding his decision to leave the Maryland program.
After careful thought, contemplation, prayer, and consultation with my family, we have come to a consensus that it is in my best interest to continue my educational and athletic endeavors elsewhere.
This was a very difficult decision, one which I did not take lightly. I will forever cherish the friendships of teammates, academic and athletic support staff, fellow students, professors, and of course Terp fans.
Playing at Byrd Stadium and experiencing college life in College Park will remain as unforgettable experiences for the rest of my life. I certainly wish nothing but the best to the team next season and for years to come.
I look forward to completing one of my established goals of graduating from the University of Maryland this spring and becoming a proud alumnus of this great institution.
Danny O'Brien
It is good to see that O'Brien is committed to finishing his academic obligations at Maryland before he goes to play anywhere else. He sounds like he thought about this decision for a long time and just thought that his fledgling football career would be better served elsewhere.

More: Edsall - 'O'Brien not committed to our program, not all in.'
According to Eric Prisbell of the Washington Post, Danny O'Brien will not be permitted to transfer to Vanderbilt if that is his choice.
Maryland Coach Randy Edsall would not release Danny O'Brien to transfer to Vanderbilt, according to individual familiar with the talks.
Part of the reason why Edsall could be blocking this potential move is because James Franklin, the head coach at Vanderbilt, was the offensive coordinator at Maryland before Edsall took over last year.
The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Barker also tweeted from his account.
Maryland source says Danny O'Brien was not cleared to transfer to Vanderbilt, although he was given general release
Even though cases like this are not entirely uncommon in college football, this decision reflects very poorly on Edsall when he has had a year where everything went awry. He could certainly use some good PR given the fact that local media was grilling him recently but this doesn't seem to help.

With the news that Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is leaving the Terrapin program, the immediate question is where is he going to go? Already we have early indications of where O'Brien may play his next football. Jeff Barker, Maryland basketball and football writer for The Baltimore Sun, tweeted:

Its an interesting move for the former ACC Rookie of the Year. As of now, it is not known if any of the schools that O'Brien is interested in has any interest in bringing on the now former Terrapin.
This, despite the blockbuster signing of Good Counsel WR Stefon Diggs, adds to an offseason that has seen a dozen Maryland players transfer since season's end.

The rumors starting emerging last week that Danny O'Brien was unhappy at Maryland and was considering transferring, but on Monday it was confirmed by the University that O'Brien will in fact leave the team and will seek to transfer to a new School.
"I’m disappointed by Danny’s decision," Randy Edsall said in a press release sent out to reporters on Monday, "Danny told me that he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’"
The school also confirmed that offensive tackle Max Garcia and linebacker Mario Rowson are leaving the program
"Max is still homesick," Edsall said of Garcia "He wants to transfer to a school closer to home so his family can see him play." Gracia is a native of Norcross, Ga.
Regarding Rowson, Edsall said "Mario wants to play defensive back. Trouble is, we see Mario as a linebacker."
O'Brien had a very difficult year on the field for the Terps, his lack of production led Randy Edsall and the team to bench him midway through the year. When he did return to the lineup his season ended with a broken arm against Notre Dame. It was widely speculated that O'Brien would transfer after the Season, but when he chose to delay his decision for a few months it was considered a sign that he may elect to stay. That turns out not to be the case.
His departure leaves little depth on the roster at quarterback behind C.J. Brown, who will now be the presumptive starter for next year. It also means that Mike Locksley might have to adjust the offense he was planning on running to accommodate a more mobile quarterback.

The waiting game on the transfer status of Maryland Terrapins quarterback Danny O'Brien continues, and a blog post from the Baltimore Sun suggest fans shouldn't expect a decision to come anytime in the very near future.
I'm told to expect some news by early next week," wrote Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun.
On Wednesday, it was reported that O'Brien was meeting with Maryland head coach Randy Edsall to discuss him leaving College Park. However, a tweet from O'Brien just an hour after the news broke refuted the claims of a transfer, but an individual with knowledge of situation said that O'Brien was going to take the weekend to discuss all options with his family.
O'Brien, a redshirt sophomore, is eligible to graduate this spring, which would enable him to transfer to another FBS school without sitting out a year. However, it is not clear whether O'Brien will actually graduate early.

It was first reported on Wednesday afternoon that Maryland Terrapins quarterback Danny O'Brien had met with Terps head coach Randy Edsall to inform Edsall of his intent to transfer from the football program. O'Brien denied this report with on his official Twitter account less than an hour after the initial report surfaced. Eric Prisbell of the Washington Post is now reporting that O'Brien is still seriously considering a transfer and will spend the weekend with his family before coming to a decision.
According to one individual with knowledge of the situation, O'Brien will spend the weekend deciding with his family whether to leave Maryland. If he departs, O'Brien would be the 11th player with eligibility remaining to leave the program for various reasons since Edsall's first season - a disastrous 2-10 campaign - ended in November. In total, O'Brien would be the 23rd player with eligibility remaining to have left the program since Edsall was hired in January 2011.

Initially it was reported that Maryland Terrapins quarterback Danny O'Brien had met with Terps head coach Randy Edsall and would be transferring from Maryland. As Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast my friend!" According to O'Brien's twitter account, he's still a Terp.

Dan Hellie of NBC 4 originally reported the news of O'Brien's decision to transfer, making him the ninth Terp to do so since Randy Edsall took over as head coach of the football program. It's possible that O'Brien may have just spoken with Edsall with thoughts of transferring or that he did inform the coach of his intent to transfer, but had a change of heart after the news broke. With young players, their minds can change on a whim. Then again it's possible his transfer hasn't been finalized or was denied by the school.
