2011 NFL Free Agents: Should Redskins Pursue Braylon Edwards?

With the possible departure of unrestricted free agent Santana Moss, the Washington Redskins are in need of a wide receiver who can provide productivity, athleticism and star power, either to replace Moss' value or complement it while starting alongside him. Braylon Edwards is one 2011 NFL free agent that could fit that bill. Should the Redskins go after him?

Pros: Drafted third overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2005, Edward has the size, speed and athleticism to match his first-round pedigree. At 6'3" he would be the Redskins' biggest wide receiver and a legitimate deep threat. Edwards is 28 years old, which, for a receiver, means he is still in the prime of his career.

Cons: Aside from a monster year in 2007, Edwards' production has never matched his athleticism. While capable of making circus catches and burning opposing secondaries on deep routes, the former Michigan standout is also prone to dropping easy balls. He has also had several run-ins with the law, including a drunk driving charge and a possible probation violation in Cleveland.

Verdict: Edwards' checkered past might be just enough baggage to drive his asking price to a reasonable sum. I'd love to see the 'Skins take a flier on him, if for no other reason than to end their embargo on tall wide receivers.
