2011 NFL Mock Draft: Cam Newton's Media-Only Workout Questioned

Cam Newton continues to follow his own path as he prepares for the 2011 NFL Draft. The Auburn quarterback is having his own private workout in front of the media only. No scouts, no NFL personnel. Just media. The workout will take place on February 10, and will last for anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, this arrangement has ticked off a number of NFL personnel people. Rob Rang of CBS Sports talked to a number of high-level scouts, and all of them wondered what Newton has to gain in this situation. One put it in these words:

"The Newtons would be best to realize they aren't in college anymore. Regardless of how good he looks for [the media], there isn't going to be a bidding war for him. We're not recruiting him. They could wind up turning more people against them than for them with this [workout]."

That seems hard to believe, but it's still an odd arrangement, one that has been dubbed a "publicity stunt" by a NFL executive quoted in Rang's piece.

Then again, the private workout doesn't preclude other workouts with team personnel. George Whitfield, the quarterbacks coach that set the workout up, said the real purpose is simply to differentiate Newton from Vince Young or JaMarcus Russell. That would seem to indicate that the workout is simply an additional step beyond what normal prospects go through during the pre-draft process. Maybe those scouts are overreacting.
