Rangers Vs. Capitals, 2012 NHL Playoffs Game 2: Braden Holtby Solid As Washington Holds On To 2-1 Lead

The Washington Capitals maintained their 2-1 lead through the second period, holding on to the advantage going into the second intermission of Game 2 against the Rangers. Both teams had several great scoring chances, but both Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby held on to keep the puck out of the back of the net. Each team put 18 shots on net in an evenly matched 20 minutes.

The Rangers started the period with the first great chance, as Mike Rupp ended up on an open breakaway. Rupp went to his backhand as he came across the ice, but Holtby slid right to left and caught the shot with his shoulder, pouncing on the rebound which fell right in front of him. It was a big save early in the period.

Washington had a couple golden chances as well, peppering Lundqvist. They came the closest to adding their third of the night on an Alex Ovechkin rocket which hit the post and went through the legs of the Rangers' netminder as he tried to smother it against the pipe. The puck came loose but Marc Staal jumped in to put his stick behind it before Lundqvist could fall on it. The ref immediately blew it dead, and the puck never visibly crossed the line. Stil, the story of the period was Holtby who looks to be re-gaining his confidence after a shakier Game 1. New York put consistent pressure on the Caps goalie, but he was up to the task, making a handful of impressive saves to keep his club in front.
