Byfuglien redirected an Evander Kane centering pass past Tomas Vokoun to put Winnipeg on top for good. The win moved the Jets to within two points of Washington for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Washington remained three points behind idle Florida in the Southeast Division with the loss.
The Capitals had tied the score at 2-2 on a power play goal by Mathieu Perreault just 27 seconds into the third period. Perreault's slapper from the slot got through a screen and past Ondrej Pavelec, who made 22 saves in the win. Vokoun made 28 saves and was unlucky to take the loss.
