The Washington Capitals played well for the entirety of the first period against the Philadelphia Flyers, but the only goal of the period came 25 seconds in. Alexander Ovechkin extended his goal streak in the opening seconds of the game, beating Ilya Bryzgalov for his 33rd goal of the season to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.
Bryzgalov was sharp after giving up that soft early goal, stopping 11 Capitals shots. Braden Holtby is making just his third start of the year for Washington and he's done well, stopping all 11 Flyers shots. Philadelphia also gave away a power play early in the period, but the Caps were unable to convert.
Turnovers have been a problem for Philly in the early going, and they will need to clean that up to avoid going down further. They have created plenty of shots, but they're lucky that they haven't conceded more than one on the other end.
