We knew the Redskins would at least be interested in a quarterback during the NFL Draft in April, but I'm not sure this is the kind of quarterback everyone had in mind. Hogs Haven has just posted a little exchange they had with one of the SB Nation NFL bloggers who is at the East/West Shrine Game, and you might be surprised to find out which QB the 'Skins are showing interest in.
[Hogs Haven]: I know the Redskins are there. Are we in stealth mode??
[Big Cat Country blogger Alfie Crow]: Saw the Skins talking to Jerrod Johnson, QB from TAMU... who's been awful. Most of the Skins scouts were old guys hobbling around. Kid you not.
Steelers blogger: haha, thats funny. I believe it. There's a reason the skins are miserable and it probably has a lot to do with scouting.
Well thanks a lot for rubbing it in, unnamed Steelers blogger. Don't you think we already knew that? As for Johnson, if you hadn't heard about him in a while, its because he had a pretty terrible 2010 season. Hogs Haven has a little bit more on him.
Johnson, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder in the off-season, began the season as a Heisman Trophy candidate. But he struggled at times with his accuracy and seemed to have less zip on his passes than in previous seasons. He threw nine interceptions in a three-week stretch that led to his demotion. Johnson conceded Monday that coming back from the surgery was "a little bit" harder than he anticipated but he did not regret the decision to have it.
Johnson obviously wouldn't be in consideration for the tenth overall pick in the first round, but he may be an option if the Redskins decide to go in another direction early. In fact, if they take him late on the third day, they could do a lot worse than to bring in a QB with a ton of physical talent. He may never materialize, but not many guys drafted that late do.
