After trailing 2-1 after four innings, the Nationals powered ahead to a 3-2 lead after a Danny Espinosa double knocked in two runs. The Sox fought back in the bottom half, manufacturing a run on a groundout to tie the game. Although Bryce Harper did not start the game due to concerns over his back, he made a pinch hitting appearance in the top of the ninth, where he walked. It would prove to be a big at-bat, as he would score the winning run on Bernadina's double.
Nationals starter Jordan Zimmerman went seven innings, allowing seven hits on three runs while striking out seven. Tom Gorzelanny picked up the win in relief while Tyler Clippard held on for his eighth save of the season.
