Ron Springs, Father Of Former Washington Redskins CB Shawn Springs, Dead At 54

Our condolences go out to former Washington Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs on this day. Springs' father Ron, a onetime Dallas Cowboys running back, has died after spending the last several years in a coma. Ron Springs was 54 and had been in a coma since 2007 after losing oxygen during surgery.

His father's illness tore up Shawn Springs, and he had a lot of difficulty dealing with the coma. Much of that is chronicled in this 2008 Washington Post story by Jason La Canfora. Shawn Springs also offered to retire from football in 2005 to give his father a kidney, but he eventually got one from somebody else.

Given all that Shawn Springs has been through, the news of his father's death has to be a huge blow. Shawn is no longer technically a member of the Redskins family, but I think I speak for Redskins fans everywhere when I say I am incredibly sorry for his loss.
