It's the end of the Washington Redskins' season, which means the players who played valiantly through nagging injuries can now get them treated. It should come as no surprise, then, that Mike Shanahan announced that several Redskins have or will undergo surgery this week.
Most notably, tight end Chris Cooley had his left knee scoped this morning. The knee bothered Cooley at the end of the season and may explain why he didn't catch as many passes down the stretch as normal. Cooley sent out a Twitter message confirming the news.
Knee scope went great. I'm glad that wont feel like s*** anymore.
Cooley played in all 16 games this year, despite the knee injury and a mild concussion earlier in the year.
Shanahan also announced that the following players will undergo surgery later this week:

The good news for the Washington Redskins on the injury front is that it looks like running back Ryan Torain will be back in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. Torain practiced fully today and Mike Shanahan said he should be "full go," per the AP.
Obviously, this has happened once before. Torain was slated to play in Week 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he tweaked his hamstring in warmups and hasn't played since. You can assume that the Redskins will be especially careful with Torain in warmups this time around.
Meanwhile, Carlos Rogers and LaRon Landry were both limited in practice, and their statuses are up in the air. Landry, who has pledged to play at some point this season, has missed the last three games with an Achilles injury, while Rogers has been out two of the last three games with hamstring issues. If those two don't play, you can expect more playing time for youngsters Macho Harris, Kevin Barnes and Byron Westbrook.

LaRon Landry has not played for the Washington Redskins since a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10. However, he told reporters today that he does expect to return this season, even though the Redskins have virtually no chance at the playoffs.
Via John Keim of the Washington Examiner:
Landry, who has missed the past three games with an Achilles injury, called himself day to day. But when asked if there was a chance he won't return this season he said, "Never."
"I want to finish what I started," he said. "I want to be with my team and battle with those guys."
Landry has been out of action with an achilles injury, and did not participate in practice on Wednesday. However, coach Mike Shanahan has said the plan is for Landry to practice at some point this week.
Landry is also the leading vote-getter among safeties for the Pro Bowl, but he wants to make it very clear that he is not coming back for that reason.
"Not at all," he said. "Just sitting out is killing me enough. My play would speak for itself. If I get to the Pro Bowl, of course it's a goal. But if I get there I get there. Most importantly I want to be with my team.
Pro Bowl or not, the Redskins could certainly use him.

The Washington Redskins' running game may receive a big jolt this week before its game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ryan Torain, who has not seen the field in six weeks, practiced today for the first time without limitations, according to coach Mike Shanahan.
Torain, of course, is notoriously tight-lipped about the status of his injury. However, he did have this to say. Via Mike Jones of TBD:
"I've just got to stay positive, stay working with the team," he said. "I stayed around the team the weeks I was hurt, and just stayed focused and kept my head in the game."
Torain has not seen the field since a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions. He was starting to emerge as a solid running back prior to that injury, having filled in for Clinton Portis. However, injuries have derailed his positive momentum before, both in college and in the pros.
If Torain can play, it will bump James Davis and Keiland Williams down the depth chart, though Williams will likely play in passing situations.

Earlier today, LaRon Landry said that he hopes to return to the team by the end of the season. Apparently, that could happen as soon as this week.
In his weekly press briefing, Mike Shanahan said that Landry may be able to play next week when the Redskins take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedEx Field next Sunday.
"He's going to give it a shot this week. He's out of his boot, and hopefully he can help us out this week," Shanahan said.
Landry had said that he was "looking forward" to getting back and practicing this week. He was having a Pro Bowl season until going down in a Week 10 loss to the Eagles with an achilles injury. Landry also had an embarrassing game against the Eagles, jawing with DeSean Jackson minutes before Jackson zipped by him for a game-opening touchdown. Nevertheless, his return will be a big boon to the Redskins going forward.
Shanahan also said that running back Ryan Torain is supposed to practice on Wednesday "with no limitations." Carlos Rogers, on the other hand, is still up in the air.

Just a few days ago LaRon Landry was in a walking boot, and his return to the Redskins at some point this season seemed grim. Now, he is out of the walking boot, is able run around a little bit, and according to Ryan O'Halloran at CSN Washington, is "confident" that he will return by the end of the year.
“Every day it’s getting better,” he said. “It’s a slow-healing process. I’m just taking it a day at a time and doing what my body is telling me.”
Landry said he’s “looking forward” to practicing when the Redskins begin preparing for Tampa Bay on Wednesday.
Not sure if Landry is planning on playing this Sunday, but that seems like wishful thinking if that is the case. But if he is planning on being at practice this week, that probably means we can count on him playing at some point before the end of the season. He seems like the kind of guy who starts losing sleep if he doesn't hit anybody for a little while.

For all the specifics Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan didn't provide to reporters on Thursday regarding the injuries and status of two of his top defensive backs, cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety LaRon Landry, the coach was pretty straightforward on Friday, according to Ryan O'Halloran of CSN-Washington:
Landry and Rogers out.
There's a little more context to add to that. Shanahan hasn't ruled out Landry returning at some point this season, which is why the Redskins haven't placed him on the injured reserved list. Once the team leader in tackles and having his best season as a pro, Landry suffered an achilles injury in the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 and hasn't played since.
The New York Giants come in to Sunday's game at the New Meadowlands Stadium with the ninth-ranked passing attack in the NFL, averaging 249 yards a game. Meanwhile, if you're a Redskins fan looking for good news, you can find it in the Giants' injury report, as New York will still be missing wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. The Giants could also be without wideout Steve Smith.

Another day, another series of non-updates from Mike Shanahan about the injuries of his players. OK, maybe that's exaggerating a bit, but Shanahan didn't provide too many specifics on the status of the Redskins' many injured players. The most noteworthy thing he said in his press conference today is that LaRon Landry remains a "longshot" to play against the New York Giants with an achilles injury.
Landry suffered the achilles injury during the blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10. He hasn't played since.
Meanwhile, running back Ryan Torain and cornerback Carlos Rogers did not practice today, and Shanahan said he is not sure whether either player will be able to participate in Sunday's game. Rogers played against the Vikings last week, but reaggravated his hamstring, while Torain has been out of action since a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions.

LaRon Landry was having a breakout season all the way up until Week 10, when he was beat by DeSean Jackson on a deep route to kick off a Philadelphia Eagles blowout. After the game, Landry suffered an Achilles injury, and hasn't played since.
In his press conference today, Mike Shanahan didn't exactly sound optimistic that Landry would be able to play in the near future. Via Jason Reid of the Washington Post:
"I can't tell you for sure until he gets out of the boot," Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday at Redskins Park. "When that's gonna be, I'm not really sure.
"We're gonna look at him and evaluate him day-by-day. We'd like him back as soon as we could. But, obviously, they're not gonna take him outta that boot until they feel like the Achilles makes some strides."
Landry remains in a walking boot, and you have to wonder whether he will be shut down for the season with a free agent year coming and the team likely out of playoff contention. CSN Washington beat reporter Ryan O'Halloran apparently raised this possibility in an interview with ESPN 980 earlier Monday. More and more, this looks like the inevitable conclusion.

Clinton Portis' return from a groin injury lasted only a few plays. Eventually, he reaggravated it, and was taken out of the Washington Redskins' 19-16 win over the Tennessee Titans.
So how serious is the injury? In his Monday press conference, coach Mike Shanahan said that Portis is receiving an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Via Rich Campbell of the Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star:
Shanahan: Still waiting on MRI results on Portis.
Other updates on the Redskins that were injured on Sunday:
Shanny said practices will have to be scaled down this week because a lack of bodies.

The Washington Redskins got a huge win against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, winning 19-16. That's the good news. The bad news is that it cost the Redskins dearly in terms of injuries, with many players going down during the game.
We'll get to those specific injuries in a bit, but first, let's discuss the players that did not play in the game. Starters Laron Landry, Ryan Torain, Carlos Rogers and Artis Hicks missed the game. As of right now, it looks like Landry and Torain certainly will not play next week against the Minnesota Vikings.
In his Monday press conference, coach Mike Shanahan said that Landry is "98 percent" unlikely to play next Sunday with an achilles injury. Meanwhile, Torain is also a "longshot," while Rogers' status is still up in the air. Via Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan.
Shanahan says he's 98 percent sure Landry will be out this weekend. Rogers' status is still TBD... Torain's a long-shot to play as of now.
The four players did not even make the trip to Tennessee last weekend.
