The fractured thumb suffered by Nicklas Backstrom during Monday night's 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins appears to be less serious than initially feared. The Capitals are listing Backstrom as day-to-day, which is less serious than it could have been.
Then again, "day-to-day" is common even with somewhat serious injuries. Luckily for the Capitals, though, it doesn't look like Backstrom will miss much time. Via Sky Kerstein of 106.7 The Fan:
I'm told #Caps Backstrom is day to day, he won't be out for a significant amount of time, if he misses any time
That's good news for a Capitals team that doesn't have much depth at center. Backstrom has struggled this season, but not having him for an extended period of time would be a major problem for the Capitals as they try to get their offense back in gear.
