Gio Gonzalez was bidding for what would have been his league-leading 17th win on the year, but that victory will have to come on another night. Gonzalez was average in allowing three runs in six innings on five hits and two walks. The southpaw did strikeout seven.
His counterpart Roy Halladay was superb for Charlie Manuel's club, going seven strong frames and only surrendering two runs. The ex-Toronto Blue Jay scattered seven hits and punched out six.
John Mayberry Jr. had the only extra-base knock for either side, a solo home run off Gonzalez that proved to be the game-winner.
With the loss, Washington has dropped three straight games for the first time since July 19-21.
