The Nationals are 10-8 against the Phillies in 2011. The four-game series featured many young faces in the Nationals future making valuable contributions, both with glove and bat.
The Philadelphia Phillies are at 98 wins and two games from having a 100-game winning season. If they thought they'd easily reach that goal off the Washington Nationals dime, they learned a valuable lesson Thursday. After a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park the Phillies are still looking for those two wins. The Nationals swept all four games against the Phillies, ending with Thursday's game and a score of 6-1.
Nationals rookie pitcher Brad Peacock went five terrific innings giving up only one hit, no runs and walking two while striking out two. His performance earned him a 0.75 ERA and the second Major League win of his MLB career. It was a heavy hitting performance against a heavy hitting Phillies line up with Peacock looking to get even better.
The Nationals led 2-0 for most of the game before everything fell apart for Philadelphia in the eighth. Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina began the route with a RBI double, his second RBI of the day against Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt. After Ryan Zimmerman walked, Michael Morse stepped to the plate and delivered a three-run home run that put the Nats up 6-0.
The Phillies were able to put a run on the board in the ninth against reliever Todd Coffey, but that was the only run the Nationals would allow.
The Nationals are 10-8 in 2011 against the Phillies and have won the season series between them. Small beans considering the Phillies are still blundering their way into the Playoffs, but what a bright spot of hope for the Nationals future.
The Washington Nationals lead the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 going into the eighth inning of Thursday night's final game of a four-game series between the two teams. Rookie starter Brad Peacock was exceptional in shutting down the Phillies offense while a couple of Nats youngsters did some damage with their bats.
Peacock, in his second Major League start, went five innings giving up only one hit, no runs, two walks and two strike outs. The Nationals certainly look they have something special going with the young right hander. This was the first time Peacock faced the Phillies in his short career and had the element of being an unknown, but it certainly doesn't look like the last time he'll step up to the plate for Washington and help the team.
Shortstop Ian Desmond hit a RBI double in the third inning followed by an outfielder Roger Bernadina RBI single of Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt to record the only scoring of the game.
Many are brushing off the Washington Nationals current good fortunes in Philadelphia. The Nationals have beaten the Phillies in three consecutive games over two days and are coming into Thursday's finale with every intention of making the sweep of the NL East leaders. "The Phillies are just resting their best for the playoffs" or they "aren't playing their "A" line up" (as if beating pitcher Cliff Lee were an easy thing) are common excuses, but a glance at the message boards and social media will tell you the Nats beating the Phillies for three games in Philadelphia is something Phillies fans aren't happy about and a four game sweep might send them over the edge into worry and paranoia.
The Phillies will be sending out one of their best in Roy Oswalt (8-9, 3.66 ERA) to stop the bleeding, but there definitely won't be a lot of brotherly love coming from the Nationals own starter rookie Brad Peacock (1-0, 1.42 ERA). He is dead set on building on top of his spectacular MLB debut as a starter on Sept. 14th when he faced the Mets. He pitched five shutout innings with two hits, three walks and two strikeouts while earning his first MLB win. While it is certainly daunting for a rookie to come into a Major League game to face a line up of the Phillies' caliber, Peacock and the Phillies have never faced each other before so Peacock comes into Citizens Bank Park as a wild card and unknown which could work in his favor.
Not working with Peacock Thursday is outfielder Jayson Werth who will be sitting out due to a right elbow bruise he sustained on Tuesday night's doubleheader. The Nationals are hoping he will return this coming weekend. Also getting the night off are catcher Wilson Ramos and rookie first baseman Chris Marrero. Jesus Flores will be Peacock's battery mate and Laynce Nix will take over first base.
