Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson is leaving to take the same job at Stanford, according to reports.

University of Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson is leaving after two years on the job. Anderson, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, is taking over as the athletic director at Stanford University, as soon as the two sides can agree on a salary.

The Chronicle report was corroborated by Chick Hernandez of CSN Washington, a Maryland graduate.

Anderson has ties to Stanford, having been the director of annual giving from 1993-1995. He signed a five-year deal in 2010 to take over at Maryland, after leaving the AD job at West Point. His tenure at Maryland has been a difficult one, marked by serious budget issues, including a deficit that could reach $17 million by 2017. He has already cut several smaller programs.

Maryland football fans failed to warm to Anderson after the decision to hire Randy Edsall as the head football coach. Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was a more popular candidate who interviewed for that job, but reports after the fact revealed that Anderson and others at Maryland were turned off by Leach.

Anderson also hired a new men's basketball coach in 2010-2011, Mark Turgeon. The team has not made a tournament appearance in Anderson's two years as AD.
