Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman remains hospitalized with pneumonia, coach Mike Shanahan said in a news conference Monday afternoon; CBS Washington has the complete audio. Grossman was unavailable for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, leaving John Beck as the team's only healthy quarterback. Fortunately for Washington, Beck escaped that game unscathed.
"We're gonna keep him in the hospital for the next 48 hours," Shanahan said, because team physician Dr. Tony Casolaro "believed it was in [Grossman's] best interests to keep him in the hospital." Shanahan hopes to have Grossman healthy enough for practice on Wednesday. He did not address the possibility of adding another quarterback to the roster.
Grossman began the 2011 season as the Redskins' starting quarterback, but Shanahan benched him in favor of John Beck after the nine-year veteran threw his fourth interception on Oct. 16 against the Philadelphia Eagles. On the season, Grossman has completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 1132 yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
The team's emergency quarterback against Carolina would have been wide receiver Terrence Austin, says Mike Jones of the Washington Post. In his college career at UCLA, Austin did not attempt a single pass.
During Monday's news conference, Shanahan did not address the possibility of adding another quarterback to the roster.

Earlier Sunday reports were circulating that newly demoted Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman might miss Sunday's game with the Carolina Panthers because he was ill, possibly with the flu. Via Kelli Johnson of Comcast Sportsnet, it appears Grossman is indeed sick, and might actually have pneumonia:
Washington better hope John Beck survives the entire game against Carolina, or they might be pulling fans out of the stands to take snaps without Rex as a backup. Just another Sunday funday in Redskins land, right?
