Jason Marquis Traded To Diamondbacks, Nationals Reportedly Receive SS Zach Walters In Return

Zach Walters, a 21-year old shorstop currently playing in Single-A, is the man the Washington Nationals have acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in return for Jason Marquis, according to a report by ESPN contributor and former Nationals general manager Jim Bowden.

It is confirmed that Jason Marquis has been traded from the Washington Nationals to the Arizona Diamondbacks.for Zach Walters SS #TRADES

Walters is a former ninth-round pick capable of playing second base, shortstop and third base. The 21-year old is currently hitting .307 in Single-A, with a .377 on-base percentage and a .485 slugging percentage.

Jason Marquis Traded To Arizona Diamondbacks, According To Report

The Washington Nationals continue to be active around the MLB trade deadline, making a move that indicates they have probably given up chasing for the NL Wild Card. The team has traded starting pitcher Jason Marquis to the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to a report by Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. It is not immediately clear who the Nationals will receive in return.

Marquis has been one of the Nationals' most reliable starters this season, going 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA. But the Nationals were looking to sell high on the 32-year old's season, given their place in the NL right now and their need to keep building for the future. Marquis was on the second year of a three-year deal, and was unlikely to replicate his production going forward.

Marquis was scheduled to start on Saturday night against the Mets. Instead, Yunesky Maya will be called up from AAA-Syracuse to make the start.
