Bryce Harper Injury Dubbed A 'Medium Sprain' Of Ankle, Could Miss Season Opener

The good news for the Washington Nationals is that Bryce Harper's injury does not appear to be serious. That said, there still is a chance that he could miss his season opener for Class A Hagerstown, according to CSN Washington's Mark Zuckerman.

Harper suffered what general manager Mike Rizzo called a "medium sprain" of his left ankle during a minor-league Spring Training game on Monday. Rizzo likened the injury to one Corey Brown suffered on March 1, but did not commit to a timetable for Harper's return. Brown has yet to appear in a game since, even after being sent to Minor League camp.

Harper's debut with Hagerstown is scheduled for April 7, which is two and a half weeks away. His home debut with the Minor League club is on April 15. While it's too early to determine a timetable, it appears that there is a pretty good chance he will not be healthy by the start of the season.

Bryce Harper Injury: X-Ray Reveals No Significant Damage To Ankle

When Bryce Harper went down with a sprained ankle yesterday and the entirety of the Nationals fanbase felt a shiver go down their spine. But according to Adam Kilgore at the Washington Post, X-Rays have revealed that the injury he suffered is not serious, and nothing to worry about in the long run.

Results came back negative from X-rays taken of top prospect Bryce Harper’s sprained left ankle, according
to a Nationals source. The Nationals listed Harper as “day-to-day” after he had to be carted off the field during a Nationals minor league intrasquad game. The results of the X-rays confirmed their training staff’s initial belief that he had not suffered any significant damage to his ankle.

Well isn't that a relief. Based on how careful the Nationals have been with Harper this Spring, I can't imagine they will be in any rush to let him return to the lineup. Even thought injury is not serious (and that is what you should be taking away from this) I would expect Harper to see some serious time off over the next week or so.

Bryce Harper Injures Ankle In Nationals Minor League Intrasquad Game

Bryce Harper was the talk of Nationals spring training before being sent down to the minor leagues, but now, the news with Harper is not good. Harper injured his ankle during a Minor League Intrasquad game on Monday, and the team is saying he is day-to-day.

Harper was carted off the field with the injury, according to a number of tweets by The Nats Blog. He has yet to receive an X-ray, which explains why he is day-to-day. According to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post, Harper also left Saturday's game early, though it was not because of an ankle injury.

It remains unclear how exactly Harper suffered the injury, but there appears to be a chance it is serious, given that he was carted off the field. Harper was scheduled to begin the season in Class-A Hagerstown, and there was an outside chance he would make it to the Major League by the end of the season.
