The Washington Capitals have placed defensemen Mike Green on long-term injury reserve, according to a team spokesman. Green will be eligible to come back and play as early as February 1, which is eight games from now. During that time, the Capitals will be allowed to exceed the salary cap, so long as they get back under after Green returns. Green has a $5.25 million cap hit.
The team has recalled forward Cody Eakin from AHL Hershey to replace Green on the roster.
Green has been bothered by lingering knee, foot and head injuries all season, only playing in 10 games this year. He returned on January 3 against the Calgary Flames, but suffered another injury on January 7 against the San Jose Sharks and has not played since.
The Capitals have missed him desperately this year. The team has won all eight games in which Green has played more than 10 minutes.
