49ers Vs. Redskins: Mike Shanahan Debates 'Rebuilding' With Reporters After Redskins' Loss

The Redskins were hoping to snap a three-game losing streak. Instead, their offense was woeful again as they fell, 19-11, to the San Francisco 49ers. On Monday, Mike Shanahan discussed whether the Redskins are "rebuilding."

Redskins Vs. 49ers: Redskins Defense Refuses To Point Finger At Struggling Offense

The Washington Redskins' defense had every reason to vent about the offense's struggles following the team's 19-11 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. They didn't take the bait, at least not publicly.

49ers Vs. Redskins: Mike Shanahan, Washington Players React To Poor Offensive Performance

LANDOVER, Md – The Redskins’ inept offense plagued them yet again Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers as Washington fell 19-11, handing them their fourth straight defeat and putting them at 3-5 at the halfway mark of the season.

Though the scoreboard says they scored 11 points, the fact is the anemic offense had just three points when the game was still competitive through three and a half quarters.

“We have to get better offense, that’s the obvious” said head coach Mike Shanahan on his team’s four-week struggle to score.

Though the offense put up solid numbers in the final quarter, the vast majority of the stats gained were during garbage time. The true mark of this group’s ineffectiveness was seen after three quarters, as they gained just 187 yards, ten first downs, and three points. At that point, it was clear there was little chance that Washington had enough firepower to make a comeback in a two-score game.

Naturally, the offense’s trigger man, quarterback John Beck, was in the crossfires, as he had a second consecutive poor effort against Sunday against San Francisco. Beck finished the game going 30 for 47 for 254 yards, an interception and a garbage time touchdown pass.

“We obviously didn’t get things going the way we wanted to in the first half and into the third quarter,” the Redskins' QB said. “That’s something we look to improve.”

No kidding.

Although Beck was clearly one of the focal points of the team’s offensive ineptitude, Shanahan said the unit’s failures don’t necessarily fall on one player.

“Everybody looks at the quarterback position saying ‘that’s the guy,’” the Redskins head coach said. “Not saying that John played the perfect game –I’m not trying to go that way – but as a head coach I know that you’ve got to have eleven pieces of the puzzle and if you don’t everybody looks pretty ordinary.”

His players echoed that sentiment.

“It’s going to take all 11 of us [to turn it around],” said tackle Trent Williams, who returned from a high ankle sprain injury. “We’ve been going most of this season not coming together and if we want to turn this thing around, it’s going to take all of us coming together.”

Heading into the season’s second half, it’s clear that the frustration is building from all corners of the offense – from the quarterback, to the lineman, to the receivers and running backs.

The question remains whether or not they have the ability to stop the bleeding.

“I want to put my foot down and I want it to stop,” said Beck. “We have too many good players on this team, we have good character, we have guys that believe.”

“Losing like this shouldn’t happen and I don’t want it to happen any longer.”

49ers Vs. Redskins: John Beck Will Remain Redskins' Starting QB, Mike Shanahan Says

John Beck has now started three games at quarterback for the Washington Redskins. Each game Beck started, the Redskins lost. Regardless of these results, coach Mike Shanahan said he plans to keep Beck as the starter in his post-game press conference, aired on CSN Washington's "Redskins Postgame Live" program.

"Yeah, we're going to stick with John," Shanahan said.

The Redskins play the Miami Dolphins next week. In his latest start, Beck completed 30 of 47 passes for 254 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Some fans and critics have called for the return of quarterback Rex Grossman who started the first five games of the season. Beck does not turn the ball over like Grossman, but he seems incapable of big plays that Grossman could produce.

49ers Vs. Redskins: Roy Helu Breaks Art Monk's Single-Game Redskins Catch Record

If Washington Redskins fans are looking for some good news following a 19-11 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, here it is: running back Roy Helu broke a team record. The Redskins' running back caught 14 passes on Sunday, breaking Art Monk's single-game catch record. For the game, Helu had 14 catches for 105 yards, as well as 10 rushes for 41 yards and a fumble.

All in all, it's hard to say Helu's record-setting performance was that memorable. He caught a lot of passes on checkdowns and didn't do a ton with them. It's right up there with Mark Brunell's 22 straight completions several years back as far as unmemorable records. Nevertheless, it's still a record, and it came in Helu's very first start as a pro.

49ers Vs. Redskins Final Score: Niners Win 19-11, Redskins Fall To 3-5

Losing is becoming a habit for the Washington Redskins. On Sunday, the Redskins lost their fourth straight, 19-11, to the San Francisco 49ers.

For most of the game, the Redskins' offense lacked any punch. Quarterback John Beck led a late touchdown drive featuring a lot of dump offs to running back Roy Helu. Helu ended the game with 14 receptions, breaking a record held by Hall of Famer Art Monk.

Beck connected with Jabar Gaffney for the nine-yard touchdown and then hit rookie wide receiver Leonard Hankerson for the two-point conversion. Facing just an eight point deficit, the Redskins went for the onside kick, but the Niners recovered and ended the game.

The Redskins defense played another effective game, with consistent pressure on San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith. With limited offensive production, the Redskin defense can only do so much.

49ers Vs. Redskins Score Update: Jabar Gaffney Touchdown Cuts Lead To 19-11

The Washington Redskins are in the end zone against the San Francisco 49ers. Sure, it happened late in the game with only 1:10 left, but it's still a touchdown. John Beck marched the Redskins on an 11-play, 72-yard drive that ended with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Beck to Jabar Gaffney. Leonard Hankerson caught the two-point conversion, cutting the 49ers' lead to 19-11.

The Redskins then went for the onside kick and Graham Gano kicke a good one, but Vernon Davis ended up catching it to seal the game. He illegally called for a fair catch, but all that resulted in was a five-yard penalty. The 49ers will soon kneel down and end the game.

49ers Vs. Redskins Score Update: Niners Pad Lead To 16-3 After Third Quarter

In a third quarter that saw little action, San Francisco added to its lead over the Washington Redskins. A 45-yard field goal from David Akers midway through the quarter put the Niners ahea,d 16-3.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith has played a very efficient game, completing almost 70 percent of his throws for more than 140 yards and a touchdown. The run game for the Niners has been effective as well, with Kendall Hunter and Frank Gore both contributing. Through three quarters, the Niners appear headed to a 7-1 record.

The Redskins offense continues to be stuck in neutral. Rookie Roy Helu has played well for Washington despite a second-quarter fumble. He has over 100 yards through the air and the ground.

49ers Vs. Redskins Score Update: Graham Gano Blast Gets Redskins On Board, Trail 13-3 At Halftime

Grasping for good news, the Redskins received some in the final seconds of the first half against the San Francisco 49ers. Kicker Graham Gano booted a 59-yard field goal, setting a new franchise record for longest kick and putting the Redskins on the scoreboard. At halftime, Washington trails the 49ers 13-3.

With an ineffective offense, the Redskins cannot afford to turn the ball over. It showed in the first half against the San Francisco 49ers. Roy Helu fumbled the ball late in the second quarter, and San Francisco scored a touchdown on the next play. Earlier in the half, a John Beck interception led to a Niners field goal.

The Redskins defense has played relatively well, though the offense seems incapable of producing points. The blame can be placed on every unit on the field: receivers dropping passes, the offensive line missing blocks, inconsistent play from the quarterback.

The San Francisco defense deserves credit too. Led by lineback Patrick Willis, who contributed to the Helu fumble with a big hit, has largely made sound tackles and played mistake free. The Redskins lack any offensive explosion, allowing the Niners defense to play tight coverage and swarm the line of scrimmage.

49ers Vs. Redskins Score Update: Roy Helu Fumble Leads To San Francisco Touchdown, 13-0 Lead

The wheels appear to be coming off the Washington Redskins. It looked like they would at least be able to enter halftime of their game against the San Francisco 49ers down by just one score. Instead, running back Roy Helu fumbled deep in their own territory, and the 49ers struck on the very next play with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to Bruce Miller for a 13-0 lead.

The Redskins initially held the 49ers to a David Akers field goal and got the ball down 6-0. However, on their second play, Patrick Willis stripped Helu on a screen pass and the 49ers scooped it up for the fumble recovery. On the touchdown, Rocky McIntosh got caught in the flat and Miller slipped behind him for the easy score.

49ers Vs. Redskins Score Update: David Akers Gives San Francisco 3-0 Lead

The first quarter between the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers saw some big hits, but little offense. Eventually, the 49ers got on the board early in the second quarter with a 52-yard field goal for David Akers.

The highlight for the Redskins was a monster hit by Ryan Kerrigan on Niners quarterback Alex Smith. Kerrigan sent Smith flying on a rollout, Smith impressed by simply holding onto the ball. The lowlight for the Redskins came from the hands of John Beck. He threw an interception at the end of the first quarter, setting San Francisco up with the ball in good field position. San Francisco capitalized on the turnover when David Akers hit a long field goal to take the lead 3-0.

49ers Vs. Redskins: Leonard Hankerson Gets First Career Start At Wide Receiver

The Washington Redskins have apparently reached the point of the season where they begin playing the youngsters. That was fairly clear when fourth-round rookie Roy Helu was named the starter at running back for their game against the San Francisco 49ers. It's become even more clear because third-round rookie Leonard Hankerson will start at wide receiver.

The news is especially surprising because Hankerson fell behind in the wide receiver rotation early in the season with some poor practices. Evidently, he's done enough to build himself back up to this point.

The Redskins will actually be starting three rookies on offense. In addition to Helu and Hankerson, seventh-round pick Maurice Hurt will be starting at left guard.

San Francisco 49ers Injury Report And Inactive List: Ray McDonald Out Vs. Redskins

The San Francisco 49ers' injury report and inactive list for their Week 9 game against the Washington Redskins confirms what most suspected throughout the week. Defensive end Ray McDonald will not play for the 49ers due to a hamstring injury.

The loss of McDonald will cause the 49ers to shuffle around their defensive line. Ricky Jean Francois will move into the starting role at McDonald's left defensive end position, and rookie Demarcus Dobbs is now the backup. Rookie Ian Williams has also been made active and will be the backup nose tackle.

49ers Vs. Redskins: Roy Helu Starting At Running Back Over Ryan Torain

Fantasy football owners looking to see what rookie running back Roy Helu can do in a starting role will finally have a chance to see it happen, as Helu is listed as the Washington Redskins' starting running back for their Week 9 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Helu will get the start over Ryan Torain, who has been starting ever since Tim Hightower tore his ACL in the Redskins' loss to the Carolina Panthers. Helu has been impressive in limited action this year, but coach Mike Shanahan has been reluctant to play him more in part due to his poor pass-blocking skills. In need of a spark, though, it appears Shanahan has finally relented and will give Helu his chance to shine.

Washington Redskins Injury Report And Inactive List: Trent Williams In, Oshiomogho Atogwe Out Vs. 49ers

The Washington Redskins' Week 9 injury report and inactive list for their game against the San Francisco 49ers provides some good news and some bad news. The good news: left tackle Trent Williams is active after missing the last two weeks with a high ankle sprain. The bad news: free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe will not play due to a knee injury.

In addition, running back Tashard Choice, recently acquired on waivers, will sit out with an injury. He was not expected to play this week anyway, so that's not a huge surprise. Fred Davis, meanwhile, is in the lineup as expected.

Here are the Redskins' inactives:

  • FS Oshiomogho Atogwe.
  • WR Santana Moss
  • RB Tashard Choice
  • LB Markus White
  • DL Darrion Scott
  • OL Willie Smith
  • WR Donte' Stallworth

Fred Davis Injury Update: Redskins TE Will Start Against 49ers, According To Report

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis, listed as questionable throughout the week for his team's home tilt against the San Francisco 49ers, will start Sunday, according to a report from the NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora:

Fred Davis, listed as questionable with an ankle injury, will start for Redskins. More injury updates coming throughout GameDay Morning
Nov 06 via webFavoriteRetweetReply

Davis was seen in a walking boot as recently as Monday, and was limited in practice on Friday, but it appears the ankle injury he suffered in the brutal loss to the Buffalo Bills last week will not keep him from starting Sunday afternoon. It's a good thing too, because Redskins quarterback John Beck will need all the help he can get against San Francisco's top-ranked defense.

San Francisco 49ers Injury Report, Week 9: Ray McDonald Doubtful For Sunday's Matchup Against Redskins

The San Francisco 49ers are gunning for their sixth consecutive win on Sunday when they host the Washington Redskins at Candlestick Park. With a win over the reeling Redskins, the 49ers would have their first six-game winning streak in 14 years, as well as a stranglehold on the NFC West division as the 2011 NFL season enters the first weekend in November.

San Francisco will likely be without their standout defensive lineman, Ray McDonald, who missed all of the team's practices this week with a nagging hamstring injury. He is listed as doubtful for Sunday. McDonald has been an integral part of San Francisco's top-ranked rush defense. The 49ers are averaging only 73.4 yards per game on the ground, and have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in their past 29 games, the longest active streak in the NFL.  McDonald has 13 tackles and 3 sacks so far in his fifth NFL season, all with the 49ers.

Here's the rest of the 49ers injury report for Week 9:

Questionable: FB Moran Norris (fibula)

Probable: CB Tramaine Brock (hand), WR Michael Crabtree (foot), CB Chris Culliver (shoulder), WR Braylon Edwards (knee), S Dashon Goldson (knee) and CB Shawntae Spencer (toe).

Fred Davis Injury Update: Washington Redskins' Tight End Listed As Questionable Against 49ers

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis, the team's top threat in the passing game, is listed as questionable for the Redskins' game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Davis is suffering from an ankle injury that he sustained against the Buffalo Bills, and he was limited in practice on Friday.

Coach Mike Shanahan didn't say much about Davis' status, except to say that he was limited. Davis joins Oshiomogho Atogwe, Trent Williams and Phillip Buchanon as questionable for the game.

Davis was spotted in a walking boot on Monday, which is when the possibility of him missing games first was raised. It seemed like his injury had improved earlier in the week, but we'll see on Sunday.

Washington Redskins Injury Report, Week 9: Trent Williams And Oshiomoghu Atogwe Questionable Against 49ers

Friday, the Washington Redskins held safety Oshiomogho Atogwe out of practice for the third straight day due to injuries to his knee and toe, reports Ryan O'Halloran. Atogwe's absence Friday calls into question his ability to play Sunday when Washington hosts the San Francisco 49ers and their high-powered offense. Coach Mike Shanahan said he would list Atogwe as questionable on the team's injury report.

In other key Redskins injuries, left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis practiced in a limited capacity on Friday. The team will also list Williams as questionable, said Shanahan.

Williams, if healthy, could help plug holes in the Redskins' offensive line. Opponents have sacked John Beck 13 times in the last two games, both of which Williams missed.

Davis stands as Washington's leading receiver, with 36 catches for 517 yards on the season. If he cannot play, third-stringer Logan Paulsen would get the start, as backup tight end Chris Cooley is out for the season. Paulsen has two catches for 48 yards in 2011.

Safety Reed Doughy, linebacker London Fletcher, linebacker Rocky McIntosh, Paulsen, and fullback Mike Sellers practiced in full Friday. Cornerback Phillip Buchanon, who has yet to play in 2011, was limited.

49ers Injury Report, Week 9: San Fransisco Will Be Healthy When They Head To Washington

The Washington Redskins will host the San Fransisco 49ers on Sunday and both squads will be relatively healthy squads. We already talked about the Redskins injury report and which players were limited during practice this week.

The San Fransisco 49ers just released their latest injury report, and it continues to feature two of their biggest wide receiver threats. Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwards were limited in practice again on Thursday because of foot and knee injuries respectively.

The only 49er that did not practice was defensive tackle Ray McDonald who is still limited with a hamstring injury.

Cornerback Chris Culliver, safety Dashon Goldson and fullback Moran Norris were all limited in practice again on Thursday. Cornerbacks Tremaine Brock and Shawntae Spencer were both full go in practice despite hand and toe injuries respectively.

Washington Redskins Injury Report, Week 9: Oshiomogho Atogwe Sits, Fred Davis Limited In Thursday's Practice

Due to a knee injury, Washington Redskins safety Oshiomogho Atogwe did not participate in the team's Thursday practice, further casting doubt on his availability for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. This news comes via John Keim of the Washington Examiner, who also notes the team limited tight end Fred Davis during practice due to a sprained ankle.

In addition, left guard Trent Williams, who has missed each of Washington's last two games, "set it back" during Thursday's practice, coach Mike Shanahan told reporters. The Redskins need Williams healthy in order to bolster their offensive line, which has yielded 13 sacks in the two games he's missed, including a franchise-record 10 against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Atogwe has 27 tackles (20 solo) and one interception this season. Davis, meanwhile, ranks No. 1 on the team in catches (36) and yards (517). The season-ending injuries to top wideout Santana Moss and backup tight end Chris Cooley put even more pressure on Davis to be involved in the passing game.

Shanahan declined to say whether he would use Kareem Moore in Atogwe's place if Atogwe is unable to play, according to Rick Maese. Washington must decide by Nov. 16 if it plans to keep Moore on the 53-man roster or place him on injured reserve. A knee injury has sidelined Moore for the entire 2011 season to date.

Trent Williams injury Update: Redskins Tackle Limited

The Washington Redskins hope to have left tackle Trent Williams back from injury this week as they host the San Francisco 49ers. Williams has missed a few weeks dealing with a high ankle sprain, which tends to be a lingering injury especially for big guys. Williams said he felt he was about 70% back. "You can't play unless you're 100 percent. So we'll see how the practice goes during the week and we'll see where he's at," Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said after practice today.

Last week, the Redskins gave up 10 sacks against the Buffalo Bills as John Beck was pummeled. "I'm just hoping that, by the end of the week, Trent has a chance to play," Shanahan said. The Redskins will need to keep whoever is at quarterback upright against a stout 49ers defense. Williams is likely to give it a go at practice much of the week and be re-evaluated at the end of the week.

NFL Injury Report, San Francisco 49ers: Braylon Edwards And Michael Crabtree Limited

The San Francisco 49ers are on a hot streak as they head cross country to play the Washington Redskins. Two key defensive players missed time for the 49ers today in defensive end Justin Smith and Ray McDonald, though Justin Smith's was not due to injury. McDonald was out dealing with a hamstring injury.

Five players were limited during practice: wide receiver Michael Crabtree (foot), cornerback Chris Culliver (shoulder), wide receiver Braylon Edwards (knee), safety Dashon Goldson (knee) and running back Moran Norris (fibula).

Both Edwards and Crabtree have missed time with injuries this season, but the 49ers offense has been able to make due and score enough points to win. Both wide receivers played last week against the Cleveland Browns, but their impacts were minimal. Both are also expected to play again this weekend against the Redskins.

NFL Injury Report, Washington Redskins: Fred Davis Held Out

The Washington Redskins were without two key players at practice today as the Redskins get ready for the San Francisco 49ers. Tight end Fred Davis sprained his ankle against the Buffalo Bills and was held out of practice today. Oshiomogho Atogwe, who's battled injuries all season, also missed practice due to a knee and toe injury.

Left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), linebacker London Fletcher (hamstring), and cornerback Phillip Buchanon (neck/knee) were all limited in practice today.

Trent Williams is obviously the big concern, as quarterback John Beck was sacked ten times last week against the Buffalo Bills. The Redskins will need Williams back against the 49ers defense that is one of the better defenses in the NFL.

Safety Reed Doughty (chest), tight end Logan Paulsen (shoulder), fullback Mike Sellers (back), and linebacker Rocky McIntosh (ankle) all participated in full.

Fred Davis Injury Update: Washington Redskins' Tight End Says Ankle Is Getting Better

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis suffered a sprained ankle in the team's 23-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday. Though he did not leave the game due to the injury, he nonetheless was spotted wearing a walking boot in the locker room after the game.

Monday afternoon, when asked if Davis might miss any games due to the injury, coach Mike Shanahan said "we don't know yet." But the prognosis looks a bit better.

Meeting with the media on Tuesday, Davis said "his ankle is getting better," reports John Keim of the Washington Examiner:

#Redskins TE Fred Davis said his ankle is getting better; didn't think it was a big deal. Wasn't sure if he'd practice. No boot.

That's excellent news for Washington. In his fourth season, Davis has emerged as the team's leading receiver, with 36 catches for 517 yards and two touchdowns. The injury to top wideout Santana Moss only emphasizes Davis' importance to Washington's otherwise anemic passing game.

The Redskins host the San Francisco 49ers (6-1) this Sunday, Nov. 6. We'll update this StoryStream with more information about Davis' availability for that contest as it becomes available.

Tashard Choice Unlikely To Play Vs. San Francisco 49ers Due To Injury

The Redskins picked running back Tashard Choice up off of waivers this week from the hated Dallas Cowboys. They could really use him too because the running game has been pretty bad since Tim Hightower went down with that ACL injury. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he will be bale to suit up against the 49ers this weekend.

New Skins RB Tashard Choice (hamstring) says he won't be available this Sunday vs. 49ers but maybe the following week

So that means that the carries will once again be distributed to Ryan Torain and Roy Helu, a pair that was pretty ineffective against the Buffalo Bills. Choice will now have an extra week to get healthy and acclimated to the offense before being thrown into the fire.
