Tim Hightower Injury Update: Washington Redskins' RB Has Torn ACL, Out For Season

It's now official. Washington Redskins running back Tim Hightower has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the 2011 season, according to coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan announced the news in his Monday press conference, which is streaming live on ESPN 980. Hightower will be placed on injured reserve immediately.

Hightower suffered the injury in the third quarter of the Redskins' 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, when his knee buckled trying to make a cutback. He did not return to the game.

Hightower had been very solid for the Redskins this season, rushing for 321 yards and one touchdown in five games while also doing a good job in blitz pickup. His absence means the Redskins will need to rely on Ryan Torain and Roy Helu to pick it up on the ground game. Hightower was acquired by the Redskins from the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason for defensive lineman Vonnie Holiday and a conditional draft pick.

Tim Hightower Delivered Locker-Room Speech After Suffering ACL Injury

Headshot_medium

Now that we know Tim Hightower suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the Washington Redskins' 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the many Twitter reports that he delivered a locker-room speech to the team after the game carry on extra significance. Nobody outside of that room has reported exactly what Hightower said, but Brian Tinsman of the official Redskins blog got some information from the man himself.

"We play this game for one reason: to win," he related to the media after the game.  "We want to focus. Regardless, we’re still in the hunt. Whether we were 6-0 at this point, or whether we were 1 and whatever, we’re still in the hunt right now. We still have our goal in front of us and we still have the ultimate goal, and that’s what we’re going to keep working to."

Tim Hightower Injury Update: Redskins Fear Running Back Has Torn ACL, According To Report

The Washington Redskins fear early test results will reveal that running back Tim Hightower suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the Redskins' 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers, reports Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. He would miss the rest of the regular season. Sunday night, Chris Russell of ESPN 980 cited "multiple sources" as saying they believed Hightower's injury to be a torn ACL.

Hightower, in his first season with the Redskins, leads the team in carries (84) and yards (321), with one touchdown and no fumbles. In addition, he's caught 10 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. In his absence, Ryan Torain figures to get a majority of the Redskins' carries. His 4.9 yards per carry average leads the team.

Hightower suffered the injury on a carry in the third quarter of Sunday's loss. He accounted for 88 of the Redskins' 92 net rushing yards.

Tim Hightower Injury Update: X-Rays Negative, Redskins' RB Hopeful For Quick Recovery

Tim Hightower's injury in the Washington Redskins' game against the Carolina Panthers initially looked very serious. Hightower's left knee buckled, and he had to be helped off the field. Hightower said he will know the full extent of his injury on Monday when an MRI is taken. Prior to the injury, Hightower was having a strong game, rushing for 88 yards. If he is out for an extended period of time, Ryan Torain and Roy Helu would take on a larger role in the running game.

Redskins Vs. Panthers: Updates On Tim Hightower, London Fletcher, Rex Grossman Injuries

The news just keeps getting worse for Redskin fans after an ugly 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers. In comments after the game, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed injury status for numerous players.

Defensive captain London Fletcher did not finish the game, Tim Hightower left the field on a golf cart, and starter turned backup quarterback Rex Grossman was doubtful with pneumonia. From ESPN980 reporter Chris Russell on Twitter:

Santana broke bone in hand, Fletcher hamstring severity unknown, Hightower they don't know for sure, Rex had pneumonia

What the injuries mean for the Redskins will be determined, but the early results look awful. Once Moss left the game, Redskins quarterback John Beck looked almost exclusively to his tight ends. Moss is the only legit NFL talent on the Redskins receiving group. Fletcher provides leadership and direction for the defense.

Tim Hightower Injury Update: Redskins' Running Back Leaves Game With Knee Injury

The injuries keep piling up for the Washington Redskins in their game against the Carolina Panthers. Running back Tim Hightower fell down clutching his left knee after making a cut back, and had to be helped off the field. Ryan Torain has replaced him for the time being.

Hightower had been struggling with a shoulder injury this season, but he returned to have a strong game in this one before getting hurt. Hightower had already posted 88 rushing yards in this game, reclaiming the starting job he lost when he got hurt. However, two players needed to help Hightower off the field, so the injury appears serious. It happened when his knee buckled while trying to make a cutback run.
