Semin's goal came with exactly four minutes to play in the period while Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was serving a two-minute roughing penalty. The Bruins were unable to clear the loose puck by their own defensive blue line and Semin eventually collected, turned, and shot from inside the center point. With the help of Brooks Laich's tremendous screen in front, the puck slipped through Thomas' legs and into the net.
The Bruins outshot the Capitals 8-7 in the first 40 minutes and were helped by a late power play, but Braden Holtby continued his solid play in net, most notably making a glove save to deny Milan Lucic on a 2-on-1 break.
