2012 Preakness Stakes Sets Attendance Mark

I'll Have Another continued his quest for horse racing's Triple Crown with a thrilling victory at Pimlico on Saturday, in what officials said was a record crowd. Via the Baltimore Sun:

Horse racing officials said the record crowd demonstrated the success of changes made in recent years to stem flagging interest in the sport: instituting an all-you-can-drink deal, stepping up entertainment options and using slot machine gambling revenue to improve race tracks. The record crowd of 121,300 came in the fourth year of a new twist on Preakness, an end to a bring-your-own-beer infield policy that garnered a less than flattering reputation.

The 121,300 in the crowd bested the previous record, from 2007, by 100 fans. The handle was $80,463,005, which is the sixth-largest betting pool in Preakness Stakes history.

Triple Crown 2012: With Win At Belmont Stakes, I'll Have Another Would Become 12th Triple Crown Winner

I'll Have Another and 25-year-old jockey Mario Gutierrez are one win away from capturing the first Triple Crown in 34 years after once again chasing down Bodemeister and winning the 2012 Preakness Stakes.

The jockey and horse have now captured the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and stand a win at the 2012 Belmont Stakes away from the greatest achievement in horse racing, the ever-elusive Triple Crown.

It has been 34 years since Affirmed swept the Derby, Preakness and Belmont to become the 11th horse to win the Triple Crown. Since that time, 11 horses have won both the Derby and Preakness with a chance for glory at Belmont and failed, most recently Big Brown in 2008 and Smarty Jones in 2004.

The 2012 Belmont Stakes will take place in three weeks, on June 9th at Belmont Park in New York.

Preakness Stakes 2012 Payouts: Favorites Finish Toward The Top

I'll Have Another wasn't the favorite to win Saturday's Preakness, but he was pretty close. The horse was facing 3-1 odds prior to the race, while Bodemeister was looking at 2-1, contributing to a bit smaller payouts following the second leg of the Triple Crown at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. A lot of the larger payouts, though, came following the superfecta, pegging the top four finishers correctly.

I'll Have Another had been trailing before passing Bodemeister over the final stretch.

2012 Preakness Winner: I'll Have Another Outruns Bodemeister

25 year old upstart jockey Mario Gutierrez is now just one win away from taking the vaunted and elusive Triple Crown.

The jockey and his horse, I'll Have Another, won last weekend's Kentucky Derby and took the 2012 Preakness Stakes this afternoon in Baltimore, defeating favorite Bodemeister.

Bodemeister started strong and had the lead for most of the race right out of the starting gates. But in the last 200 yards or so, I'll Have Another made his move to the outside and took the lead and the eventual win.

Both jockey and horse look to complete the elusive trifecta in three weeks at the Belmont Stakes.

The 2012 Preakness Stakes is almost upon us, with post time set for 6:18 p.m. ET on Saturday. The second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown is always a huge draw, and it looks like this year Pimlico Race Course may draw in more fans than ever before. Via Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun:
