Bryce Harper played hero on two occasions for the Washington Nationals on Thursday night, but the Nats' pitching couldn't hold up. The Colorado Rockies shellacked Edwin Jackson for eight earned runs, but the Nationals came back to force extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Marco Scutaro drove in Jonathan Herrera, winning the game 11-10 for his team.
In the top of the 5th inning, with the Rockies down 9-5, Harper drove in Danny Espinosa with an RBI single, starting a four-run rally that tied the game at 9-9. The Rockies took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning, with pitcher Josh Roenicke scoring on a no-out, bases loaded double play on which the Nats had no play at the plate.
Neither team scored again until the top of the 9th, when Harper rescued the Nationals with a solo home run to make it 10-10. The Rockies got a runner in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the 9th, but the Nationals turned their seventh double play in the last two games to force extra innings.
The bottom of the Rockies' order got the job done in the 11th, with Herrera getting on with a double, which was followed by a pinch-hit walk by Jason Giambi. Rick Ankiel made a great catch on a long fly ball by Dexter Fowler, but Hererra was able to tag up to third. Scutaro was next up and drove in Herrera, winning the game and splitting the series for the Rockies.

If the Washington Nationals are going to win this game, its going to be a stiff challenge. Pitcher Edwin Jackson has given up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a three-run home run by Colorado Rockies right fielder Tyler Colvin.
After the Nationals went in order in the top of the first inning, Jackson pitched against 10 batters in the bottom of the first, allowing hits to the first three batters he faced. Carlos Gonzales knocked in the first run, scored by Dexter Fowler. Then Chris Nelson hit into a fielders choice which scored Marco Scutaro.
The Nationals have scored 23 runs the last two games against the Rockies so if the bats get hot and Jackson settles down, the Nationals could be right back in this game.

In the 10 games prior to Washington's Wednesday win over the Colorado Rockies, the Nationals scored just 25 runs. The bats have apparently returned for the Nationals though, as they have scored 23 combined runs in their last two games in Colorado.
To make it three wins in a row, the Nationals will look to keep up their hot offense against Josh Outman, who has yet to earn a victory in 2012 despite five starts and appearances in 14 games. In his latest outing, Outman struggled against the Texas Rangers allowing eight hits and five earned runs before leaving the game with two outs in the fifth inning.
Pitching for the Nationals will be Edwin Jackson who is looking for his third win in four starts. In his last start, Jackson allowed four hits and one earned run in over six innings en route to a victory over the Orioles. The performance dropped Jackson's ERA under 3.00 for the first time in 2012.
The first pitch at Coors Field is scheduled to be thrown at 3:10 p.m. ET on Thursday and will be televised on MASN.

The Washington Nationals jumped out to an early lead on the Colorado Rockies and continued to pour on the runs through the game. The Nats ended the third inning with and 8-0 lead over the Rockies. Colorado added a run in the third inning on a Marco Scutaro RBI single to right field, but that was about all the offense the Rockies mounted.
The Nats wound up adding three more runs on the night, pushing their lead to 11-1 and scoring double-digit runs for the second game in a row. Ryan Zimmerman picked up his third RBI of the night with a double to right field to knock in Bryce Harper while Mark DeRosa knocked in an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The Rockies were able to add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and another two runs in the ninth to cut into the lead, but it wasn't nearly enough and the rally was cut short.
While the Washington offense pounded the Rockies pitching staff, the Nats pitching staff did a great job of shutting down the Colorado offense. Jordan Zimmerman gave up eight hits on the night through seven innings of work, picking up his fourth win of the season.

The Washington Nationals poured on the runs in their matchup with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday and continued to do so on Wednesday evening. In the first inning, Ryan Zimmerman knocked in a run to give the Nats an early 1-0 lead. Tyler Moore, starting place of Adam LaRoche, filled his shoes nicely with a two-run home run in the second inning to push the lead to 3-0.
The Nationals picked up another pair of home runs in the third inning, one from Zimmerman and one from Ian Desmond to push the Nats lead to 6-0 over the Rockies. Edwar Cabrera gave up five hits in 2.1 innings of work and was quickly relieved.

There are a few things in the lineup on Wednesday evening that stand out, including the Nats deciding to give Adam LaRoche a night off after hitting two home runs on Tuesday night. In LaRoche's place, Tyler Moore will get the start at first base.
The team will also have Mark DeRosa making his first start since April 27th, as the veteran will get the start in left field.

Jordan Zimmermann is no doubt hoping that his teammates can repeat their offensive performance from Tuesday's win over the Colorado Rockies. The Washington Nationals right-hander owns a 2-6 record, despite a 2.89 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP, but his team is providing an average of 3 runs in support per nine innings.
On Tuesday night, Washington reached season highs for hits, 21, and runs in a 12-5 win in Denver. Zimmermann has not recorded a win since May 22, but if Tuesday's results represent an offensive awakening, that could change on Wednesday.
Washington will facean unknown commodity in Colorado starter Edwar Cabrera. Called up from Double-A on Tuesday to replace Alex White, Cabrera is making the first major league start of his career. The rookie left-hander is 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 15 minor league starts this season. Last year, he led the minors with 217 strikeouts.
The game starts at 8:40 p.m. Eastern. Fans can see the game on MASN 2. This is the third game in a four-game series against Colorado.

The Washington Nationals evened their four-game series against the Rockies on Tuesday night with a record-setting offensive explosion at Coors Field. Washington crushed Colorado 12-5 in the series' second game that took a little more than three hours. The Nats set a new franchise record with 11 extra base hits and matched a franchise record with 21 total hits. Washington also set a season-high for runs and homers, handing Gio Gonzalez a big cushion en route to his 10th win of the season.
After some early fireworks, the Nationals blew it open with a five-run fifth inning that pushed the lead to 9-3. Not to be outdone by Stephen Strasburg at the plate, Gonzalez started the rally by singling home Jesus Flores. Ian Desmond continued the offensive assault by doubling home Ryan Zimmerman and Michael Morse. Tyler Moore then put an emphatic bow on the inning, with an absolute bomb of a home run into the left-field bleachers. It was a three-run shot that went deep into the Denver night and landed 20 to 25 rows up in the bleachers.
There were plenty of highlights to choose from in addition to Moore's blast. Zimmerman notched his 1,000 career hit and then later added his fourth homer of the season in the sixth. Adam LaRoche bookended the the 12 Washington runs with two homers of his own -- a solo shot in the second and a two-run rip in the sixth. Desmond was four for five with three of the team's 11 doubles in another impressive performance. And Michael Morse matched Desmond with a four-hit night as well. It was a total team break-out for Davey Johnson's ballclub.

The lead for the Washington Nationals in the NL East is waning following two straight losses and losses in seven of their last 10 games. Their latest loss came via the Colorado Rockies as the Nationals continued to struggle to score runs, crossing home plate only twice on Monday in a 4-2 loss.
During their 10 game slump, the Nationals have averaged just 2.5 runs per game and have not scored more than five runs in any given game. The lack of offense was a large reason why Stephen Strasburg's six game winning streak came to an end and it presents a potential challenge for Gio Gonzalez when he faces Christian Freidrich on Tuesday.
Gonzalez is tied for fourth in the National League with nine wins and won his last start when he beat the Rays with a six inning performance in which he allowed just two earned runs. His opponent, Freidrich, has lost three consecutive starts after winning the three starts prior and has watched his ERA swell from 4.50 to 5.65.
The first pitch is set to be thrown at 8:40 p.m. ET and the game is to be televised on Root Sports-Rocky Mountain and MASN2.

The Nationals returned to the senior circuit on Monday night in Colorado looking to rebound from their series loss to the Orioles. But the offense stalled out against the Rockies, striking out 10 times against the Colorado staff in a 4-2 loss. Rockies' starter Jeff Francis went five innings and gave up just two runs, giving way to his bullpen which shut Washington down to yield a Colorado comeback win.
Ryan Zimmerman opened the scoring with a double to left right that knocked in Jesus Flores. The Nationals catcher would score again in the fifth to put Washington ahead 2-1. This time it was pitcher Stephen Strasburg who doubled home Flores for their second lead of the game. But that would be it for Davey Johnson's lineup.
Strasburg was solid, whiffing eight rockies in six innings of work. But he gave up the one-run lead in his final inning. The sixth started with a Dexter Fowler triple to deep right and Strasburg then drilled Marco Scutaro in the head with a 95-mph fastball. Scutaro was taken out of the game but walked off under his own power. After the delay, Carlos Gonzalez stepped into the box and brought home Fowler with a single to right. Chris Nelson, who was running for Scutaro, would come home for the go-ahead run on a Todd Helton sacrifice fly. That's all the Rockies would need, but Nelson singled home an insurance run one inning later off Tom Gorzelanny.
Gio Gonzalez will try to even the series in Game 2 on Tuesday night against Christian Friedrich.

The Washington Nationals will have third baseman Ryan Zimmerman in the lineup again on Monday night. Zimmerman is dealing with a right shoulder problem. He had a cortisone shot prior to Sunday's game, and the team is hoping it will be enough to stave off a trip to the disabled list.
Zimmerman will bat third in the order for Washington as they open their series against the Colorado Rockies. This is the second series in a 10-game road trip.
Davey's lineup/G71/Mon. at COL: Espinosa 2b, Harper cf, Zimmerman 3b, Morse rf, LaRoche 1b, Desmond ss, Moore lf, Flores c, Strasburg rhp.
