University of Maryland freshman Sam Cassell Jr. was ruled ineligible by the NCAA and will not be playing with the Terrapins this season.
University of Maryland freshman Sam Cassell Jr. was ruled ineligible by the NCAA according to InsideMDSports. Cassell, the son of former NBA player and Washington Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell, was expected to immediately compete for playing time in the Maryland backcourt.
The issue stems from Cassell's "initial eligibility" to become a student-athlete at Maryland. It is unclear if the academic eligibility issue deals with Cassell's coursework at Notre Dame Prep, where he was a post-graduate student last season, or from one of his previous high schools in Baltimore, Towson Catholic and St. Frances Academy.
Cassell had already been admitted to the University of Maryland, but multiple prep coaches have said that he is unlikely to be allowed to play for the Terrapins this season. If Cassell wishes to stay at Maryland he may have to attend junior college before becoming eligible. He is also exploring the options of transferring to another school.
