Nationals Matt Purke To Join AFL Squad While Anthony Rendon Remains In Instructional League

The Washington Nationals season might have ended, but the Arizona Fall League is just firing up and the Scottsdale Scorpions roster has quite a few hot Nationals prospects on it to watch. The Scorpions will begin their defense of the AFL title Tuesday night against the Surprise Saguaros at 9:35 P.M. EST, but they will be doing it without the Nationals 2011 First Year Players Draft top pick, third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Rendon, once listed on the list of Nationals prospects that would be taking part in the AFL, will now stay behind in Viera, FL and continue in the instructional league while the Nationals send their 2011 third round pick left-hander Matt Purke at the conclusion of the instructional league. It is unknown at this time what the Nats plans are for the Rendon.

Rendon is said to have the best bat coming from the 2011 Draft and at one point it was said he was close to MLB ready. One has to wonder if the Nationals have just reevaluated or have seen something they don't like and would like to season their prospect a little more.

Other Nationals prospects on the Scorpions include Bryce Harper, Derek Norris, Sammy Solis, Patrick Lehman, Zach Walters and Rafael Martin. This will be Harper's second stint in the AFL and the first time he will journey through the League for a full season as last season he was put on the taxi squad.

Anthony Rendon Joins Bryce Harper In Arizona Fall League

Another big name has been added to the group of young Washington Nationals prospects that will be working on their game in the 2011 Arizona Fall League this Fall. That name is third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Anthony Rendon will also go to the Fall League. #natsless than a minute ago via UberSocial for BlackBerry Favorite Retweet Reply

Rendon was selected sixth overall in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft by the Nats and was considered one of the best, if not the best, bat in the Draft. A born slugger, the Rice University Owls infielder hit .394, 26 home runs, 85 runs batted in starting in every one of the Owls' 63 games in 2010.

Both him and other Nationals offensive phenom Bryce Harper will be joining the Scottsdale Scorpions. Those two will be a powerful, dangerous, but highly entertaining duo to watch work in a baseball line-up.

Bryce Harper And Four Other Nationals Prospects Headed To 2011 Arizona Fall League

The Washington Nationals announced Tuesday afternoon the prospects they will be sending to the 2011 Arizona Fall League. They will be sending five of their prospects to the league and among them is their top offensive prospect Bryce Harper. Joining him will be RHP Pat Lehman, RHP Rafael Martin, LHP Sammy Solis, and catcher Derek Norris.

It will be Harper, Solis and Norris' second go around in the AFL and Harper's first full season in the desert. In 2010 Harper played on the taxi squad of the Scottsdale Scorpions and was only available two games a week. The Scorpions won the AFL championship last season and Harper, Solis and Norris all received rings during an informal ceremony just before batting practice during a Spring Training minor camp session this past March.

More baseball for a budding, young offensive phenom is never a bad thing. Considering Harper skipped Single-A Potomac and that he will be missing the rest of the season the minor league regular season with Double-A Harrisburg due to a hamstring injury, it will be nice to get him hot and going again.
