NFL Cuts: Josh Portis, Da'Rel Scott Among Ex-Maryland Players To Make NFL Rosters

As NFL Cut Day 2011 came and went, three former Maryland Terrapins, perhaps long shots to make rosters when training camp began, ended up members of their respective team's official 53-man roster.

The Seattle Seahawks kept former Terp and California University (Pennsylvania) quarterback Josh Portis, and it appears Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll will look to utilize Portis in various ways, not just as a clipboard-holding emergency QB. Seattle knew Portis played well enough in the preseason they could not sneak him on to their practice squad if he was released.

Just up the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, former Maryland wideout LaQuan Williams made the Ravens roster. Williams, an undrafted free agent like Portis, caught four balls in the preseason for 84 yards, but it was his return skills that  most likely secured his spot on the final roster. The ex-Terp average 35.5 yards on two punt returns and 30.5 yards on two kickoff returns.

Perhaps the most impressive performance by a former Maryland player in training camp was that of Giants running back Da'Rel Scott, a seventh round selection. The speedster had both a 97-yard and 65-yard touchdown in exhibition play, and his explosive running style made it impossible for New York to cut him for fear of losing him to another team.

Adrian Canon Signs With San Diego Chargers, According To Report

The University of Maryland continues to feed players into the NFL through the undrafted free agent signing process. Former Terp wide receiver Adrian Cannon is the latest, and he has signed on with the San Diego Chargers. For more on Cannon, we turn to Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times.

Cannon caught 86 passes for 935 yards and six touchdowns in 45 games at Maryland. He made 23 starts, all but one in his final two seasons. He had 36 receptions for 324 yards as a senior. He joins Travis Baltz (Indianapolis), Adrian Moten (Indianapolis), LaQuan Williams (Baltimore), Alex Wujciak (Cleveland) and Will Yeatman (New England) as former Terrapins inking free agent deals this week.

Cannon probably has a long way to go before he can make the Chargers everyday roster, but he is a competitor and he should at least be able to contribute to the practice squad. For more on the Terps, head over to Testudo Times.

Redskins Sign South Florida Tight End Kevin Gidrey

The Redskins keep adding to the list of their undrafted free agent rookie pool, as they have now apparently signed South Florida tight end Kevin Gidrey.

This according to Rick Maese of the Washington Post, who noted Gidrey's twitter declaration:

Gidrey is an interesting sigining for the team, as they appear to be deep at the tight end position. Chris Cooley and Fred Davis appear to be on the top of the depth chart there, with second year man Logan Paulsen looking to retain his spot. Time will tell if Gidrey winds up competing for the third tight end spot this training camp.

Travis Baltz Signs With Indianapolis Colts, According To Report

Former Maryland football kicker/punter Travis Baltz will get his chance to make an NFL team. Baltz has signed with the Indianapolis Colts, according to his agent. Alelqui Boué made the announcement on his Twitter account just now.

Congrats to client, P/K Travis Baltz, on becoming a member of the Indianapolis Colts todayless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Baltz handled the kicking and punting duties last season after spending most of his time as the team's punter. The Colts have Adam Vinatieri as their kicker, but he is getting up there in years. They also have Michigan State kicker Brett Swenson on the roster. Pat McAfee is their punter.

Josh Portis, Former Maryland Quarterback, Signs With Seattle Seahawks

Josh Portis' Maryland football career was a major disappointment, but it looks like he has landed on his feet. He was not selected in the 2011 NFL Draft, but he has been signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent. His agent, JR Rickert, confirmed the news on his Twitter account.

Congratulations to client Josh Portis who is on his way to Seattle and thanks to @AgentRayB for the assist!less than a minute ago via Facebook Favorite Retweet Reply

It remains unclear what position Portis will play for Seattle at this time, since his skills would make him suited for several different spots.

Portis came to Maryland as a highly-touted quarterback prospect, but never got on the field much. In 2007, he was caught cheating on the exam and was suspended for the season. After one year as a backup, he transferred to Division II California University of Pennsylvania.

LaQuan Williams, Former Maryland WR, Signs With Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens will now have two Maryland football rookie wide receivers in training camp next season. After selecting junior standout Torrey Smith in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, the Ravens have signed one of his teammates, LaQuan Williams, as an undrafted free agent. Williams confirmed the news on his Twitter account.

Williams only caught 33 passes as a wide receiver in his four-year college career, but made a name for himself as a valuable special teams player. If Williams is to make it in the NFL, it will likely be on special teams.

Former Maryland TE Will Yeatman Signs With New England Patriots

Former Maryland football tight end Will Yeatman will have an NFL home, at least for the summer. The Terps' tight end has signed an undrafted free agent contract with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, announcing the news on his Twitter account.

Alright people I guess the word is out. I'm a New England Patriot!less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

Yeatman was a two-sport star at Maryland and Notre Dame, playing for both the football and lacrosse teams. SB Nation Boston has more on this:

Yeatman was a two sport athlete in college, playing tight end for both Notre Dame and Maryland on the football field, and then playing attack and midfield on the lacrosse field in the spring. He was named the LaxPower Rookie of the Year in 2007 for his work on the lacrosse field, leading Notre Dame with 46 points and 25 assists. He sat out the 2008 season in order to transfer to Maryland, a stronger lacrosse program than Notre Dame.

Belichick himself was a football and lacrosse star in college, so signing Yeatman only makes sense.

Adrian Moten Signs With Indianapolis Colts, According To Report

Maryland football linebacker Adrian Moten was disappointed not to be picked in the 2011 NFL Draft, but the undrafted free agent will get a chance to make it in the NFL. Moten has signed with the Indianapolis Colts, making the announcement on his Twitter account.

Moten had 67 tackles, 2.5 sacks and four interceptions as an outside linebacker last season, teaming with middle linebacker Alex Wujciak for one of the top units in the ACC. He joins Wujciak, LaQuan Williams, Will Yeatmen, Travis Baltz and Josh Portis as former Terp undrafted free agent signings.

Undrafted Free Agents: Will Hill Not Linked To Redskins, According To Report

It looked like the Washington Redskins were closing in on signing undrafted free agent safety Will Hill out of Florida for training camp. As of right now, though, that doesn't appear to be the case, according to Chris Russell of ESPN 980.

Follow up on the Will Hill story to the #Redskins -- As of about a half hour ago - neither side had ANY discussions at all about Hill.less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

This contradicts previous reports that the Redskins were linked to Hill. The Redskins have signed offensive tackle Willie Smith of East Carolina, running back Shaun Dragun of North Carolina and quarterback Ben Chappel of Indiana.

Undrafted Free Agents: Former Maryland Linebacker Alex Wujciak Signs With Cleveland Browns

Maryland football linebacker Alex Wujciak is the latest undrafted free agent to agree to terms with a team for training camp. Wujciak has signed with the Cleveland Browns, according to Mike Wilkening of Pro Football Weekly.

Wujciak was the defensive anchor for a very strong Terps defense throughout his college career, and is certainly one of the most accomplished linebackers in Terps history. But he didn't get selected in the 2011 NFL Draft, perhaps because of questions about his size and speed. In Cleveland, though, Wujciak will have an opportunity to impress an NFL team that could always use more help on the defensive side of the ball.

Wujciak is one of several former Maryland players who have signed with NFL teams in the past couple days. For a complete list of Maryland undrafted free agents, visit Testudo Times.

Undrafted Free Agents 2011: Redskins Reportedly Linked To Several Undrafted Free Agents

The Redskins have already reportedly been linked to several undrafted free agents, appearing to have agreed to terms with a number of them.

According to Chris Russell of ESPN980, the team has agreed to terms with offensive tackle Willie Smith out of East Carolina. Smith, a converted defensive lineman, was a two year starter for ECU, earning 1st team All-CUSA honors in 2010.

The Redskins have also come to terms with North Carolina running back Shaun Draughn, who claimed to be joining the team per his twitter account

In addition to Draughn and Smith, the team has been linked to Florida safety Will Hill, as well as Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell.

Undrafted Free Agents Can Be Signed Monday Night, According To Report

The undrafted free agent signing period has apparently already begun, despite provisions in the new collective bargaining agreement mandating that it begin on Tuesday. ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that teams have already begun negotiating with undrafted free agents on Monday night. Via Adam Schefter.

John Clayton reports that NFL teams were granted the right to sign undrafted players Monday night. So dealings are underway.

This comes as a definite surprise, because the new CBA suggested this process would begin Tuesday along with all other rookies. Instead, it has evidently been accelerated.

It remains unclear whether the Washington Redskins will sign many undrafted free agents. One of the problems working against them in this regard is that they selected so many players in the 2011 NFL Draft. With 12 drafted rookies coming in, there aren't many spots left for undrafted free agents.

Undrafted Free Agents Can Be Signed Tuesday, Will Redskins Sign Any?

According to the latest post-lockout timeline, it appears that teams will be allowed to signed undrafted free agents starting tomorrow.

The Redskins saw solid contributions from their undrafted rookies last season, with players such as Keiland Williams, Brandon Banks and Logan Paulsen finding their way into the lineup.

This year, however, may prove to be difficult for the Redskins to see undrafted rookies make contributions for them. The team drafted 12 rookies, their largest draft class in over twenty years. It's not a guarantee that every player in that class will make the 53 man roster. And if they don't, they'll likely land on the practice squad, where there are only eight spots available.

It's bad enough that they have to deal with the stigma of going undrafted, but now they have to deal with an even bigger disadvantage, one they cannot do anything about.  The lockout deprived them of the opportunity to get into the building earlier in the offseason, giving them the chance to learn the system well enough to impress the coaching staff come training camp.

So for the undrafted rookies the Redskins sign, they will only have a few weeks to really flash and prove they belong on an NFL roster.
