After three periods of play the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins were locked up at one goal a piece in the deciding Game 7 of the playoff series. The game had been physical with minimal scoring and excellent play by both goals, Tim Thomas and Braden Holtby, but the Capitals were able to get a shot past Thomas in overtime.
In just under three minutes in the overtime period, Joel Ward put the puck in the net for the game winning and series winning goal, assisted by Mike Knuble, to knock the Boston Bruins out of the 2012 NHL Playoffs. It was a relatively clean and physical game, but the Caps were able to pull out the victory.
