It was anything but an easy getaway day for the Washington Nationals, who finally outlasted the Milwaukee Brewers in an 11th inning marathon, 11-10.
The Nationals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Steve Lombardozzi homered in the top of the first, but by the end of the seventh inning, the Brewers had the lead ballooned to 7-3.
Gio Gonzalez struggled mightily for the Nationals, going just six innings, allowing four runs and walking five batters.
The Nationals fought back, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth to tie the score at 7-7. The Brewers got the lead back at 9-7 going into the ninth inning following a pair of home runs by Norichika Aoki and Carlos Gomez. The Nationals then tied the game at 9-9 in the ninth when Michael Morse hit a two-run dinger.
In the top of the 11th, the Nationals appeared to get control of the game when Morse hit a two-run double. Though the Brewers got a solo home run from Corey Hart in the bottom half of the 11th, it was not enough.

Shortly before their game with the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, the Washington Nationals announced that they have unconditionally released outfielder Xavier Nady.
Nady, 33, was hitting a paltry .157 with three home runs and six RBI's in 40 games with the Nats in 2012. Over his 10 year MLB career, he has hit .271 with 100 home runs and 399 RBI's. He has played for seven different teams during his career including the Nationals.
Nady signed with Washington after spring training began in 2012, and after a hot March made the roster. His release is not a surprise, as the Nationals already have a productive outfield while Jayson Werth is just a week or so away from returning off of the disabled list.

Winners of seven of their last eight games, the Washington Nationals (60-40) take the field Sunday against the newest member of the Milwaukee Brewers (45-55) rotation, Mark Rogers.
With the trade of Zack Greinke earlier in the week, the 26 year old Rogers has been slotted into Greinke's rotation slot. Rogers has not pitched since 2010, when he amassed a 1.80 ERA over two starts and four relief appearances.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, and the opposing mound, with be Washington's left ace Gio Gonzlez (13-5, 3.13 ERA). Gonzalez is 7-1 in his last eight road starts, holding opponents to a .186 average. Oddly enough, he has struggled during day games, sporting a 4.22 ERA over nine daytime appearances versus a 2.35 mark at night.

One night after being held scoreless in a 6-0 loss, the Washington Nationals bounced back Saturday night with 11 hits to top the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-1 at Miller Park.
The Nats' four runs all came by way of the long ball: a solo home run from Corey Brown and a two-run blast from Michael Morse in the fourth inning and solo shot from Ryan Zimmerman in the fifth.
That was all starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman needed. The right-hander and Wisconsin native, playing in front of his home state fans, fanned six batters over six innings, to improve to 8-6 on the season. The Washington bullpen would pitch three scoresless innings and closer Tyler Clippard came on to grab his 19th save of the season.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 2:10 p.m. EST. Gio Gonzalez will be on the mound for Washington.

One night after being blanked, Washington Nationals starter Jordan Zimmerman certainly has gotten some run support, as the Nats lead the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 4-1 at Miller Park.
In the fourth, with the game knotted at 0-0, Corey Brown launched a solo home run to left center field. In the next at bat, Adam LaRoche single. Promptly. Michael Morse then hit a two-run homer to give Zimmerman a three-run cushion.
Later, in the fifth inning, Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer.
Jordan Zimmerman, who took the hill Saturday night, has tossed 85 pitches over five innings, striking out five batters to put Washington in position to bounce back from Friday's loss.

Washington's six-game winning streak was snapped Friday night in a 6-0 loss to the struggling Brewers, but the Nationals (59-40) send red-hot Jordan Zimmermann (7-6, 2.31 ERA) to the hill on Saturday against Milwaukee (45-54) looking to begin a new winning streak. The young righthander is 4-0 with a 0.95 ERA in six starts since a loss on June 22.
The Brewers will send veteran lefty Randy Wolf (3-6, 5.46 ERA) to the mound to face Davey Johnson's club. Wolf is 1-0 with a 3.07 ERA in his last three starts, and is 9-5 with a 4.54 ERA in 21 career starts against the Nationals franchise.
Despite Friday night's loss, Washington still leads the National League East by four games over the Atlanta Braves and is tied for the best record in the N.L. with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Washington Nationals struggled to hit on Friday night. Collecting just four singles, the Nats were blanked by the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park in a 6-0 loss, snapping their six-game winning streak that extended for nearly a week.
Washington starting pitcher Ross Detwiler did keep the Nats close early, pitching a scoreless first three innings, but the left-hander would begin to unravel in the fourth inning, giving up a two-run home run to Corey Hart, and then in the fifth, a pair of RBI singles to Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun. He would leave as a result.
No player on Washington had more than one hit.
The Nats took the first game of the series Thursday, 8-2. Game three is slated for Saturday at 7:10 p.m. EST.

The Washington Nationals trail the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 after five innings of play Friday night at Miller Park.
A two-run home run from Corey Hart in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Brewers their two-run advantage. And they didn't stop there. In the fifth, they added four more runs -- two RBI-singles by way of Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun and a two-run from Aramis Ramirez.
Starter Ross Detwiler, who was on the mound for the Nats, was pulled during the fifth, leaving him on track for the loss after giving up four runs on 83 pitches through four and two-third innings. He was replaced by reliever Craig Stammen, who gave up the homer to Ramirez.
Meanwhile, Washington has struggled at the plate with just one hit -- a fourth-inning single from Adam LaRoche.

The Washington Nationals have been red hot as of late, with a season high six game winning streak they have pushed their record to 20 games over .500. The last time this franchise was that far ahead of .500, was in the strike-shortened year of 1994.
In Friday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Nationals will send pitcher Ross Detwiler (5-3, 3.01) to the mound. In his last two starts, Detwiler has allowed only one earned run over 14 innings. Against the Atlanta Braves on July 22, Detwiler went seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, only one earned.
The Milwaukee Brewers will send pitcher Mike Fiers (3-4, 1.96) to the mound. In his last start on July 22 against the Cincinnati Reds, Fiers went six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts.
The game is scheduled for an 8:10 p.m. first pitch from Miller Park. Television coverage will be provided by MASN 2 with radio coverage provided by 106.7 The Fan FM, 1500 WFED AM and 1580 WHFS AM.

Edwin Jackson finally got the run support.
In his last outing, the Washington Nationals starter allowed just one earned over seven innings but was charged with the loss against Atlanta after the Nats' batters were shut out. Thursday night in Milwaukee proved to be much different. The right-hander would pitch seven scoreless innings as Washington would tally a total of nine hits in an 8-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. Jackson in turn improved to 6-6 on the season.
The Nationals' scoring was scattered over nine innings. They tacked on four in the second inning, coming off a solo home run from Adam LaRoche and a three-run triple from Steve Lambardozzi.
They would later produce a three-run fifth, as well as an RBI-single from Michael Morse in the seventh to build a near-insurmountable eight-run advantage.
Washington faces Milwaukee in the second game of the weekend set on Friday at 8:10 p.m. EST.

The Washington Nationals appear on track for a season-best sixth straight win. The Nats have jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Milwaukee Brewers after four innings at Miller Park on Thursday.
Washington punched in all four runs during the top of the second inning, beginning with a solo home run from first baseman Adam LaRoche. A few batters later, Steve Lombardozzi would triple to score three.
Edwin Jackson took the hill for the Nationals, and since, has tossed 60 pitches with three strikeouts and just three hits and no runs allowed. In his last start, on July 21 against the Braves, Jackson lasted seven innings and allowed just one earned run but was charged with the loss in the team's 4-0 defeat. He is on track for the win tonight.

Edwin Jackson will be on the mound for the Nats, and he's coming off a tough outing in which he pitched extremely well, allowing just one earned through seven innings in a loss. The Nationals provided no run support for him in a 4-0 loss to Atlanta, their last defeat. Yovanni Gallardo is on the mound for the Brewers.
