Redskins Waive Rookie Cornerback Brandyn Thompson, Clearing Space For Philip Buchanon

On Tuesday night, the Redskins waived rookie cornerback Brandyn Thompson, clearing space on the roster for Philip Buchanon who returned after serving a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. News of the waiver was reported by Adam Caplan late Tuesday night.

In the 2011 draft class of twelve picks, Thompson is the first rookie that the Redskins have outright waived. He was taken in the 7th round, 213th overall out of Boise State. The corner saw action in two games this season, notching two solo tackles in the Redskins Week 2 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Thompson told Grant Paulsen that the Redskins informed him that they would like to add him to their practice squad, if he clears waivers.

Buchanon, on a roster exemption, returned to the practice field Tuesday morning after serving the four game suspension, but not before having his shoulder cleared on Monday. It’s expected that he will provide backup support for Josh Wilson and DeAngelo Hall after missing the first quarter of the 2011 season. He has an extra week to work himself back into the regular rotation before the Eagles come to FedEx on October 16th.
