2011 NHL All-Star Game Skills Competition: Alex Ovechkin Will Defend His Breakaway Title Tonight

Ahead of tomorrow's 2011 NHL All-Star Game, the two teams captained by Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom will face off in the SuperSkills competition tonight, and as fans of the Washington Capitals, we'll be rooting for Team Staal.

The competitors in each challenge won't be named until just before the start of the event at 8:00 PM, but we've got to think that Alex Ovechkin will be slated to defend his title as champion of the Breakaway Challenge. Its an individual competition that Ovechkin has won every time its been held (2008 and 2009). The winner is decided by fan voting, and this just may be why Ovechkin has earned the reputation for being a showboater.

But how will he top this?

Washington's other All-Star Mike Green will also get a chance to compete as one of the 18 members of Team Staal, but its a little less clear which challenge he'll participate in. If the NHL All-Star Game Skills competition held a challenge that included a vespa race or "who can rock the raddest mohawk," we're pretty sure Green would win in a landslide. But the defenseman might have to settle for the Hardest Shot competition or the Skills Challenge Relay.
