NFL Free Agency: Andre Carter Released By Redskins

The Redskins already released one player -- offensive lineman Derrick Dockery -- who did not fit in well with coach Mike Shanahan's scheme. Now, they have released another. The team announced that it has also released defensive/end linebacker Andre Carter

Like Dockery, Carter's departure is not a huge surprise. He had one of the best seasons of his career in the team's 4-3 scheme in 2009, posting 11 sacks as a down lineman. But he never fit in with the team's new 3-4 defense, as he was forced to switch to linebacker. He ended up losing his starting job to Lorenzo Alexander.

Carter was owed a $4.075 roster bonus in addition to his 2011 base salary, so it made financial sense to release him. He told Rich Campbell of the Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star that he was happy the team released him now instead of "making me sit and wait."
