The Washington Capitals earned a very surprising series win against the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night. Joel Ward squeaked a backhand by Tim Thomas in overtime to seal what has been the closest series in Stanley Cup Playoff history. Our Capitals blog Japers' Rink is just happy that the Game 7 monkey is finally off this team's back.
Nothing is as exciting as seeing your team win a series in overtime. Nothing. And Joel Ward made sure that the Caps' and their fans finally ended their Game 7 miseries when he picked up a rebound after a two-on-one with Mike Knuble, and made it count. A wee bit of interference by Knuble on Tim Thomas? Perhaps. But it's about time the karmic pendulum swung the Caps' way in that department, and it paid off big time. Your playoff hero: Joel Ward.
Wednesday was also the last time Joel Ward will ever have to pay for a drink in Washington. The Capitals now move on, and their next round opponent is not yet determined. Bot for now, just enjoy the moment.

After three periods of play the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins were locked up at one goal a piece in the deciding Game 7 of the playoff series. The game had been physical with minimal scoring and excellent play by both goals, Tim Thomas and Braden Holtby, but the Capitals were able to get a shot past Thomas in overtime.
In just under three minutes in the overtime period, Joel Ward put the puck in the net for the game winning and series winning goal, assisted by Mike Knuble, to knock the Boston Bruins out of the 2012 NHL Playoffs. It was a relatively clean and physical game, but the Caps were able to pull out the victory.
The Caps next round opponent still hasn't been decided, but it will be one of either the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, or the New Jersey Devils.

Tyler Seguin's scrambled goal off a Braden Holtby goal has sent the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins into the locker room after 40 minutes of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals with the score tied, 1-1.
Seguin's goal came with 5:33 to go in the period after Holtby let a Johnny Boychuk slapshot slip under his arm. Seguin, who was stationed on the doorstep, dove past Karl Alzner, John Carlson, and Holtby to poke the puck into the net.
After two periods of play, the shots on goal are 25-13 in favor of the Bruins.

All told, the Capitals were outshot 10-4 by the Bruins in the first period.

Well, here we are. The Washington Capitals struggled to get into the Playoffs over the last month or so of the season, but now that they have gotten in, they have made things very difficult for their opponent and defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins. All six games so far in this series have been decided by one goal, and there have been no indications that Game 7 will be a departure from that. Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is one of the best phrases in all of sports, so tonight should be pretty fun.
Here is all the information you need to find the game tonight.
Game Date & Time: Wednesday, April 25th, 7:30 pm ET

The Washington Capitals came into Sunday's Game 6 against the Boston Bruins with a chance to wrap up their first round series and advance to the next round of the Playoffs. They lost 4-3 in overtime and now they must head back to Boston for Game 7 on Wednesday. Our Capitals blog Japers' Rink is already looking ahead to that game.
The Bruins are battle tested, at home, and will be confident. The Caps... have broken hearts time and again when it comes down to game 7 situations. Through this series the Caps have proven that they can certainly play with the Bruins, now they just need to go out there and prove it again. Hopefully they can also show he fans that playoff history doesn't matter.
It would have been nice for the Caps to win this game and not worry about a decisive game in hostile territory, but they are lucky that they have another opportunity to close out the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Nobody thought it would be easy, but the Capitals still have a chance, and that's really all that matters.

The Boston Bruins survived elimination with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Tyler Seguin's goal 3:17 sent the series back to Boston for a Game 7.
The loss was a frustrating one for the Capitals who dominated the Bruins for most of the game. Tim Thomas came up big yet again in net for Boston, stopping 36-of-39 shots. Washington also failed to cash in on any of the four power play chances they had in the game.
The Capitals fought back from 2-1 deficit in the first period, and a 3-2 deficit in the third only to come up short in the end. Braden Holtby stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced in net for the Capitals.
The two teams will meet in the decisive Game 7 on Wednesday.

Alex Ovechkin's clutch goal with 4:52 to play in the game erased a 3-2 deficit and sent Game 6 of their series with the Boston Bruins to overtime.
The Bruins were able to take a 3-2 lead with 8:03 left in the third period when Andrew Ference beat Braden Holtby with an assist from Tyler Seguin.
The Capitals would answer and force overtime when Alex Ovechkin put a shot past Tim Thomas with a little under five minutes remaining in regulation, tying the score at 3-3.
Going into overtime, the Capitals still hold the momentum, as they are outshooting the Bruins 38-28 and have forced 14 takeaways to Boston's seven.

The Washington Capitals have seized momentum in the second period in Game 6 against the Boston Bruins
Boston had a golden opportunity early in the period after Alex Ovechkin had a nasty high stick on Zedeno Chara, giving the Bruins a four-minute power play. The Bruins couldn't convert, allowing the Capitals to gain momentum.
The Capitals outshot the Bruins 15-5 in the period, but stellar play from Bruins goalie Tim Thomas has kept the Capitals from gaining an advantage. He has stopped 23-of-25 shots faced.
Washington finally got a breakthrough late in the period when Jason Chimera scored his first goal of the playoffs with just 42 seconds left in the period.

Boston was able to score first when Rich Peverly scored his third goal of the playoffs at the 5:56 mark of the first period.

The Bruins picked up a big goal when David Krejci scored a power play goal with 3:12 left in the period.
Boston has been the agressor in the first period, holding an 22-14 advantage in hits. The Bruins have also seen a majority of the scoring chances, outshooting the Capitals, 11-10.

Troy Brouwer's goal at 18:33 of the third period gave the Washington Capitals a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of their opening round Eastern Conference playoff series, with the Capitals now holding a 3-2 lead in the series. Game 6 will be played in Sunday evening in Washington, D.C.
Brouwer's wrist shot from the top of the circle got by Bruins netminder Tim Thomas, who uncharacteristically allowed four goals on 32 Washington shots.
Mike Knuble got the Capitals their first goal of the third period, skirting a shot past Thomas' stick to give Washington a 3-1 lead. It was Knuble's first goal of the playoffs and thirteenth playoff goal of his career. Joel Ward and John Erskine earned assists on the Knuble tally.
Braden Holtby was once again phenomenal in goal, highlighted by his splits save against Tyler Seguin of the Bruins. Holtby finished the game stopping 34 of the 37 shots he faced.
Johnny Boychuk tied the game for Boston 3-3 at the 8:47 mark of the third period. The goal was the first Bruins power play goal of the series.

In an opening round series that has been dominated by goaltending and defensive play, the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins flipped the script in the second period, with each team scoring two goals to send their Game 5 matchup to the third period tied 2-2.
Alexander Semin scored his third goal of the series with 8:44 left in the second period, assisted by Dennis Wideman and Marcus Johansson. Bruins defenseman Joe Corvo was injured on a hard shot, lost his stick, and in the subsequent scrmable in front of the net Semin was able to push the puck past Boston's Tim Thomas.
Jay Beagle added the Capitals second score just over three minutes later, extending the Washington lead to 2-0.
The Bruins battled back, though, with Dennis Seidenberg scoring at the 17:21 mark of the second period. Boston quickly got on the board twenty-eight seconds later, when Brad Marchand poked a loose puck through Braden Holtby's five hole to tie the contest 2-2.
The physicality of the series has continued throughout Game 5, as just over five minutes into the second period Washington's Troy Brouwer and Boston's Johnny Boychuk received matching minors for roughing as they got into along the boards, oddly enough in front of a giant stuffed bear.

The Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins continued their defensive ways in the first period of their critical Game 5 matchup at TD Garden, with the two teams playing to a scoreless tie in the first period on Saturday afternoon.
Washington gave Boston an early power play opportunity, as John Carlson was called for goaltender interference after running head-on into Boston goalie Tim Thomas.
The Bruins were unable to convert, however, and are now 0-15 in the series with the man advantage.
Braden Holtby and Tim Thomas were once again the stars in the first period, as they have been all series long, Holtby stopped all 10 shots he face in the first twenty minutes, with Thomas turning away all 11 Capitals attempts at the Boston net.

The Washington Capitals defended their home ice on Thursday night at the Verizon Center, beating the Boston Bruins 2-1 and evening the series at two games apiece. The scene shifts back to Boston this afternoon for a pivotal Game 5 that should give the winner a decided advantage in the series.
Washington's Alexander Semin scored the go-ahead power play goal in the win and Braden Holtby stopped 44 of Boston's shots to help secure the victory.
Boston will look to cut down on the penalties that gave Washington an advantage in Game 4, while also trying to penetrate the Caps defense that's given them so much trouble in this series. Boston scored just one goal in 45 shots on net. That's a problem the Bruins will have to correct rather quickly if they're going to win this series.
Game 5 starts at 3:00 p.m. EST on NBC. Stay tuned for further updates.

The Washington Capitals will have one of their usual goaltenders back for Game 5 against the Boston Bruins. Goaltender Michal Neuvirth practiced with the team Friday morning at the Kettler Ice Plex and will be in uniform and ready to go behind Braden Holtby in Boston on Saturday afternoon.
Washington Times Capitals writer Stephen Whyno confirmed this in a tweet on Friday.
Neuvirth says it's good to be back, confirming he should be ready to back up Holtby for #Caps in Game 5 Sat at #bruins

Holtby does have the hot goalie glove so there is no reason to pull him out of the starting position for Game 5. The good news about this is that the Capitals now have another goalie with playoff experience backing up Holtby should things not go well.

Goals are still at a premium in the series between the Capitals and the Bruins, but Washington managed to pull out a 2-1 win in Game 4 on Thursday to even the series as it now heads back to Boston for Game 5. The offense scored when it counted, but the big story from Game 4 was Braden Holtby, who has played well enough to win all four games this series. Our Capitals blog Japers' Rink continues to be impressed with the young netminder.
No one stole the show like Braden Holtby tonight. Aside from an odd-man rush (see above), Holts was tracking the puck like the best of 'em, and allowed precious few rebounds or advantageous re-directions. Caps fans watching most all of his professional games knew he had this ability, but to see the consistency through four games is absolutely stunning.
It would be one thing for Holtby to just be playing this well, but he is doing it across the ice from Tim Thomas, one of the best goalies in the NHL. It makes his performance even more impressive.

Washington was physical, they were better in the face-off circle, they took advantage of enough of their opportunities when they came, and they defended with a tenacity rarely seen outside of Italian soccer.

The Washington Capitals evened their best-of-seven first round series with the Boston Bruins on Thursday night with a 2-1 win at Verizon Center. Braden Holtby, the Capitals rookie goaltender who's been the MVP for Dale Hunter's club through the first four games, came up huge again and made 44 saves to even it up at 2-2. The Bruins dominated the first half of the game and peppered him all night, out-shooting the Caps 45-21, but he withstood the assault and only allowed a first-period goal to Rich Peverley on a 3-on-1 breakaway.
With just over nine seconds remaining, the Bruins put intense pressure on Holtby, putting multiple shots in front on the Caps' netminder. Patrice Bergeron had a shot to tie it up with a second remaining, but Holtby made a beautiful glove save. The shot, however, never should have counted because the clock operator did not start the clock right at the face-off, with it stuck on 9.5 for almost four full seconds. Thankfully, Holtby made the save to prevent what would have been a monumental controversy. Video of the clock error on the final sequence of the game:
Holtby's work ensured that Alexander Semin's beautiful second-period rocket stood up as the game-winning goal. The series now moves back to Boston for Game 5 on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden. The Caps will look to ride their hot goaltender and take their first lead in the series.

Alexander Semin scored on the power play with 1:17 left in the second period to give the Washington Capitals a 2-1 lead over the Boston Bruins after two periods of play in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
With Patrice Bergeron in the penalty box for hooking, Semin took a pass from Keith Aucoin below the goal line. He circled out to the left face-off circle and fired a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Tim Thomas.
The one-goal lead is the fourth the Caps have had in this series during the run of play. Each of the previous three times, the Bruins have come back to tie the score.
Boston still has the edge in shots on goal, 32-18, and will look to rally to take a 3-1 series lead.

Marcus Johanssson scored just 1:22 into the first period, but Rich Peverley equalized as the Capitals and Boston Bruins are tied, 1-1 at the first intermission of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Johnasson's goal came about due to some sloppy Bruins defense. A bad pinch at the right point by Andrew Ference and a giveaway by Zdeno Chara led to a 2-on-1 break with Johansson alongside Brooks Laich. At the last possible second, Laich found Johansson with a cross-ice pass and Johansson's shot found the back of Tim Thomas' net.
The rest of the period, however, belonged to the Bruins, who recorded 14 shots on goal to Washington's 3, and their pressure told with 6:48 to go in the period. An Alex Ovechkin turnover and a bad pinch by Dennis Wideman led to a 3-on-1 rush for Boston, which was converted by Rich Peverley with a shot through the five-hole of Braden Holtby.

The Washington Capitals trail in their Playoff series against the Boston Bruins 2-1, and if they aren't able to get a win on Thursday in Game 4, they could be facing elimination when the series shifts back to Boston for Game 5. They won't have one of their more important players in the lineup as Nicklas Backstrom was suspended for this game, which only makes things tougher. His absence means that Mike Knuble will likely get an opportunity to see extended playing time, and John Erskine might see the ice as well. They aren't facing elimination in this game, but the Capitals' backs are certainly up against the wall.
Here is all the information you need to find the game on Thursday night.
Game Date & Time: Thursday April 19th, 7:30 pm ET.

With Washington Capitals Head Coach Dale Hunter accusing the Boston Bruins of going after center Nicklas Backstrom's head during the playoff series, it was only a matter of time before Bruins head coach Claude Julien was going to vehemently deny those accusations.
Julien said it was "ludicrous" for anyone to suggest the Bruins were head-hunting Backstrom. He said none of the 30 coaches would do that.
— Ted Starkey (@TedStarkey) April 18, 2012
Of course Julien would never admit to doing that intentionally. The Capitals now have to put supreme focus in tying the series at two games each on Thursday so that Saturday's game in Boston doesn't have to be an elimination game.

Late Tuesday night, the official word came down as to the status of Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Bob McKenzie of TSN in Canada got the word.
One game suspension for WSH's Nicklas Backstrom.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) April 18, 2012
The NHL's Department of Player Safety released its now-familiar video explanation from the department's vice president, Brendan Shanahan.
"Even though Backstrom might have felt threatened by [Boston forward Rich] Peverley's stick," Shanahan noted in the video, "the fact is that Peverley is in a defensive stance and it is Backstrom who is approaching him.
"Backstrom's reaction is excessive and reckless."

The Capitals had the day off Tuesday after Monday night's pulse-pounding 4-3 loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. However, the fallout from the contest continued Tuesday afternoon, as Bob McKenzie of TSN in Canada reports.
WSH has been told by NHLthere will be disciplinary hearing for Nick Backstrom's x-check match penalty, probably tomorrow.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) April 17, 2012
McKenzie doesn't specify whether the hearing will be in person or on the phone. The former option opens up the possibility of a suspension of more than five games. But even if the hearing is over the phone, Washington still faces the possibility of losing their first-line center for a crucial playoff game.
Meanwhile, Dale Hunter had his own complaints about hits to the head.
#Caps Hunter on if he thinks the #Bruins are targeting Backstrom's head "Oh yeah"
— Sky Kerstein (@SkyKerstein) April 17, 2012
#Caps Hunter says Backstrom "He's protecting his head, he just came off of 40 games. You have to protect your head."
— Sky Kerstein (@SkyKerstein) April 17, 2012
So, to review, we have both coaches complaining to the media about hits to the head. We have players calling each other crybabies, and we have the same players apologizing for innocuous-looking elbows.

The Washington Capitals led for a pretty large portion of Game 3 against the Bruins on Tuesday, but a late goal by Boston earned them a 4-3 loss and a 2-1 series deficit. They'll play one more game in Washington before heading back up north to Boston for Game 5. Our Capitals blog Japers' Rink has some thoughts on the game.
If you were willing to describe the first two games the Caps and Bruins played as coin flips, then this one wasn’t much different. But it was the Bruins who were a touch more opportunistic, taking advantage of defensive zone breakdowns, amping up the physicality, and running up four goals en route to a 4-3 win and a 2-1 series advantage. It’s a loss the Caps will lament if they don’t pull this series out, having been up 2-1 halfway through the game before getting sloppy and allowing the Bruins to regain their stride.
The Capitals can even things up at two before heading back up to Boston, which could make Game 5 very interesting. If they fail to win Game 4, then it could be the last game they play in Washington this season.

The Boston Bruins re-took home-ice advantage on Monday night with a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals in Game 3 at Verizon Center. It was another back-and-forth game in this hard-fought evenly matched series. The Bruins took the lead early in the third period, and after the Caps evened it up, a late Zdeno Chara goal would prove to be the difference.
The Bruins took their first lead of the game just a minute into the third period. Brian Rolston put Boston ahead 3-2, slamming one home in front of Braden Holtby. The Caps netminder mishandled a shot with his glove, which led to a scramble in front and Boston keeping it alive in the zone. Rolston would jump on a rebound in front and dunk it home for the lead. Video of Rolston's goal below:
But Washington responded when Brooks Laich evened it up for the Caps with six minutes remaining, breaking free in the zone for his first goal of the playoffs. Washington caught the Boston defense napping, as Nicklas Backstrom fired one up the boards to Laich, who was camped out at the blue line. Laich got behind everyone, with Chara caught standing. With a free lane to the front of the net, Laich put a pretty move on Tim Thomas and went with a forehand to flip the puck into the back of the net. Thomas was visibly upset with the defensive breakdown, rifling the puck to the corner. Video of the goal below:
With four-on-four hockey, the Bruins went ahead again with a Zdeno Chara one-timer from the point deflecting off the stick of Roman Hamrlik in front. The special teams situation was set up after a scrum in front of Holtby, with Milan Lucic and Matt Hendricks sent to the box for roughing. The four-on-four play had been dangerous for Washington all night, and Chara had a nice lane to rip the hardest shot in hockey from the right side. Dennis Seidenberg set up in front and occupied Hamrlik, creating traffic. Video of the goal below:
Over the final minute and a half, the Caps would put some pressure on the Bruins' netminder but Boston would run out the final two minutes to clinch the win. The Caps will now have an extra day off, before Game 4 on Thursday night in Chinatown.

Daniel Paille's rebound goal has propelled the Boston Bruins into a 2-2 tie with the Washington Capitals after two periods in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Paille was left all alone in front of Braden Holtby's net and pounced on a rebound of Greg Zanon's shot from the left point to tie the game.
After trailing, 1-0 at the first intermission, Boston tied the score at 1-1 35 seconds into the second period when Rich Peverley skated down the left side of the ice and flipped a wrist shot that went off Braden Holtby's glove and rolled behind the goal line.
All of 13 seconds later, Alex Ovechkin put the Caps back in front. As Brooks Laich's dump-in attempt flipped into the Bruins zone, Ovechkin raced and beat Dennis Seidenberg to the bouncing puck and one-timed it under the glove of Tim Thomas.

Alexander Semin's power play goal has put the Washington Capitals up 1-0 at the first intermission of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Verizon Center.
Semin's goal came with exactly four minutes to play in the period while Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was serving a two-minute roughing penalty. The Bruins were unable to clear the loose puck by their own defensive blue line and Semin eventually collected, turned, and shot from inside the center point. With the help of Brooks Laich's tremendous screen in front, the puck slipped through Thomas' legs and into the net.
The Bruins outshot the Capitals 8-7 in the first 40 minutes and were helped by a late power play, but Braden Holtby continued his solid play in net, most notably making a glove save to deny Milan Lucic on a 2-on-1 break.

The Washington Capitals have evened their 2012 Eastern Conference opening round playoff series with the Boston Bruins at one game apiece after a 2-1 double overtime win Saturday at TD Garden.
Nicklas Backstrom scored at 2:56 of the second overtime on an assist from Marcus Johansson.
Braden Holtby was tremendous in goal for the Capitals. The Washington youngster stopped 43 of the 44 shots faced in Game 2, giving him 72 saves on 74 shots in the series.
Much maligned Alexander Semin played terrific defensively for the Capitals, particularly in the overtime periods. Fellow Russian Alexander Ovechkin shook off a pedestrian Game 1 to contribute offensively (three shots on goal, one blocked shot) and defensively (five hits) in Game 2.
The Bruins and Capitals will meet again on Monday in Game 3, when the series shifts to the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

The Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins are headed to overtime for the second game in a row, tied 1-1 after three periods in Game 2 of their opening round 2012 Eastern Conference playoff series with the Boston Bruins.
After Washington entered the period leading 1-0, Boston evened the score at the 12:13 mark of the third period, as Benoit Pouliot scored on Caps netminder Braden Holtby as Holtby left the crease to poke check the puck away. It was only the second goal Holtby has allowed on 59 shots in the series.
Alexander Ovechkin has rebounded from a tough Game 1, and though the Russian has yet to score in Game 2 he has displayed an excellent balance of aggressiveness offensively and defensively, taking three shots, having one shot blocked and delivering four hits through 60 minutes of regulation play.

It took until late in the second period of Game 2 of their first round 2012 Eastern Conference playoff series, but the Washington Capitals finally have their first goal of the playoffs.
Troy Brouwer crashed the net and was able to chip a puck past Boston netminder Tim Thomas with just over two minutes left in the second period, given Washington a 1-0 lead entering the third period of Game 2.
Braden Holtby has again been tremendous between the pipes for Washington, stopping all 22 Boston shots faced in Game 2. The Capitals goal was the first surrendered by Thomas in the series.

The Washington Capitals showed no ill effects from their 1-0 overtime loss in Game 1 of their first round playoff series with the Boston Bruins, coming out aggressive in Game 2 and managing multiple scoring chances though no goals in the game's first twenty minutes.
The two teams were chippy again, tussling early and often. Zdeno Charra provided Washington with their first scoring chance less than two minutes into the game, getting sent to the penalty box for hooking Alexander Ovechkin. The Caps mustered five shots on goal but did not score on the power play. Washington also failed to score on the power playe 11 minutes later after a Chris Kelly hooking call.
Mike Green returned the favor midway through the period, giving Boston the man advantage. Washington held Boston scoreles, and the Capitals are now five for five on penalty kills in the series.
Braden Holtby continued his stellar work in net for Washington, stopping all 10 shots faced in the first period. Of course, Boston goaltender Tim Thomas has been equally as good in the series, turning away all 26 Washington shots faced in Games 1 and 2.

The Washington Capitals lost the first game of their first round Playoff series to the Boston Bruins on Thursday night, but it wasn't without a silver lining. The Caps hung with the defending Stanley Cup champions for 60 minutes before conceding the first goal of the game in overtime. Our Caps blog Japers' Rink saw enough to give them some hope for the rest of the series.
It's a series in which many have already written off the Caps, conceding the series to the Bruins before the puck has even dropped - and perhaps they'll end up being right. But if the Caps can get a few more performances from Braden Holtby like the one he rolled out at TD Bank Garden - even in a losing effort - they may just have a fighting chance.
It is a disappointing result to be certain, but the Capitals defense stepped up and stopped one of the most explosive teams for all of regulation. They were one good bounce away from winning this game themselves. If they can steal Game 2 in Boston on Saturday, it's a brand new series.

The Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins went into overtime after three scoreless periods, dominated by solid goaltending and defense. But it only took 1:18 in the extra session to resolve this one, as Chris Kelly beat Braden Holtby on a slap shot from the left wing.
It started off a pad save on the other end by Tim Thomas on a Marcus Johansson shot, setting up a transition break the over way. After a quick clear, Benoit Pouliot controlled the puck at center ice and passed it off to Kelly, who was streaking down the left side. Kelly then put a slap shot past Holtby's left shoulder that found the corner of the net. Video of the shot below:
An animated gif of the rocket:
Despite the overtime loss, Holtby had an impressive debut, stopping the first 29 shots the Bruins sent at him. It was a tough loss, but the Caps immediately jumped on the ice and met Holtby as he skated to the bench, keeping his chin up after the solid effort. They will now look to even the series in Boston on Saturday afternoon.

The Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals are still scoreless after three periods at TD Garden, heading to a sudden death overtime in Game 1. Unlike the first two periods, however, it was Washington that controlled the play, giving Braden Holtby a breather and creating some offense on the other end. They out-shot Boston 9-3 in the third.
After being out-shot by 19 through the first two periods, the Capitals turned up the pressure on Tim Thomas and had a number of good chances in the first ten minutes of the third period, while the Bruins failed to put a shot on Holtby. Matthieu Perreault's line had a couple good shifts, creating solid scoring chances. Nicklas Backstrom knocked down a clear attempt at the blue line and took it the other way with Jason Chimera on his left, but Thomas stuffed the solid chance. It was certainly an improvement for Dale Hunter's club against the stout Bruins' defense.
But nothing would get past Thomas, so we're headed to overtime. It was the first time Capitals have ever played 60 minutes of scoreless hockey in the franchise's playoff history.

After two periods at TD Garden, the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins are still locked in a scoreless draw. The Caps have been badly out-shot by the B's, but Braden Holtby has been impressive in his 2012 playoff debut. He's stopped all 26 shots so far, while Washington has only managed to put seven shots on Tim Thomas.
Along with Holtby, the Caps penalty kill has saved them through the first 40 minutes, killing off three separate power plays during the second period. Washington wiped out two and a half minutes of a remaining high-sticking penalty at the start of the period. They also killed off a delay-of-game penalty on Troy Brouwer shortly after that. Holtby was then whistled for a rare roughing call, as he went high with his stick on a hard-charging Chris Kelly which sent Marcus Johansson to the box to serve his time and gave Boston a four-on-three advantage.
The hard hitting and rough play continued in the second period. John Carlson and David Krecji had a go but the action was highlighted by a big collision between Alex Ovechkin and Dennis Seidenberg. Ovie just got the better of it, an animated gif below:

In a chippy first period to start their 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Washington Capitals played the Boston Bruins to a scoreless draw. The Caps hung back over the first ten minutes, feeling out the Bruins before amping up the pressure during the second half of the opening period. Getting the call with Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth injured, Braden Holtby had an impressive start to the playoffs, stopping all nine shots the Bruins sent his way.
It was a rough start to the game, with both teams chippy right from opening draw. Early in the first, Milan Lucic put a cheap shot on Jason Chimera which sent him to the ice after the whistle. In a clear sign that playoff hockey had arrived, both teams had to be separated after the whistle on multiple occasions. The first period ended with a four-minute high-sticking penalty on Jay Beagle, who drew blood on David Krejci out of a face-off at center ice. The Bruins will start the second period with 2:28 remaining on the power play.
Krecji was whistled earlier in the period for boarding Washington's Dennis Wideman, but the Caps were unable to capitalize on the man-advantage. An animated gif of the penalty below -- irony is having your head rammed into an Advil sign:

The Washington Capitals announced on Tuesday that they have recalled center Mattias Sjogren of Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League. The Capitals loaned Sjogren to Farjestad on Nov. 30 where he played 28 games and recorded nine points. In 19 games with the Hershey Bears this season, Sjogren tallied five points.
It's interesting that the Capitals would recall Sjogren as Capitals general manager George McPhee accused Sjogren of quitting on the team back in November.
When we signed him we told him we had a job available and promised him we'd give him a look this year. His training camp wasn't good enough to keep him at the start of the year. He was developing OK, but I guess they got impatient and decided to go home. If you're going to quit on us you might as well go
The Capitals plan to use Sjogren right now as an extra body for practice. Sjogren will most likely not see any ice time during the Stanley Cup Playoffs unless injuries force the issue.

As the first round series with the Boston Bruins approaches, the biggest question for the Capitals is the status of goaltender Michal Neuvirth. His lower body injury will most likely keep him out of game one of the series, but in an tweet by Washington Post Capitals beat writer Katie Carrera, Neuvirth says that he thinks he should be able to go at some point in the first round.
Asked if he might be ready in the first round, Neuvirth said "I think so." Said he didn't feel good enough today, though. #Caps

While he missed practice Tuesday, he makes it clear that he has full intention of playing in the series, but also acknowledged that he will probably have to play through some pain.
Neuvirth: "You’ve got to go through the pain sometimes and that’s what I’m trying to do." #Caps

Game one of the series against Boston will most likely be started by goaltender Braden Holtby. Dany Sabourin will be his backup with goaltender Tomas Vokoun out with an injury as well.

The Washington Capitals recalled goaltender Dany Sabourin from Hersey, PA, on Monday. Vice president and general manager George McPhee revealed the news on the team's official web site.
Sabourin is a 31-year old journeyman, with stops in Calgary, Pittsburgh and Vancouver during his career. He played 37 games in Hersey this season, with a 2.76 GAA and a .909 save percentage.
The Capitals start their postseason series against Boston on Thursday, and are dealing with a pair of injured goalies atop their depth chart. Both Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth have injury issues, a groin and a leg injury, respectively. Neither were at practice on Monday, according to the Washington Post.
Braden Holtby, who made seven appearances this season, would be to goalie with Vokoun and Neuvirth sidelined. Sabourin would be his backup netminder.
