Capitals Preseason: Ice Conditions At First Mariner Arena Lead To Slow-Paced Game

The Capitals were in Baltimore on Tuesday for a preseason game against the Nashville Predators, but the conditions of the ice they were playing on prevented the game from being a great representation of NHL Hockey for a City that doesn't have a team. According to Steve Whyno of the Washington Times, the 1st Mariner Arena, where the event was played, the building was simply too warm and the ice was not great to play on.

It was very warm. It was like Winter Classic game,”captain Alex Ovechkin. “You can see the ice was not that good and between the boards and ice there was lots of holes. But it is what it is. We just play over it.”

The slippery conditions and on-ice puddles led to a very slow game. Ovechkin even said that the possibility of getting injured a little bit more, particularly when he was heading to the boards where the conditions were especially bad. Luckily, no one got hurt as a result of the ice conditions, and the only real issue was that the people of Baltimore didn't get quite as good a game as they deserved.

Predators Vs. Capitals: Baltimore Anything But Charming As Caps Fall 2-0 To Predators

The Washington Capitals opened their 2011-12 preseason schedule Tuesday at the First Mariner Arena in Baltimore as part of the inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic. Unfortunately for the Caps, Charm City was anything but.

Chris Mueller and Colin Wilson scored for the Nashville Predators as they defeated the Caps 2-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 11,082.

Pekka Rinne and Jeremy Smith combined for the shutout, stopping all 29 Washington shots. Michal Neuvirth played all 60 minutes for the Caps and made 25 saves on 27 shots.

The Caps brought their stars to Baltimore to play in front of the red-clad crowd, but Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green did not give the fans anything to really cheer about. Part of the blame will likely fall on the poor ice conditions, as the humidity inside First Mariner Arena led to several stoppages in play to clean up puddles of water on the ice surface.

Luckily for the Caps, they will have little time to dwell on their first loss of the season. After practice Wednesday morning a Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the Caps will travel to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets at 7 p.m.
