Our Redskins blog Hogs Haven has been running a mock draft where four of their members take turns selecting players for the various teams. They did the first eight picks yesterday, but we didn't mention that because I'm not sure that many of you are particularly enthralled with whom the Titans are going to pick. But today they posted picks 9-16 which includes the Redskins at ten. They have the Redskins, who are under the control of Ken Meringolo, taking Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller, which was a surprise even to him.
As many of you have read, I have advocated dedicating EVERY possible resource to the rebuilding of our offensive line. With both guns blazing, I have told anyone who would listen that I would be okay with spending both our 1st and 2nd round picks on the offensive line.
Imagine my surprise when I totally went and picked a non-offensive lineman.
Here is his rationale.
If we are going to get serious about the 3-4, then we need to upgrade our linebacking corps. There is no way around that. Von Miller is currently considered the best pass rusher in the draft. That will of course change daily between now and the draft, but with him and Orakpo holding down the OLB spots, I would feel a lot better about our defense. Our blitzing options would increase, as would the thought process opposing offenses would have to engage in prior to each snap.
He also makes sure to mention that the chances that Miller is still on the board at ten are slim, but you can't argue with his, ummm, argument. Miller and Orakpo would probably be the most talented outside linebacker combination in the NFL. But the question is, can the Redskins afford to wait on upgrading other positions of need to completely solidify one? Would help to the offensive line help more than Miller can? What about a defensive lineman? I can't answer that question, and that's why I don't have Bruce Allen's job.
