There were two games in the 2012 NCAA Women's Tournament on Monday night that featured the top two teams in each region playing for a spot in the Final Four. The tournament has been chalk pretty much the whole way through, and that continued on Monday.
The first game of the night featured Pat Summit and Tennessee against the No. 1 seeded and overwhelming favorite Baylor Bears. If there was going to be an upset in this round, it probably would have come from this game. But the Bears were hardly even slowed down at all in a 77-58 victory.
Next up was No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 Duke, and as was expected, Stanford walked away with a victory. The Cardinal leaned heavily on their star Nneka Ogwumike, who had 29 points and 17 rebounds, in their 81-69 victory.

The University of Maryland might have played the most compelling game on Sunday, but they weren't the only team to advance to the Elite 8. There were three other games played on Sunday, including one that will deliver Maryland's opponent in the next round.
That game was No. 1 seed Notre Dame and No. 5 seed St. Bonaventure, and it wasn't really much of a game at all. The Irish outscored the Bonnies 35-13 in the first half, and it got worse from there. The final score was a pretty alarming 79-35, a margin you don't normally see this late in the tournament. Could be trouble for the Terps in the next round.
The University of Connecticut faced a Penn State squad that had a pretty fair amount of trouble putting the ball in the basket. They shot just 36.1% on their way to a 77-59 loss. The Huskies will face. . .
No. 2 seed Kentucky who bounced No. 11 seed Gonzaga, the highest seed to play on Sunday. The final score, 79-62, was indicative of the seed disparity.
All four regional final match ups feature the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.

The Maryland Terrapins found out who they will meet in the Elite 8 on Tuesday, as No. 1 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish dismantled the No. 5 seed St. Bonaventure Bonnies 79-35 Sunday afternoon.
The Bonnies were held to a ridiculously low 18.8 percent shooting percentage for the game by the Irish. Cece Dixon was able to score 13 points, however it was not nearly enough to get a win.
The Irish held big advantages in every statistical category imaginable, including a 40-12 advantage in points in the paint, and a 16-0 edge in fast break points.
Natalie Novosel of Notre Dame led all scorers with 16 points. The Irish will play the Maryland Terrapins in the regional final Tuesday at 9 p.m.

The Maryland Lady Terrapins have punched their ticket to the Elite Eight with an impressive 81-74 come-from-behind win against the Texas A&M Aggies Sunday afternoon. The Terps used a 21-4 run to end the game to propel themselves to the victory.
After a slow start, the Terps put together an impressive second half, led by Alyssa Thomas and Lauin Mancy each had a game-high 21 points while Mancy was able to pull down 12 rebounds while shooting 7-for-8 from the floor. Maryland took the lead for good on a Lynetta Kizer layup that made the score 75-74 with 3:29 to play.
The hot shooting seen from the Aggies in the first half was nowhere to be found in the second half, and their lack of an inside game doomed them. Alexia Standish had a team-high 19 points to lead the five Aggies that reached double figures scoring.
Maryland will take on the winner of the Notre Dame-St. Bonaventure game later on Sunday.

The Maryland Terrapins have weathered an early storm to remain within striking distance of the Texas A&M Aggies although they still trail 44-41 at halftime.
Texas A&M stormed out the gate with a 12-2 run to start the game. The Aggies are shooting 51.4 percent from the field and a ridiculous 71.4 percent from behind the arc. Maryland fought back, going on a 13-4 run to end the half. The Terps have been able to get back in the game using their size on the glass, as they hold a 20-9 rebounding advantage.
Alyssa Thomas leads the Terrapins with 13 points and 4 rebounds. Tianna Hawkins has also been impressive, adding 12 points while shooting 4-of-6 from the floor.
For the Aggies, Alexia Standish has a team-high 12 points while Skylar Collins has added 10 points while shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.

The Maryland Terrpains eked out a four-point win over Louisville on Monday night to advance to the Sweet 16 in Raleigh, where they will face the Texas A&M Aggies. The defending national champs edged out the Arkansas Razorbacks at home in a 61-59 barnburner. The Aggies committed 17 turnovers to keep the No. 6 seed in it down the stretch. Arkansas took a lead in the final minute before Sydney Carter hit two free-throws to give A&M a one-point lead with just 24 seconds remaining.
Adaora Elonu was dominant inside, scoring 23 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Elonu will present a challenge for Tianna Hawkins and company in the paint. No other Aggies player was in double figures, however, as they were very sloppy on the offensive end. Both Maryland and Texas A&M were challenged on their home court tonight, as Louisville and Arkansas took it down to the wire. The Terps, however, will look to make it 10 wins in a row in Raleigh this weekend and get past the Aggies and into the Elite 8.

The No. 2 seed Maryland women's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament on Monday night with a 72-68 win over the No. 7 seed Louisville Cardinals. The Cards kept it close for the full 40 minutes on the Terps' home court but Maryland finished the game on a 13-4 run over the final five minutes to close it out. The Terps trailed by as many nine at the Comcast Center. With the Cardinals down three with the ball and 15 seconds remaining, they went for the tie but the Terps defended it perfectly at the arc and forced a heave that was well short and never drew iron.
Laurin Mincy picked up right where she left off after a brilliant first half and finished with a team-high 24 points. Mincy was fantastic all evening, adding seven boards and scoring her 24 points on just 10 attempts from the floor. She got consistent penetration and hit 10 of 13 free-throws. On the interior, Tianna Hawkins put in an impressive double-double effort with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Brenda Freese's club now heads to Raleigh where they will face the winner of tonight's Texas A&M and Arkansas game.
